We finally got back to our remote property in the U.P. of Michigan, and had a great time- putting up our wall tent, enjoying a campfire, amazing breakfast, a great walk in the woods... and then I got a phone call in the middle of the night. A horrible phone call...

I hope you’re doing ok Shannon. I kicked an addiction with the help of a spiritual leader “laying hands” on me. It was a wild experience but so worth it. I took a brand new bottle of pills and flushed them down the toilet and have never looked back. It’s possible! There’s a KZbin channel called Put the Shovel Down that is a great addiction resource.

Brook the hole in your heart will always be there but it gets smaller with time and remembering all the good times you and your brother had growing up chasing each other around the house and getting in trouble for knocking things over and fighting who was going to get to sit by the window in the car on trips. You guys make it more real than any other off-grid homesteading channel. You show what it really takes - a lot of very hard, dirty work. I've built two myself. Living on one now full time. There's issues for sure. My first place was really remote. First thing I built was a shed to store some tools, equipment and supplies so I wouldn't have to haul in each weekend as I continued to build. Had things locked up well and thought I was so remote no one would know I was there. Nope. Someone broke in and stole everything I had. It's tough to have to buy tools, etc... all over again. One weekend I was up there a rain storm came. Ground got so saturated and slick clay soil got my truck stuck up the axil. No one around. Tow trucks won't come because they don't want to get stuck too. Wound up having to leave the truck there. Hoofed it out with some stuff and my dog and had a friend pick me up on the main road after driving 250 miles to the area. A good friend. We went back weeks later, when the ground dried out, to pull my truck out. But dispite the difficulty it's very satisfying to use your own ideas, ingenuity to build your dream and make it work while adjusting to this kind of lifestyle. It is very different than most people realize. For those making comments about Brook doing work. I am a 58 yo woman and I built both my off-grid homesteads 100% by myself. Houses, sheds, solar, septic, sand point with pitcher pump, electric, plumbing, roofing, insulation, kitchen build, interior finish work, clearing the land, you name it. I did it myself. It's taken 3 summers to build the one I'm living in now. Even welded up my own well drilling rig to drill a new well, to run to my pump house that's powered by solar. Drilling that well now. Last I was aware women have hands and a brain, and legs with feet to move them around and climb up and down ladders just like men do.

This is a powerful video. A film maker could create an amazing movie out of just everything you have shared here...there is love, natural beauty, music, a warm fire and beautiful people. Sorry about your loss. My brother also died young for reasons that were hard to accept. After coming home from Vietnam, we didn't realize he was suffering from PTSD. He drove off a cliff and broke his back because he wasn't fully in control of his truck. This didn't kill him immediately but he was never the same and his quality of life was reduced because of alcoholism.Thank you for making this beautiful brave video. It's not the first time I've watched it and it probably won't be the last.

My brother passed suddenly 1 year ago and I didn't get to say goodbye to him. It was so very very hard and still is as both are parents have passed away. I can sympathize with you. Oct 21 started a down hill run for my husband. He was 73 & had a bad heart. 1.5 yr ago had a defibrillator/pacemaker put in. He was 100% dependent upon it. His organs started showing signs of failure not getting floor flow they needed. Nov 5th test "C+" so I was not able to be with him after that. His phone was his only lifeline to family. Meds could not help keep his fluids from filling his arms hands legs & feet. He coded on Dec 16th & they brought him back but on Dec 18th he was bleeding someplace & his organs began shutting down. They did allow 2 of our boys living in state and me to come & say our goodbyes. We spent 6hrs with him & said if he was able we would talk in the morning. Five hrs later they called to say he had passed peacefully to Jesus arms in heaved. He had many loved ones already there to greet him. Best of all he gets to spend eternity with God. We too will join him & many loved ones & friends who have already gone ahead of us. Great joy in our sorrow to have that peace. John 3:16

"They shared the same womb as you." What a beautiful and moving statement. I am the youngest of 8...six girls and two boys. My parents were both amazing people, devoutly Catholic. My beloved father died in 1999 and my dear mother suffered loneliness from his loss until her death in 2012. She was happy with her children, grandchildren and her church but she wasn't complete without him. Then my sister died of an accidental overdose in 2014 and my brother died from a freak, tragic fall from a ladder in 2019. Grief is grief but my siblings' deaths hit a different way than our parents. We used to be a tight family unit but death's blow is hard and relentless. They went on before us but I hang on to your last statement while awaiting our heavenly reunion...no pain, no suffering- just peace and total LOVE.

