I drove a well once by hand with my dad. (Also in Michigan) . Hardest part was finding a well point. Thankfully it was just for my animals and we struck water rather fast. Most clever thing I ever saw with this, was in Alaskan wilderness, a man put a barrel he found really high that filled up from roof runoff. The barrel was set at diagonal angle, so he could run a pipe from the bottom into the kitchen taps and so had running water.

Hi Dave Bring some dryer sheet with you when you go in the woods. wipe your skin & your hair with one sheet you wont even see any bugs around you they will never bite you. I use it all the time when I go out at night at home & every time I go in the woods. Let me know if you try it. You will never buy any bug spray again again. Take care I live in Ontario Canada.

My older brother of 18 months and I did a well the very same way when i was 6 years old. We tied a rope around the handle on the driver . Threw the other end up over a oak tree limb , climbed up a step ladder . Jumped off holding the rope, raising the driver and letting go when we hit the ground. Driving the pipe deeper then using a wedge pipe and chain to bring the pipe back out to check the moisture on the pipe. We continued this until we hit water. It was a amazing and unforgettable memory and experience.

Congratulations on your 100 K subscribers! In 1975 after graduating from college I purchased 28 acres in north central Louisiana. My first attempt to dig a well was with a pair of post hole diggers. After much blood, sweat , and tears the 30 inch hole was abandoned at 20 feet deep. The first rain left me with 22 feet of water in my 20 foot hole. It promptly caved in and I deemed it unsafe to continue. My next hole was dug with a 6 inch posthole auger with pipe extensions lowering the auger in the hole. I turned the auger with a large pipe wrench. It was a slow process. I finally quit at 32 feet. You could sneeze in that hole and blow dust in your face. I eventually hired a well digger and he hit water at 550 feet. It cost me over $10,000 for the well. So, congratulations on your well. You never miss the water until the well goes dry.
