I just realized something about the ending of the sung version and the vocaloid version: They both play a piece of the song in the opposing songs key at the end. The two versions are a half-step apart. If put together, they sound dissonant, making a minor 2nd, the musical term for a really clashing pair of notes. What this means is while the songs lead to one another, they can never be heard together, or be together for that matter, like some of the meaning found in the music video. This is some simple yet amazing detail and storytelling to add onto the already beautiful song. This song is so wonderfully haunting and spine-tingling to listen to, and I really cannot express how much I appreciate this music. Here's some love from a sleepless English user

Super long theory: I think the meaning of this song might be quite straight forward. At least from my understanding this song is about not wanting to grow up. I think the protagonist and her friend (I'll call her Blue for now and her friend Yellow) made a promise about never growing up and staying children forever (0:48), but somehow Blue was left behind. When young, they decided that growing up wasn't the right way of living and that Grownups were just humans that forgot how to actually live and not just exist, unlike them ("So this is how to live a life right? Living is not just breathing, right?"). A representation of those Grownups that forgot how to live are the robots in this video. This is suggested by them holding onto train handles and them wearing suits at 0:40. In Japan most people use trains to get to/to leave work, so I think the robots are representing aldults going to/leaving work. The color Pink in this MV might represent "childishness", or the will to not "just exist", maybe even individuality. You can see one of the Robots looking to the side with pink eyes, while everyone else just looks straight ahead. In the end the robots gets forced to look straight ahead just like everyone else (2:04) which could represent him being pressured into acting and thinking like everyone else, again leading to just existing and not actually living. (This robot might be a child being pressured by their parents into acting the way society expects them to and being forced to "grow up", forgetting their "childishness" ("Eventually, we will forget we once were kids")). I think the airship in this MV is a representation of the act of "growing up", entering this ship officialy makes you an adult, maybe just like using the train to get to your first job for the first time. "The final Bell rings, the two will be left behind, the grownups are worried that they're not sane" probably means that the adults that knew Blue and Yellow were worried that something was wrong with them because they weren't acting like everyone else and didn't "grow up", like they were supposed to. The "final bell" probably represent the last bell/announcement before the airship to aduldthood leaves the station. I think Yellow took her own life a long time before this video took place (maybe because she noticed that there wasn't a chance of them winning this fight, at 2:17 you can see the airship of adulthood looming over them, maybe Yellow noticed that there wasnt a chance of running away from this) and that Blue is on her way to "join" Yellow by killing herself as well (hence the title "Reunion", they'll finally meet again after death, this is also suggested by Blue thinking this at the beginning of the video: "I wonder if you remember my voice, I wonder how we talked to each other, we've both grown", suggesting that she hasn't seen Yellow in a while and that she wonders if they'll even recognize each other when they finally meet again). You can see Blue looking at her watch multiple times, this might represents her thinking that her time has finally come to join Yellow. After falling from the cliff at 3:20 we can see her into a pink stream of color. Before this there was a yellow stream of color (2:43) which probably represents Yellow killing herself just like Blue at some point before this. Finally, at the end of the video you can see the two streams flying in the sky while the airship to adulthood leaves without Blue and Yellow. Well this is how I understood this MV at least, sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes, english is not my first language :) Ah, can I also say, Harumaki Gohans voice is so pretty and soothing!

I think that's an excellent theory. I was thinking something along similar lines, but not quite the same - I kind of think the song is about a suicide pact between the two of them. My theory is the two girls grew up together and, like you said, agreed that adulthood wasn't for them if it meant losing themselves, and so they decided to both kill themselves at the moment they reached it (I think you're spot-on with the airship as a metaphor for adulthood). This is also because of lines around 3:04 where it's implied that the two girls have gone off to do something and the adults are worried about them but don't take them seriously enough to stop them. I think that they were separated a while ago, when their paths of growing up diverged, thus why they're on different towers going to different airships, if we're sticking with the airships-taking-off-is-adulthood-metaphor, but they both stuck to the decision they made back when they were together in the hopes that it would bring them together again. That's why their paths mirror one another; they're going through the same actions, but just mimicking each other can never truly bring them together again. Like, there's this poem by Andrew Marvell called The Definition of Love, and there's a bit in it where he writes 'as lines, so loves oblique may well / themselves in every angle greet; / but ours, so truly parallel, / though infinite, can never meet.' and this song strikes me as the absolute embodiment of that.

