Dear Kate, I always look forward to your videos! One tip from watching others do veneer, they usually take a rubber roller and go over the veneer while the glue is still wet to get out the bubbles. Maybe even try a rolling pin? Keep up the amazing work, you always inspire me!❤

And contact cement instead as well or the kind with the 3M backing . I believe the reason white glue usually isn’t used is the water content in it. It will cause it to not lay flat .. ie bubbles and lifting . But as I said above I think it’s best it didn’t work out because what did in the end turned out beautiful

I have not had success with veneer that needs to be glued versus iron on pre glued. I used contact cement; wood glue; j-rolling; weight across the entire surface- it was a bust. The pre glued iron on was much easier. But the end result here was amazing.

The quality of American furniture really hit the skids in the 1970s because of the inflation during that time. I'm amazed you are able to make these pieces look good because most have no real antique value because fake veneers, etc. They are terrible quality. It was during the 70s that I started to really appreciate REAL wood old furniture that was well built. Great job, as usual.

😮 Wow. I always love a good proper restoration but you are SO good at taking the kinda ugly ones, or less fancy materials ones, or truly on the way to the bin ones and making them gorgeous and high end looking. These transformations are my favourite. I'm a "DON'T PAINT THAT" person for sure when it comes to real woods, but these ones that get passed over are just as impressive in your hands and it's so so important for people to see that. I would love to see first time or beginner flippers or DIYers learn to work on these and you give them the inspiration to do that.

This project turned out lovely, in spite of little things that didn't go exactly according to plan. 👍🏻 Regarding glue-on veneer ... (1)Contact Cement is the best way to go with glue bonded veneer; never use a water-based/standard wood glue because the wood fibers in the veneer unevenly absorb moisture from the glue and expand, hence the lumpy bubbles; (2) Using a brayer/veneer roller is the best way to apply firm even preseure over the entire veneered surface to get a smooth consistent bond, even when using contact cement. One nifty benefit of using contact cement is that once the veneer is lined up accurately and the spacers are removed to allow the two surfaces to meet, followed by rolling the veneer to assure thorough contact, the job is a done deal and that veneer is not going anywhere! Ta da! There are informative videos online concerning using contact cement, although some of the best are focused on applying counter surfacing, not veneer. It's the same process.

Wow! What a transformation. It looks fabulous with its whole new look. I’m not the younger generation who likes the modern look but I have to say it looks just like it’s on the show room to sell. Happy to hear you had fun with it. On doing the veneer it helps to use a roller n if there’s bubbles try a heated iron on it to activate the glue n roll it out. ♥️♥️👏👏👍👍🌟

I seem to remember others using contact cement to secure veneer, not wood glue. I think the water in the wood glue, makes the veneer buckle. I’m no expert, just passing along what I’ve seen before. The dresser turned out beautifully, without it, way to switch gears and soldier on! Beautiful!

You created such a beautiful and unique design here. I do hope you won't let this experience discourage you from working with veneer. It can be a really rewarding process. I usually work with unbacked veneer that I get in bundles off eBay and apply it with a hot iron. You just apply pva glue to your surface and the back of the veneer as evenly as possible and let it dry. Then iron it down, I like to go over the edges at an angle, and trim the excess once it's had time to cool and set up. There'll be a lot less bubbling. There's also contact cement but I like doing it this way. It offers a little more control because it doesn't adhere on contact like contact cement does and the veneer also won't shift around as much as it does using the glue and clamp method.
@user-rc4oy6so3b

Use a warm iron to spread that glue evenly under that laminate. Then take a smooth board the same size . The sandwich the laminate layer between and clamp evenly. A rolling pin could also spread that glue evenly

Such a beautiful outcome! Very elegant and creative take on the sunshine vibe! The re-tique faux wood look turned out fantastic but I wish they gave better instruction w/the veneer. You can do it -I learned to apply veneer from my dad who eons ago used to rehab donated furniture to the church for needy families (in his spare time between 3 kids, job and volunteer firefighter and paramedic!). The veneer instructions should have said to add weight across the whole surface (on top of the flat surface material that you put on the veneer). The uneven pressure of the clamps allowed the bubbles to form. Plus they also left out the use of veneer adhesive and the need to roll out to avoid bubbles. If you try again, here’s what I recommend: They make specific adhesive for applying veneer so use that instead of wood glue. Use a roller atop the veneer to work out air/glue bubbles. Place a piece of a sturdy, flat material, larger on all sides than the veneer on top of the veneer. Place weight evenly and beyond the edges of the veneer, leaving no area bare. You can use any smooth, flat material that’s bigger than the veneer. I use an extra 18” sq tile for smaller pieces bc it adds weight too, but the key is the topper always has to be larger than the veneer. I use plywood for bigger pieces of veneer like the end tables I’m doing now. For weight, I use old coffee table books or big textbooks from the thrift store or bricks, depending on the size and thickness of the veneer. The key is to keep the weight consistent so don’t go too heavy next to lighter weight object to avoid warp/bubbles. Make sure the weight goes evenly across the whole veneer, over the edges too so there’s nowhere for it to bubble up. Put the books/bricks edge to edge on top, to ensure even pressure. I hope you do try veneer again, it’s only daunting bc it’s something you haven’t done before, but you have mad skills so I hope you give it another try! And thank you for inspiring so many people to rehab tired furniture and put their artistic talents to work.😊 It makes my ❤ happy to see 😊