They do so many things that show kindness and respect and gratitude for each other it warms my heart. If you have ever laid in bed exhausted the morning after setting up camp and woke up to the smell of your loved one making you the best camp breakfast ever and you just keep your eyes closed, slowly waking up thinking about how awesome they are and how thankful and blessed you are to have them.... there is nothing quite like those things to really bond you together. Knowing how much the other person appreciates and enjoys the same makes the work easy and enjoyable. It is sad to me that many have not experienced this give and give with someone who doesn't just take. My Grandma said "put each other first and no one ever has to come second!" And you two do a great job of complimenting each other, working hard to build together. Thank you for giving us a glimpse 🥰 I married the wrong person and missed out on 10 years of life.... seeing you guys gives me a glimmer of hope I could find a man like that! One who still sees a woman if you can work hard and hold your own and aren't put off. You said it, "Now that's a MAN!".😊 And sister wow! What a WOMAN! 💯💪😊🫶

This is the first episode of yours that I have watched. I will watch them all over a period of time. I pray Gods peace for you, after seeing the conclusion. I know there are really no words that will get rid of the pain, but there are so many very wonderful thoughts for you in this blog. This is a part of life we always dread. The only thing I can say is that it does get better, but it takes time. I have not yet lost any siblings but we lost our son in 1995 and I lost my wife in 2016. You have such a beautiful place to go to grieve and be close to God and your brother. Peace.

OMG I just found your channel today June 26th 2022 and i have been watching videos all day long. Can not get enough of your videos. I also watch Living Off Grid With Jake and Nicole. They are awesome as well. But I just adore you and your husband, you have a good husband there. But I am so sorry to hear the news at the end of this video about your brother. I hope in heaven he is healed of all the struggles he suffered here on earth. My brother is 36 and he is struggling with addiction now and has been for many many years. I hate to say it, but I know the outcome if he continues on this path of distruction, I am waiting on the phone call that he has passed due to some situation of drugs no matter if it was an overdoes, injury, etc....it is scary. yes ive lost 2 brothers,one due to a foiled armed robbery and he died in his shop,already in 2003 but still think about him everyday, second one due to being hit on his head at work when a chain block fell down, that was at same time my other brother got shot, in the same week, the brothers work accident happened the wednesday and the friday my brother got shot, ok the other brother only died in 2011 but was a brain aneurysm from the hit on head, his skull was cracked open, so i know what it is too loose 2 brothers, so i know what it is too lose a loved one,

Wow, I felt that! Thank you for being so intimate with us. I was smiling when I heard you genuinely laughing with your hubby and I was crying by the end. I'm very sorry for your heartache and loss. That was such an accurate representation of exactly the way it goes..... You're doing ok, actually, you're a little better than ok. You're grateful and appreciative for how wonderful life is, how beautiful things are, you just settle down and kind of snuggle into the calm love of the person you sincerely enjoy spending time with, and suddenly you have to move really fast towards the polar opposite situation. It can be scary and difficult. It isn't easy navigating through the trauma of how quickly things can change forever. I was just telling my daughter, 26, that when she finds things are calm and ok, be happy, be grateful, stop and hold onto that feeling with both hands. Happiness and being content isn't something to wait for, go find it and live in it, cover yourself in it, like a blanket. I can promise you this, you'll be ok again. In time, after your heart heals, you'll get back to the calm you had that weekend.

