RTR holds a special place for me as not only was it the first set I really dove into after coming back to Magic, but it was also the set that led me to discover LRR, as I was looking for MTG content and came upon MTGO Academy and the draft videos from Graham and James.

Being told we "Returned to Ravnica" 12yrs ago made me look up when Ravnica: City of Guilds was released. 2005 That was 19yrs ago. There are ppl at my LGS playing FNM that haven't lived a day without Ravnica existing. Fuck I'm old.

Stab Wound was so good in this limited format. If it wasn't straight up removal for an X/2 (or X/1 I suppose), it was a clock that often put your opponent in awkward positions

Fun fact about me and my personal play group. We all started in high school (around 2016) and for the first about year of us playing, the strongest deck was my green white lifegain deck, and the most powerful thing that deck could do was play a turn 3 centaur healer into a turn 4 shield of the oversoul on it. If i got the shield on the centaur, i was basically unbeatable

Original Ravnica had a subtheme of Auras mattering, so RTR followed up on that. And Red gets to grant Trample so that isn’t really unusual.

I remember coming back to RTR after a long hiatus and thinking the beetle was a bomb because of its stat-line. Turned out it wasn't even that good in limited. It just gets chumped by tokens so the scavenge never even comes up.

I feel like if deviant glee was printed with that art today there'd be a twitter thread about how it must be AI art because of the weird chain thing.
@bondeulvАй бұрын
The chain goes behind the head and is part of the costume I think?
@ThavleifrimАй бұрын
@@bondeulv yeah i could see that, really it was less a comment about the art and more thinking about how there's a band of people now looking to find the next big AI controversy to get their 5 minutes of fame and throwing any slightly incongruous piece of art under the bus as "must be AI" for example the recent sephiroth art that people decided must be AI because his belt buckle had a different design in the art compared to the game.

So Overload is just Kicker with more words.
@MordalonАй бұрын
It’s similar in that it is an additional cost for alternative/additional effect, but it’s not more words. Kicker often requires more words to explain what you get for the kicker, Overload just replaces all instances of one word with another.
@OmegatronaclesАй бұрын
@@Mordalon Kicker 3. If Kicker was paid, Replace Target with Each. Kicker with more words :)
@MordalonАй бұрын
@@Omegatronacles That's not how that works. Divine Resilience shows how it works with Kicker, and it requires things to still be targeted, which matters as there are many effects that care about you targeting your own things or targeting your opponent's things. Also, Kicker is an additional cost, Overload is an alternate cost, which very much matters. Damn, the card from MH, costs Black mana but has a mono White Overload cost, meaning you can cast it with just White mana. With Kicker it would require paying Black and White. And this is just the first of potential examples of Overload costs being different colors from their mana costs.
@OmegatronaclesАй бұрын
@@Mordalon I apologise that my flippant commentary has been taken at face value. I was making passing reference to the joke that every mechanic is just kicker, best summed up in TCC's video, however that joke did not land for you, and in doubling down on the joke I did not make that clear.
@MordalonАй бұрын
@@Omegatronacles TCC didn't invent that. He just took what MaRo already had said many times over the years about mechanics being similar. The actual line is how most mechanics are essentially Kicker or Split Cards (Additional cost for bigger effect or alternate cost for alternate effect)
