Rev'It Sand 3 vs. Held Sambia: Summer Glove Showdown and Review

The warm months are coming and it is time to put away those three-season gloves to play in the sun. I have narrowed the best of the best down to the RevIt Sand 3 and Held Sambia gloves. This will be our final, winner takes all showdown and I can tell you right now, it was close. We do have a winner though and you will just have to check out the video to see who takes the top prize. I was really surprised how much of a factor these inside seams were to the comfort of the glove. It was like night and day and immediately made my Rev'It Sand 3s a secondary consideration.

So the Held gloves have mesh too but they also have slots in the hard plastic knuckles which seem to “grab” more air for the hands. There are also small vent holes in the palm to flow air. The Sand gloves also have mesh but don’t seem to flow as well. They are both great warm weather gloves that I use on the hottest of NC days but I prefer the Held gloves for everything, including their ventilation.

I've been using Dainese for a long time and still used them for track riding. I picked up a pair of Klim Latitude's to go with my new jacket. They vent like crazy!!!! My only complaints about them are no scaphoid protection and the material that allows you to use touch screen devices basically doesn't work. Other then that they are a fantastic road glove!!!!!!! I haven't started playing in the dirt yet.... I also have a set of Held Air and Dry's for all around usage. They have been pretty damn good as well. Held makes really great stuff. I heard that they pulled their race suits out of the US market so hopefully they aren't going to pull anything else....

That would be such a shame if they pulled the entire lineup but I think you have convinced me to buy a couple of extra gloves to hold in reserve now, just in case.

I got my first ride of the season in this morning to work. 37 degrees, wore my Held Air and Dry in the Air setting, big mistake. Hopefully it'll be 55 on the way home tonight...

Ok, I was told by someone that ordered a set of Air and Dry's like mine that Held isn't importing gloves anymore. Not counting on that 100% but if your done buying TP it's time to buy Held stuff hahahaha.

It’s tough to say because I haven’t bought many different brands. All the gloves I have ( 2 Rev’Its and the Helds) are the exact same size, XXL.

Revit has serious quality control issues. A lot of their gear is made in Romania, and in Romania it is legal to drink on the job. At least that could be an explanation for all the crooked stich lines and loose thread ends. Sometime they forget to include the waterproof membranes on one side of the pair of boots/gloves.

I don’t know if that is true but it is the absolute funniest excuse I’ve heard yet for quality control issues. I only have one pair or RevIts that I use pretty routinely and I’ve been happy with them but for the summer weight stuff it has always been Held for me.

Did the Thumb tips lasted at all for you? Mine started to rip pretty fast. I was kinda disapointed to see they were not real leather like the rest of the glove.

I never noticed any issues with ripping on either pair. My other GTX RevIt gloves lost finger tips but these summer weight gloves have performed really well.

The Klim gloves I tried were the same size as the Rev-Its and Helds that I have and probably were a tad too small. It wasn’t a massive difference but I would have preferred a slightly larger fit.

Hey, what's the difference between those Sambia "KTC" and the Sambia "PRO" ? They look very similar. Thanks.

I agree, they look exceptionally similar. I wasn't even aware that the KTC existed. With just a quick look I don't see anything that jumps out as wildly different except the cuff on the KTC and, of course, the price. With the $80 difference, I would imagine there is some reason for the Sambia to be more expensive but I don't know what it could be.

I tried both the sand 3 and the sambia. The Sambia fingers are a little long for the size to me, and the palm feels tight when I make a fist due to the plastic knuckles. Will the palm of the Sambia (especially pressure on the knuckles) break in? I actually can't stand the Sand 3. The pinky is unusably stiff, and the seams on the top of the fingers kind of hurt. If they made the pinky flexible and made the seams more comfortable, the Sand 3 would be perfect.

I totally agree. I was disappointed with the Sand 3s because with just a few subtle changes they would be perfect. Right now the Sambia is my go to but I honestly don't think I have gotten much stretch out of them. We are probably coming at this from opposite ends of the sizing issue though. I have to go WAY up in sizing because my fingers are long but that just gives me a ton of extra room in the hand so flex isn't an issue for me. Have you tried to see if going up a size extends the fingers any further and might get you a little more room around the palm? If that doesn't work then maybe we need to start checking out an alternative to these two "almost there" options. ;-)

@@BeGoneForGood I was under the impression that the material on the back of the Sambia is spandex. Isn't it allowing for more stretch? I am between sizes with Held gloves and I was thinking of going smaller with the Sambia. Last time I went up (with the Held Desert) and it didn't end up well: fingers slightly too long and painful pressure at the joint of the phalanges of one of the pinkies caused by a badly positioned seam.

