Fun fact: the rules insert is for Umbra Armor, which explains both the animals on Kor Spiritdancer and why picking it might actually be a decent idea in this format! (Full disclosure: I never drafted RoE and have no idea how good it is in the format.)

Removal was intentionally pretty poor, so stacking up a bunch of buffs on a dude was one of several reasonable "go tall" strategies. Not to mention that the umbra armors inherently insulate you from your guy getting killed.

It got a lot better when he did the art for the first 5 color Niv-Mizzet and also for all the Strixhaven elder dragons, which niv then can find. His art has moved away from the spiky style though unfortunately.
