Return to Hammerland: LUST FOR A VAMPIRE (1971)

Ian and AC continue to run over potholes on their Return to Hammerland, and this month's is one of the deepest!
In Jimmy Sangster's 1971 middle chapter of the "Karnstein trilogy", LUST FOR A VAMPIRE, a traveling writer discovers a school for young women hidden near an abandoned castle. He soon comes face to face with a beautiful (and very hungry) vampiress who's using the grounds as a snack bar.
In this spoilerific review, the guys boggle at this ham-handed entry--which makes them appreciate the bookend films (THE VAMPIRE LOVERS and TWINS OF EVIL) even more, and also accentuates some shortcomings that hadn't bothered them as much before (day-walking vampires).

I have to take small issue with the critique of the insertion of the”Strange Love” segment to the soundtrack: It was sappy, syrupy, and ridiculously mawkish-perfect for Lust for a Vampire.

I love the Hammer films but I feel like they had started to run out of steam by this point. There were a few gems left to come but it was mostly downhill from this period on. Amicus were producing much better and memorable films around the same time (in my opinion) . Hope you guys enjoy your next return to Hammerland a lot more.

What a disappointment this review is. So much wrong with it. Firstly, before you pontificate, check your history. Vampires were always content in light until the 20th century when the film Nosferatu was released. It is a modern myth. Secondly check the pronunciation of the name of the main actress before recording it wrongly & disrespectfully . .And how can you pompously state a view when you admit you were distracted throughout, even possibly missing the final half hour. I would like to point out the stunning cinematography, shown up beautifully in the more recent release of the BluRay , the superb British actors universally employed,( there are actually no poor performances) & the light hearted & fun feel to the whole movie; if you like, a Disneyfied take on The Karnstein story. A shameful review in my opinion.

Hi, Judy! 100% understand that this movie has its fans, and happy to hear that you are one of them. Apologies for the apparent mispronunciation of Yutte Stensgaard's name - that is how Bruce G. Hallenbeck says it on the commentary, so I was simply following suit. Hopefully you'll enjoy some of our other appreciations of Hammer fare in the other shows, because we really do love this stuff!
