The easiest way I've found to stencil for embroidery is to print/draw the image you want to embroider on printer paper, then use the long side of a chalk stick to rub all over the back of the image. Gently lay the paper into the fabric where you want the design, pin it, then trace hard over the image outline with a stylus so the pressure presses the chalk into the fabric. Super simple and washes out well

I’m in the process of looking at each garment in my wardrobe that I don’t reach for to wear and deciding what to do to make it more me. I took at sweatshirt that the bottom band was too tight on and combined it with a sweatshirt that had worn out along with a thrifted shirt. It now has a zip up the front and a hood and the bottom band is bigger. I have worn it nearly every day since. I love the idea of the crochet extension on your pants! I frequently need to lengthen pants, especially thrifted ones - I can see me using crochet on the thrifted linen pants in my pile, after I dye them navy!

What good choices you made here! You seem to be becoming more yourself all the time, if that makes sense. I have begun to embrace visible mending, as introduced to me by The Green Wrapper vlog. I am a senior woman in the north woods of Michigan with a house full of "what if?" My strategy is to use up what is reasonable and pass the rest to someone who can use it. More and more I require less and less! I have begun creating Zokin cleaning cloths from old t-shirts for my dishcloths . The first ones were utilitarian to a degree, but I realized I could draw pictures with a needle and they would still function beautifully (pun intended) and keep my busy creative mind and hands happy. Thank you for your calm reflections, your continuing search for beauty and inspiration, and the glimpses of another world that you provide your online community! Happy holidays and stay warm!

I like all the three changes you did to your clothes ❤. As someone who loves sewing, I want to add that a sewing machine hasn’t to be expensive. I only sew with very old sewing machines and never would buy a modern one. The old ones are (for example an old singer) as good as the modern ones or even better. The old ones are always repairable, the expensive modern ones aren’t. The old ones are very cheap, you can get one for about 50 € (here in Germany). Maybe you have to clean and oil it, but the most machines will work perfectly then.

Ana!! I think *you* are so full of beauty, harmony and symmetry! I truly loved these 3 ideas and I'm proud of you promoting that it's easy enough to hand sew. Well, ok, because I'm all about hand sewing myself, but there's a certain zen and satisfaction in completing projects with simply a needle and thread. I do macrame so maybe I'll try a little macrame edge for one of my pants that are a bit on the short side, too. Hope you find other fun ideas to revamp more clothes! 💖

Such a great idea to swap our buttons, which also works for old wool coats (there are many in Thrift Store, though the buttons are usually awful). I sew a lot of my dresses and once made one with the buttons unequal distances apart. No one said anything, but they would always stare at them, which made me laugh afterwards.

Great ideas Ana! I've been changing buttons on clothes for decades now! I started out of necessity on blazers and cardigan because I abhor the gold-coloured buttons they often have! Personally I prefer white metal or shell buttons but I I keep an open mind when thrifting as sometimes you can find some quirky gems! I'm not one for crochet or knitting but I love how your black pants came out. 😊 I recently had a pair of new-ish jeans split along a back pocket. I figured there must have been a fault in the fabric because there is no way this happened simply from use. I put a thin cotton patch on the inside and used sashiko embroidery to keep it in place. The rip is still visible, which I like because it tells the story of those jeans, and the contrast thread (in many shades of blue and white) makes a great pattern on the jeans themselves. I've had people actually ask me where I bought my jeans because they are so cool! 😂

Those red buttons! You took a nice shirt, and turned it into something playful and expressive. I love the impact of using contrasting thread. I have had some improvement in my health, and now the pants I am wearing are too big. I hate seaming....you've inspired me to maybe do some lacing up the sides with embroidery floss. No need to cut anything, and if I get bigger again, I could just let them out again... Hmmmmmm...

There is a dissolving transfer decal, Sulky Solvy, that you can print the design onto like paper, then it sticks to the fabric like a sticker. You embroider right over it, then wash and it dissolves. I've embroidered such complex designs, and it was an absolute cinch (well the design transfer was easy).

Especially love the embroidery detail on the linen dress. The crochet ends to the black pants wasn’t as beautiful to me because I foremost am thinking the black of the pants wasn’t portrayed well on screen but still, the pants weren’t my preferred style so it could also be that. It is gorgeous in real life, I’m betting! And I’m guessing it will be an awesome trick to do with pants my style… though, now that I’m envisioning this with a nice flared denim like pair of pants, I’m suddenly remembering the 7/8 leg length red trousers that, on my short self, is more like a 14/15. It always bothered me slightly but they’re too comfy to ditch so I think I’ll go shopping for either the right color in red or find a multicolored one I like, think that will be beautiful. Might even look out for the right feel and thickness so that I can embroider a bit on a leg or pocket to give it a more coherent look, that might be neat as well. All in all thanks for all the inspiration, we might have different styles (though if I had your body style, I would definitely go more towards your style, love the style, just doesn’t match my body as well as I would need it to be to feel comfy enough) but I still can do so much with your examples. Inspiration can come from the weirdest, most different of sources sometimes so no wonder there 😊

I’ve done boro stitching on a blue shirt I was tired of. It is a Japanese embroidery that is very old and rather monochromatic and I just love it. It’s very relaxing to do. I also love looking at photos of the really old garments in museums and so on. I think you might enjoy it, too. I love what you have done to these three items. I find interesting buttons are quite expensive and what a great idea to thrift a garment and reuse the buttons. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you for sharing these tips and techniques, Ana. I have used the thrift store button swap idea many times in the past with great success. Along those same lines, I have thrifted pillowcases with crocheted edges, cut the crocheted ends off, and sewed it onto pant or top bottoms for a different look. Then, you can dye the entire garment a color of your choice. This is a nice option for those of us who do not crochet, maybe have arthritis in our hands, or don't want to take the time to do it. The result is very beautiful. Thank you again, Ana. Every time I see a video from you, I stop and watch. Please take care. I hear that traffic and crossing the streets in Tblisi is hazardous to pedestrians! Peace to you.

I do a LOT of dyeing of my thrifted clothes (I buy for quality materials and ignore the colors) but very little of other types of alterations lately. I was impressed by the button switch making such a big difference! I have added length to pants with contrasting fabric before but the crochet idea makes them very unique.
