This was a GREAT show… when this was taped, I was a student at Northeastern University in Chicago, which was right next door to the WTTW studio; they sent a bunch of free admission tickets to the music department, and I wound up going to the session where they recorded Herbie’s group and the Chick & Herbie duet. It was probably my earliest exposure to that style of interactive improvisational music. Thanks so much for posting this!!!

The chick herbie duo piece was awesome because they put ego aside and communicated then did the music with extreme sensitivity to one another achieving unity. It doesn't get better than this. I tip my hat to master herbie and chick, RIP chick corea you are missed but not forgotten.

I didn't realize Stanley wrote Vulcan Worlds, as well as one of my other favorites 'Butterfly Dreams' ... I admire him as a writer as well as a technically superb artist. And then Herbie is in the house with one of my favorites 'Butterfly'. Both Chick and Herbie are geniuses. but Herbie consistently strikes a deeper chord in me. They will both be revered gods of music even 50 years from now. Much thanks for uploading this video.

@@johnunderwood3132 Indeed John. This will be considered 'Classical' decades from now ... if we make it that long as a species. Here is an interesting duo, Domi, the keyboard artist, clearly taking a page from RTF. I read that the drummer, now only about 18, J.D. Beck, seems to be a protogé of someone in Snarky Puppy ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3-zk4Kulrd8hZI. In another video of them playing in an apartment room, I heard her quote the theme from Bill Evans' 1961 'Nardis'. These kids know what they are doing!

Great! How can anyone who loves music NOT get a kick out of these virtuoso musicians. Lenny White is one of the top 3 Jazz drummers all time, Chick a superstar on synth and piano (with an unmistakable sound) as well as prolific composer and band leader for 5 decades. Stanley Clark, Herbie Hancock, Al DiMeola all great players and composers. This is a true superband. The other of course was Weather Report. Over time, I have found that Weather Report's sound is more to my overall taste, maybe because Chick's energy is often frenetic overpowering. Both bands gave terrific live shows and played for as long as 3+ hours.

Return to forever was a force of nature changing jazz permanently. Weather report did the same from a different angle. I was fortunate enough to experience them during thier prime. I tip my hat to both of them. Jazz is America's classical music, max roach was right.

Imagine what it must've been like to hear this live with your own ears. Especially the sequence at 9:47. I'm glad as hell to see bands like Snarky Puppy carry the torch. Honestly. Let's all hope jazz fusion doesn't ever disappear.

snarky puppy is just one of many fusion bands active today. a bunch of great musicians but their compositions are lacking, missing the x-factor that makes them greater than the sum of their parts.

Herbie had his own band called the Headhunter which had a totally different musician lineup. Return to Forever was Chick Corea, Al DiMeola, Stanley Clark and Lenny White as the main members but there were others such as Steve Gadd, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Bill Connors.