The back has stretch for sure and I apologize for not being more clear about what I was saying. The OP asked about the palm loosening and I don't think my leather has given up much from the start. The rear might do some stretching but the hard plastic definitely can feel restrictive. I would always go for the larger size if between two but my hands are shaped pretty big.

@@ezsteel78 My issue was with the hard plastic knuckles. If you imagine your hand is wrapped by leather on the palm and plastic knuckles on the back, the plastic knuckles and leather palm was the tightest spot for me. Even though the back is stretchy fabric, the plastic will not stretch. If Held were to redesign the Sambia with slightly shorter fingers (for me) and no hard plastic knuckles and better velcro and a better wrist (less TPU), it would be the perfect glove. Or if the Sand 3 would stitch the glove like the Held and remove some material from the side of the pinky (and remove the stupid branding stripe), the Sand 3 would be the perfect glove.

@@kyl3dr Most of Held gloves are manufactured in three variants: regular, extra long fingers, and extra short fingers. Unfortunately, importers do not always bother with getting the non-standard lengths, but they are obtainable at fc-moto.de

Revit sizes are completly wrong. I wear 9 - in rev'it I need two sizes more. Insane.

Held is a Glove Company that make riding gear, their focus are gloves. Revit is a gear company, that does gloves. They make good gloves, but not as good as Held form my experience.

That is a really great point. I haven't had nearly as much luck with the RevIt line as I did with the Held gloves.

Held uses high quality leather that is being produced with artisan techniques. They use the outer hide, and the leather is coloured through. To get them wet 1 time after purchase is part of the intended process to make them fitting perfect to the customer's hands. The disadvantage is the colour transfer onto the skin. They could avoid most of it by using a thicker liner, but that defeats the purpose of a summer glove. Other companies use leather that is only surface-coated by the colouring material. That of course is far not as good. You can see the difference by looking at the inside. If the inside is grey, that means they are coated gloves.

Ooh first. This is too tempting to pass up....so gloves seem an appreciate topic to review given the news. Can we expect face shields, bandanas, chin skirts and other face mask-esque products next? I’d love to see your review of those 😜 but please let’s not try filming in a hospital gown. You haven’t the legs for it. But seriously though maybe you could share or brainstorm with viewers for tips for riders who want to get out during the self Isolation (motorcycling being a self Isolated activity itself and while largely geared up is somewhat protective ) but at the same time doing good for those around them? We may not have the cargo capacity of others but I could see running small errands for those in need might give us that needed riding fix and do good at the same time. Eg. I could carry a 12 pack of TP and distribute rolls to strangers as a random act of kindness. Weird? I don’t know. But “on brand” at least. Other ideas?

This is a brilliant idea and one I battle with a little. I understand the desire to ride but I am also sympathetic to the mentality that says even though we are "self isolating" with a ride, we could also tax an already heavily needed medical industry if we had any crashes or whatever. When they talk about limiting all "non-essential" activities, I tend to include riding in that mix...even though it pains me to think that way. Your idea seems to be a great work around for those of us going a little stir crazy with a garaged bike. Plus it is only going to get worse as the weather gets nicer in more and more areas of the country. There are essential things you can do with a non-essential ride so maybe we can all work together on this. I don't know about anyone else but we have a neighborhood Facebook group that allows all of our neighbors to interact about parties, parking, safety issues and such. I would imagine a volunteer rider could put out an offer on a group like that to pick up groceries or other necessities for people in the neighborhood as needed. That would allow for some riding time while also ensuring there is a purpose for being on the road. This sound like a great out of the box idea for getting some miles in while doing some real good for your community. I think you just secured a spot in one my upcoming vids. When it comes to abrasion, you can't barely get anything better than Polyurethane! Forget plastics! Polyurethane has half the abrasion of typical tire rubber ... and think how resitant this is already to abrasion on the road! PS: too much face on, too less product ;(

I thought people loved my face. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinions. ;-) I honestly didn't realize there was a difference between polyurethane and plastic but it all seems like a similar family to me. If it is anything like rubber though I think that could also be an issue in a get off. The plastics might burn up but they will at least slide on the pavement. I think the possibility of catching or "sticking" could be really detrimental as you are careening off the bike. Anything to help with impact and slide should be a good start and from there we can all make a determination of what we value in our safety gear. @@BeGoneForGood You're welcome! Plastics can be divided into thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers. Rubber and most polyurethanes (PUR) are elastomers. Carbon is mostly embedded in thermosets (resin) Polyethylene (a good sliding material) is thermoplastic. A good polyurethane (not foam, of course!) has a normalized abrasion of 40 (mm^3) on sandpaper. A tire about 100. With plastics and thermosets but also metal even significantly more. I would always prefer polyurethane over a plastic or carbon protector. As far as abrasion is concerned, just like the possible energy absorption. Of course, the PUR must be well anchored to the glove! My carbon protector broke my metacarpal. At walking speed...