@@buffplums I hope you find your way to joy and peace. I believe we are here for a reason and our journey is about finding and fulfilling that reason. I'm probably not the best person to try and encourage you right now because I'm in grief myself. My middle son died last June. He had a genetic condition we didn't know about and once it kicked in he was gone within seconds. No goodbyes. No last kisses. And he left 3 small boys without a father. They were excited about a camping trip their father was taking them on the next morning. Instead we get a knock at the door and a coroner telling us ... I'm sorry to inform you... My son was 39 and he struggled with depression and feelings that his life had no meaning. But, his life meant the world to me. He taught me how to love, how to find joy in simple things and how to live in a world that often doesn't understand disabled people. Whatever his reason for being here was I believe he found it and then he left for his next journey. He lived in pain physically and emotionally all of his life and perhaps that was his journey - to say you can find joy, beauty and peace in whatever your circumstances or situation. That is how he lived the last year or so of his life - in joy and with peace. Life is beautiful, Chris. It's not always fair but it is worth the journey. I am praying for you. I pray for comfort and guidance as you learn about your journey and purpose. I wish you to know that you matter - that you are loved and are capable of loving - that somehow we are all connected and none of us are here by accident - that we are all an important part of humankind and all of us are precious, needed and worthy. Please don't let your sorrow today steal your future tomorrow where your situation/circumstances may be entirely turned around.

I think that addiction is a terrible DISEASE because IT IS. I don't believe that alcoholics or drug users purposely intend it. Its just a real tragedy and especially I have seen the pattern in my life that most people who suffer most, are most fragile and sensitive and kind hearted and never fit in because they are so pure of spirit. It's really not the world they connect with and most say they'd rather Go Back Home on the other side. I understand and feel that way too. Mama Mia has a part 2 now but you have to pay for it or pay for upgraded Netflix which is ridiculous! Making eggs and homemade bread for breakfast as I type this. Thank God for our Blessings and may everyone find comfort in their creator, for those here andon the other side! Bless you. Make us some coleslaw next time with a fish fry and hush puppies old skool way, haha! I love TexMex food and culture, its who I am! I'm am so sry for your loss. Really hits home, my father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and gave 8to9 months to live back in January. Our time was the fall, camping and hunting at our cabin. I'm not sure if he's gonna make one more yr or not. He's my best friend and hunting buddy. And again I'm so sry.

It will be a knock at the door. Police at other city call yours and yours makes the notification. Lost my 28 year old son to an OD, accidental but inevitable without recovery. We tried everything. I talked to him the week before and he hit mt up for a deposit on an apartment. Nope, wasnt doing it. He was getting barbiturates from a dealer on the Web. So he got mad and said there was no reason to talk. I said bullshit there’s always a reason to talk, talk to let me tell you I love you or walk down memory lane. He said Ok. I said I love you, G. He said I love you too Dad. Last conversation. Rest In Peace GJ.

Sorry to hear about your brother. I really enjoy your channel and your husband's. I am using your small cabin video (10x12) for inspiration for making my firewood shed this summer. We love tent camping and making breakfast is always a rewarding process. It cannot be beat. Pourover coffee is a standard. I home roast from green beans and there's nothing like it. I use popcorn "pumper" poppers, but if you want no electric style you can use a hand crank jiffy popper, or just use your skillet. Then hand grind right before brewing. Goes great with bacon and eggs and a sunrise.

Im so sorry for your loss of your brother. As you said in another video, he is happy in heaven now. I lost my sister a year ago, drove like a maniac to get to her 4 hours before she passed away. Perhaps your brother and my sister have already met in heaven. I know my sister had been encouraging me to build the cabin she and I use to dream about together. She and I spent our childhood in the out doors exploring the woods, camping and building forts. Our fingernails were painted with dirt instead of polish and out perfume was campfire and wildflowers. Thank you for your videos of your builds. Over the last few years of her cancer and then this last year without her and the world seeming to be upside down, I began to believe my cottage dreams were selfish and that worry was more appropriate than joy and adventure and exploring the outdoors like I had done before my inner and outer world went dark. Seeing you press on with joy and enthusiasm for the natural world around you and to continue to create some how gives me permission to set aside the worry and the grieving to engage again in creating and building and beautifying the space around me. I feel like perhaps it isn’t selfish after all to experience joy in the midst of loss and an upside down world that doesn’t seem to want God to be a part of it anymore. ❤️
