PS5 or a TPE class 802, it’s a no brainier. This hobby ceased to be aimed at the youngsters long ago. It’s a niche past time aimed squarely at people with money. If they had any real ideas the IET would be offered as as a no frills / low spec version in its railroad range , but that kind of thinking is a bit beyond them. Not at Volkswagen where they cater for all price points over a range of brands , so you buy a cheap Seat , VWAG still gets the money , or a Lamborghini VWAG still gets the money.They’ll latch on one day.

Some great announcements as ever and the improved quality and commitment to a more strategic approach is paying off, but… why are you playing games with smaller competitors and retailers? It’s very poor optics. It’s a wide market and a variety / plurality of manufacturers is vital (both to cover smaller interest products you weren’t previously interested in and in case you go down the swanny as looked likely over the last decade!). As someone who (re-)entered the hobby at the beginning of the pandemic, and wants to support a variety of companies, this is quite off putting.

They cut down the profit margin of big sellers like Hatton's and wouldn't supply them with enough of the product, so Hatton's cracked the shits! Fair enough to Hatton's who have, in my experience, been great to deal with at all levels. Also the Genesis Coaches were first mooted at by Hatton's some years ago. Hornby may have finally reached the 21st Century when it comes to detail and authenticity, but they still produce toys like the Railroad range, where a diesel is struggling to pull three Mk2 coaches up a 1 in 50 grade!

A great range this year. Really well done!😊 As a predominantly steam fan highlights for me include: - More in the Dublo range. - A much needed retooling of the Black 5s. - A re-release of the blue coronation coaches with lights - thanks! (Any chance of releasing some crimson lake ones too Simon?). The LNER coronation coaches sound like they'll be good too. Hopefully these will go with the silver-grey livery A4s and silver-grey rebuilt Hush Hush. - The smoke looks intriguing and I like that lights are being added to some steam locos. - It's also good to see some DCC ready releases of early BR diesels as I want to add a few diesels on my mostly steam layout. Personally I'm happy with railroad quality detail/prices for my diesels, but want them to be DCC capable for lights and sound. SUGGESTIONS: - Some crimson lake livery versions of the LMS coronation coaches. - Some re-tooled era 3/4/5 black Esso/BP, etc tanker wagons. 3 packs for rakes would be nice. - Some brake vans with a rear light (like the old Hornby LMS one, but with more realisitc modern tooling). Perhaps some brake coaches with rear lights too? - Some re-tooled Merchant Navy/Battle of Britain class (the rebuilt BR version without the spam can casing) with firebox glow/lights. Perhaps a smoke version too. And/Or a Dublo version. SOME CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: - Re: your Titfield Thunderbolt release in direct competition to Rapido. Was this necessary? It doesn't sound like you have the rights from the studio either. I suspect you may be receiving some wholey unnecessary and avoidable legal issues as a result. It's not the first time you've employed this tactic (e.g. large Prairies, 4 wheel coaches, etc). Each time Hornby have copied/matched an upcoming release from a rival the resulting Hornby models have appeared rushed and poor quality. You are gaining a bad reputation for this. Perhaps a re-think is in order? On a similar note many modellers were left disappointed when they didn't get pre-orders because you didn't supply the expected quota of models to their local model shop. Perhaps this was due to Covid/Brexit supply issues or poor communication, but if so you need to be upfront about this and make sure model shops receive their expected allocation, even if it's delayed. Many modellers suspect this is a deliberate policy by Hornby to try and get them to buy from you direct. This and the above are resulting in some anti-Hornby feeling and it encourages people to switch to your rivals. If this is the case then it's short term thinking. Even in this age of the internet and home delivery Model shops are essential to the hobby and if too many go out of business I suspect it will have an adverse knock-on affect on Hornby too. However I don't want to end on a negative note as there are lots of positives with this years new releases where you appear to getting a lot right, which is great to see.