@@beiyuimpact4636 yeah, I can see that; apparently in Japan romantic relationships between girls is societally seen as “something you do when you’re younger as practice for a ‘real relationship’, something you grow out of” So I can see the “not wanting to grow up if it means losing ourselves” thing as something like that, where it’s like “if growing up means that we can’t love each other anymore, we don’t ever want to grow up”
if you play both versions at the same time, there is an obvious dissonance in the melody, further emphasizing the story behind the song, absolutely genius

Harumaki Gohan's music videos always evoke these emotions and have beautiful lyrics! It really makes me fall in in love his songs so easily. Also, I'm very greatfull for the English translations!
>mfw official english subs The Miku cover of the song's MV is pretty different, it's from the other girl's POV. The top link in the description will take you there. Even the note the pink drop falls on at 3:10 is different. Notes: The community post calls this 'A song of two who come to meet'. Something else that caught my attention - The two lines from 2:17, in the official translation: "So this is how to live a life, right? Living is not just breathing, right?" The second half sounds (meaning-wise) like, 'there's more to living than just breathing (being physically alive)', almost like some sort of inspirational quote, but more literally, the second line never says not *just* breathing. More literally it reads, "It's not breathing, right?" To the girls, the way for them to 'live', ironically, is to die, it sounds like. Other assorted thoughts: - The crosses formed by the airship and the landing decks at the beginning and end - The time on all the clocks being the same (just before 6, the ending watch is mirrored so that it is upside down because their worlds are mirrored ~2:38, also you can check the other MV) - The fact that the sun being partially covered by the airship(?) recieves a closeup and appears in the flackback makes me think it means something, but I have no idea - The two different piano notes the pink drop falls on (it's pink in both MVs, interestingly) - At 3:19 when she falls off the deck she leaves behind two pink trails, in the ending (3:53) it's cleaned and replaced by the robot, while in the other MV the respective yellow marks are left - When they crash at 3:45 they split with yellow and pink lines respectively, but it ends in two pink lines, rather than 1 yellow and 1 pink - Elevator scene (0:32): Pink appears to be wearing different clothing from the photo. Yellow wears the same clothes as in the picture in her MV, and doesn't react at all to the exploding head robot, whereas pink flinches and looks over. - Desks (1:26): Yellow's desk has a picture of pink holding her roomba-like robot while yellow holds the bird-like thing that only appears on pink's desk on the right

I'm thinking that yellow is an imaginary friend? (which explains why it ends in two pinks) The MV is about pink growing up - perhaps 6 represents 6 years old? Many Japanese people have high expectations for their child etc etc expect them to be mature since young - the air ship represents their childhood until the time where she jumps off the ship is when shes "grown up" - maybe the cross means religion or the belief on how they should act at a certain age - the yellow marks are left on the ship cause shes an imaginary friend which exists only on the ship, cause children tend to have them - different clothing cause different dressing style as pink grows older but yellow remains the same old - im guessing the desk objects are memorials?

