8.15 통일 독트린 실현을 위한 민주평통 역할은?
Hello and welcome to Within the frame. I'm Han Da-eun in Seoul.
Reunification of the two Koreas seems more distant than ever, with North Korea making the unprecedented decision to abandon its long-held unification goals with South Korea.
Tensions are reaching new heights with the North forging ahead with its trash balloon campaign, missile provocations and seeking closer military ties with Russia while South Korea bolsters its security alliance with the United States.
But despite mounting challenges, efforts continue here in South Korea to work towards the goal of peaceful reunification with President Yoon Suk-yeol unveiling a new unification doctrine that put greater emphasis on liberal democracy.
As both nations continue to evolve, the question remains: Can the North and the South find a path toward reconciliation?
For some answers, we’ve invited a very special guest today. We have the honor to speak to Tae Yong-ho, Secretary-General of Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, who joins me in the studio.
Q1. You were named the head of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council in July, becoming the first North Korean defector to hold a vice-ministerial position in South Korea. How do you feel about it, and could you share more about the role and work of the council?
Q2. The council held a meeting with members of the council’s Municipal Chapter from North, Central and Latin American regions this week bringing together over 700 experts and advisors. What were the main agenda items? Walk us through the highlights.
Q3. President Yoon Suk Yeol attended the opening ceremony of the council’s meeting with American regions. What was his key message, and what are your thoughts on it?
Q4. North Korea remains silent on President Yoon’s new unification doctrine unveiled on August 15, South Korea’s National Liberation Day. What could be some possible reasons?
Q4-1. What’s your analysis of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s ‘two states’ narrative? What is he trying to gain by abandoning the North’s long standing unification goals with the South?
Q5. What practical steps are needed to move toward the realization of the August 15 unification blueprint, and what role should the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council play in this process?
Q6. The total number of North Korean defectors has dropped significantly in recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, but more elite North Koreans are fleeing to the South. Ri Il-gyu, a senior diplomat who defected to South Korea from Cuba, is one example. How do you see the current state of North Korean defections, and what would future defection trends look like?
Q7. Many South Koreans, especially younger generations, have grown increasingly skeptical about the reunification of the two Koreas, often questioning the need to invest significant efforts and financial resources toward this goal. From your perspective, why is unification still important?
Q8. You've now entered your second month as the head of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council. What are your key goals and priorities for your tenure?
And that brings us to the end of this show.
Thank you for watching, and be sure to tune in same time tomorrow to join our conversation.
Good bye for now.
