During a previous attempt at reviewing the Nitecore EDC27, I discovered a flaw that melted my pockets, and my flashlight. The people at Nitecore were receptive to making changes and immediately got to work to revamp the EDC27. In today's video we discuss the changes and whether, In my opinion, the changes were enough to correct the user's experience.

Thanks for the honest review! Great to know, I was looking at this light for future purchase. I use quite a few Nitecore products including their chargers and tend to trust their manufacture process. That being said I will hold off till they address this issue. I would hate to depend on this light and the battery is discharged without me knowing it.

I bought this light and love it! It has worked flawlessly for me. The design and concept behind it allows me comfort in EDC and convenience working in an investigations unit. Using the light as it was designed to be carried, (utilizing the sturdy metal pocket clip), not once has it come on accidentally and that’s without even using the level 1 locking setting. By carrying the flash light as it was designed to be carried, the portion of it that protrudes from the pocket doesn’t make contact with anything to turn on. I personally don’t want a mechanical lock because that is something else to catch lint, grime, and have to manipulate if my fine motor skills are out the door in a high stress situation. I’m considering buying another one because of its incredible functionality. A good percentage of my coworkers are considering this light and individuals I’ve met in classes. I do appreciate the review though.

Mine kept coming on in my pocket even after I locked it. Then I discovered that when you charge it, this disables the electronic lockout. When I charge now, I ensure I put it back in lockout afterwards and no more accidents.

I wish they'd drop the strobe and turbo and give us single stage, tactile switches. Hold down both buttons for lockout. One for power, one for modes.

I've been carrying the EDC 27 for 2 weeks now. Having immediate access to strobe as a security deterrent was one of the main reasons I purchased. I keep it in lock 1 mode for this reason and have not experienced accidental turn-on, probably because I carry on the outside of the pocket. The biggest criticism is that in lock 1 mode you have to tap and hold a bit longer than I feel is ideal for the light to come on. It's not a deal-breaker for me. Then, to keep in lock 1 mode, you have to press and hold till the light turns off (a short wait). I think this is a minor annoyance to preserve emergency access to strobe/turbo and also assure that there's no accidental battery drain (as mentioned, the proximity sensor has solved the accidental burning issue). Agree a mechanical lock-out might be a better solution.

i'm not a fan of the electronic lockout either. i stopped using my tm9k tac because the lockout function kept malfunctioning. i am not risking 9000 lumens setting my purse or pocket on fire. a mechanical lockout would be better.

So odd you’re having issues Still. I have the updated model and haven’t experienced any issues so far. A mechanical lockout would be good though. Or just keep the flush tail cap for the turbo/strobe, and make the other modes via a slider on the side.
@TheRealLeonJ
@TheRealLeonJ 10 ай бұрын
I agree with others that even a simple bezel or "crown" that rises above the button with some relief cuts to still allow for good thumb access would be a simple fix to this issue. I'd love to see that over a mechanical lockout, so that when deployed with a hammer fist grip, the grip wouldn't need to be adjusted or broken to activate the light. Just my .02.

Nitecore has put the mechanical lockout switch on the EDC33. Better later then never. There is this fixation with strobe and turbo being available at all times. Maybe the 0.1% of the people here needs the capability, but the manufacturers give top priority to this feature, because it is required by the local market. Maybe they should create a programming feature which allows to disable the turbo&strobe being available out-of-sequence...

I agree these electronic button lockouts are total nonsense and should go away for good. This urgently needs a slider lockout like they did on the new EDC33 that I recently bought. That being said I prefer the two button UI on the EDC27, it gives quick access to momentary boost, strobe and low light apart from permanent switch on but all of that is in vain without having a good lockout, bummer.

I really don't get it. I have had this since it was released. I have never had this come on in my pocket. Are you completely putting this all the way into your pants pocket? That is the only way I could even fathom this happening. I don't lock this out and carry it in a shirt pocket, a jacket pocket and clipped in my left side pants pocket and I have zero problems. This reminds me of what went on with the original Olight Warrior Mini. I never had a problem with that one coming on in pocket either. I carried it until upgrades came out and upgraded for more lumen output. I had given at lest 3 away to friends and family and no one I know had a problem. Now I will agree wholeheartedly that on a flashlight with this form factor (no tail switch to tail switch to loosen to break connection) a physical mechanical switch to lock out the light would be better for people wanting to lock the light out.

I have an Imalent DX80, a 32,000 lumen light, with an electronic lockout. This is not a pocket carry light and I still have issues and anxiety attacks about it spontaneously switching on if I look at it funny. Electronic lockouts are essentially compromises between safety & convenience. And for the product designer they are a compromise between safety & manufacturing cost. A well designed mechanical lockout will always win on safety.

Test to see if there’s a proximity sensor. Select high mode or turbo and while the light is on, place the lens near an object (even just the palm of your hand) to see if the sensor automatically triggers a reduced light/lumens/heat output. If that happens, you have the updated/upgraded model/version.