This is my interpretation of what the story is in this MV. It isn't what you think it is... _(Read the whole thing, cause it's kinda important if you want to understand what's actually going on!)_ Its been stated from a comment in the "Secret" MV (which was believed to be the sequel of this video) that the world appeared barren and deserted. It could be the aesthetic of the video, but Reunion proves this otherwise. Remember the huge structure in the beginning of the MV? It's a ship. A ship that will leave their planet, which the girls were supposed to get on board. Thats what the robots were lining up for. This explains why the world in "Secret" appears barren, a clear contrast of the MV of "Promise" I believe the reason they are trying to leave is because a comet had struck their planet, and the planet will slowly lose its habitability for life. It's been hinted this whole time, where the girls are depicted falling through the sky, like a comet. Particularly at 1:00-1:35 The time on the huge clock is one minite from stricking five. Once the clock strikes, the ship leaves, which was why the girls were looking at their watch. The girls in the end didn't jump to commit suicide. It was simply how their choice of staying behind was depicted. It was seen as something suicidal. Its heavily implied by the lyrics at 2:59-3:13. _The final bell rings_ *_They two will be left behind_* _The grownups are worried that_ _they two are not sane..._ _The final bell rings_ _They two are surely alive..._ They chose to stay on their dying planet. Once they get on their ship and it leaves, it'll hinder all chance of them being reunited. They'll be forever seperated. And the end of this shows that they're aware of this. Eventually, they'll die because of this choice. But the final scene showing them meeting together and disappearing when clashed shows that *_they'd rather die together on the planet than continue living and forgetting those times when they were together as kids._* This tells me that this story will end with them dying (tragic, I know), but them dying together in the last song of this series. The two girls get left behind. One became the "ruler" of the others who were left behind too, since she was born froma rich family. The other became some outcast and had to fend for herself since no one pretty much noticed her since she came from a normal family. That girl spent years searching the blonde girl who became a queen of sorts. Eventually, they reunite and she saves the queen from the life sentence she was forced to live through just because she stayed. They'll die eventually, but they have each other in the end. Harumaki decided to hide the true story behind the song and MV, like a code you have to break through. The way he disguised it as something else is genius! Massive props to him! Also, this is pretty interesting, cause it also correlates with Meltyland Nightmare, another song by the same person (tho its from another album) that was speculated to be connected with this story. In the MV of that song, it was actually mentioned that a meteor was about to hit their world, but it wasn't delved into that much. And the characters have some resemblance to the characters too and "Promise" had some reference to the colors of the characters in Meltyland Nightmare. Maybe the Meltyland Nightmare is actually some prototype of this current storyline and was the inspiration behind it. That would make sense to me.
@asnad594 жыл бұрын
Cool theory! The comet seems to be convincing too since his new song "彗星になれたなら(gtranslate: If you can become a comet)" came in lately. Also, since you mentioned about the dying planet, somehow I have thoughts on another song; "This Earth, for You" made by the same artist (but though the song shouldn't be related) and my mind just goes into cycle with these songs.
@allycake87404 жыл бұрын
that does make a lot of sense :o also, in the recent livestream, harumaki gohan actually clarified that melty land nightmare is from a seperate series which has no relation to this one, so that last part was proven to be wrong. the rest of it still sounds great though
@sobersplash61724 жыл бұрын
I think the setting is supposed to be metaphorical, the ship being the ship to adulthood But I can’t help but see their committing suicide as literal, with how Birth is
the fact that these two both look strikingly similar to pink and blue from melty land nightmare makes me feel that these two ARE them and this takes place before that song edit: i still stand by my theory that this is melty land nightmare 2.0 or at least takes time somewhere between that song. these two (im gonna call reunion pink and yellow) look extremely similar, which im starting to think it was done deliberately, to melty pink and blue. the main thing i got from this song is that reunion pink and yellow are awaiting a reunion which will never come. in melty land nightmare, blue visits melty pink in her dreams because her real life isnt going well for her so pink comforts blue out of her sadness. eventually, however, blue leaves pink and she's eventually forgotten. my main theory here is that reunion pink and yellow were best friends growing up and started seeing less of other as time went past. They both felt the pressures of becoming an adult and leaving your childhood behind which leads to one of them committing suicide (which im going to say is reunion pink) we enter MLN territory as yellow starts to struggle more with her life and can only escape in her sleep and dreams where she (dressed as blue) meets melty pink. if reunion pink is the one that committed suicide, then its most likely she came back as melty pink and a spirit in yellow's dreams. this could also be why reunion and melty pink are the same color. i could also say that the reason why yellow is blue in her dreams is because in reality, shes unhappy with her situation. we all know how the story ends there through: blue eventually leaves melty land and melty pink is forgotten. i could interpret that as yellow waking up from her sleep into reality (as you can forget dreams after waking up) and came back to melty land when she went back to sleep (which is why the song mentions that blue has visited her thousands of times) i find it awfully sad because no matter how you see it, both girls in MLN and this song can never truly be together. blue can't remember melty pink every time she visits and reunion pink and yellow can't be together as they are, quite literally as yellow's POV is on niconico, in parallel worlds. it the end, ill probably say that its likely that yellow did end up committing suicide in the hopes that she would join reunion pink in death as well as pressure. i do know that there are some theories that yellow may of been the first to go or that she's the representation of a imaginary friend/childhood that reunion pink eventually has to let go. the NN MV does make it hard since it's from yellow's POV but thats what I got from this one and thats why harumaki gohan is a legend
@smallmits78805 жыл бұрын
Giovanni Fuego i personally think at least for now that MLN may take place maybe during this song? or at least somewhere in between because while the title is called reunion, its a reunion that wont come to pass. at least in my interpretation

so now that the full series is out, has this theory changed? i was actually just wondering if anyone thought this was a sequel to mln when this first came out lol
@amethyst45782 жыл бұрын
ok i know i already replied but i HAVE to say this. as much as i loveloveLOVE this theory, as someone who knows a lot about the harumaki gohan lore from reading the album artbooks... this theory is literally impossible. so in the harugo canon you've got the blue planet, which is where futari no takes place. but you've ALSO got dream planets, special planets that humans can visit in their sleep, which currently includes the melty land and seventina (although there's WAY more, they're jusy undiscovered). but here's the thing - *the blue planet and dream planets are in the same universe.* not only that, but melty is impled to have existed for a REALLY long time, while nana and lili were 21 when they heckin died. so there's actually a good chance that futari no and melty land nightmare are going at the same time. it's depressing to debunk this but the harugo lore is actually REALLY cool and the official meanings for a lot of his songs are better than the fan theories a lot of the time (just my opinion though) so i highly recommend reading up on it! you won't regret it (the artbooks are in japanese though so you can either check out the harumaki gohan wiki or read tick's translations which can be found on his twitter [harugo_eng])