Surely it would make more sense to make the loco's more affordable to bring more people into the hobby.
@speleokeir3 жыл бұрын
I agree. However I think part of the problem is there are several markets with different needs: 1) Collectors who want a highly detailed model for the display case and as an investment. Robustness and a good mechanism is less important to these guys. 2) Those who want models to run on a layout who need the model to be a good runner and be able to take the odd knock. The second group can be further divided into: a) Those who want detail and features such as diecast, sound, lights, firebox glow, steam, DCC capabilities, etc and are prepared to pay extra for them. b) Those on a tighter budget, typically with an analogue layout who are happy with a robust, reliable model without all the bells and whistles at an affordable price. With this in mind having Dublo for collectors, Main Range models for group A and Railroad for group B makes sense, although there needs to be a reasonable selection for each. Personally I'm a mix of A and B. I got back into the hobby during lockdown and have built a small analogue layout in my spare room to run some trains and try a few things out on. The long term plan is to build a larger DCC layout in my attic (which needs some work to prepare it first). I'm prepared to splash out for the odd high detail flagship model with a nice rake of lit, high detail coaches, but simply can't justify/afford doing this for the whole layout. For my secondary locos and rolling stock, e.g. small tank engines, black goods engines, diesels, wagons and secondary coach rakes, I'm happy with Railroad quality at affordable prices. At the end of the day I only have a certain amount in my budget and since my income hasn't increased Hornby's 20% price hike means I'll simply buy less from them. Or more likely wait until these models hit the secondhand market a few years down the line. Since Hornby don't get any money from second hand sales they're losing out on a large number of sales from people like myself with such high prices. What Hornby (and Bachmann) don't seem to have grasped is that it's better to make a small profit on each individual item but sell to a wide market, rather than a large profit which only a relatively small number of people can afford. Especially since that market is dominated by elderly customers who won't be around in a few years time and they need to attract other generations, both kids and people in the 20s, 30s & 40s, etc. Put it this way, if I have £1000 to spend on my layout I have a choice. 1) Buy two brand new Hornby locos at £240 each and a full set of their high detail LMS or LNER coronation coaches for another £500ish. 2) Buy Railroad or second hand. They might not be quite as nice, but I get far more for my money. The reality is that it's going to be the second option every time. And Hornby aren't going to get much of that £1000.
@BenjyBoo3 жыл бұрын
@@speleokeir Very well put. I have a modern era layout with DC and DCC lines. Over the past 25 years I have bought all my loco's new from Hornby and Bachmann. EMU's, DMU's, Diesel and a couple of Steam, even Thomas the tank brand. I think the most I paid was for the NSE VEP 4 car Hornby DCC Ready with fully functioning lights and interior lights on all cars, it was something like £175 at the most. Just over 10 years ago I used to buy a 3 car EMU/DMU from Bachmann for about £90 brand new in my local model railway shop. Now you can buy the same Class 43 HST bodywork in Network Rail livery identical to the intercity branded ones from years ago priced at £250 just for the motor and dummy car, it is ridiculous. So when people tell me the price increase is because you have interior lights or working led head an tail lights I say that exactly what I bought nearly 10 years ago at a third of the price! It's time one of the model railway youtubers but these older and new loco's side by side and the price tags. Plus the fact they are made in China and the motor is basically a handheld battery fan motor.

How about quality HST 43002 in blue, and an Intercity Swallow as painted in 2021? Also Class 91, 91119 *"Bounds Green"* comes to mind in Intercity. Please, please, *PLEASE!!! Difficult isn't it to maintain being the 'top manufacturer' when you have existing and upcoming competitors making technically better, brand new, up-to-date, quality models as well as better priced for us, the ones buying them. Of course rising to such a challenge is simply impossible. Much easier to run out decades old toolings as top line stuff, snipe models(and film rights) being made by other manufacturers and bugger around with the retailers without whom model trains as a hobby is not accessible Better square up and play nice Hornby if you want us to keep playing with you at all

It's very interesting to hear how the Tri-ang era train catalogues were studied and looked over for hours on end and sure i'm from that generation. Tri-ang era Hornby train sets were amazing. Loco's that had smokers, great performance and speed, robust like tanks. But unfortunately whats offered up these days doesn't impress as it should. And in that I feel lies the problem. To give a solution it's simple. ALL your train sets need to be DCC fitted and not just ready. ALL your train sets need the punch in the guts that a good DCC system can have. By stalling at doing this I'm sorry but your digging your own grave. Hornby you need to get with the times and FAST. Look at your share price, it's in very dangerous territory now.

Nice to see Hornby paying homage to Triang railways and Hornby Dublo. But only doing a limited run just plays straight into the hands of the Ebay mugs. And us mere mortals who don't always have cash at hand to pre-order these sets either go without or have to pay exorbitant inflated Ebay prices. Now come on Hornby think about this issue please!!!

Some great new retooled additions such as the new Hst power cars and finally slam door mk3s. Not quite in the period I need but at least we know others will be in the pipeline for future releases. One drawback, class 50s. It seems to becoming a model hornby couldn't give a hoot about. Who ever come up with the livery on 50 044 should seriously do abit more research totally wrong on more than one aspect. Paying that sort of money then at least the basics such as livery should be spot on. Shame.

You need to develop an independent class 57, there’s been 3 cheapo class 57s with 47 light clusters, it’s really disappointing seeing a nice livery but it just being let down by those inaccurate lights
@pirozcontractor60063 жыл бұрын
What gets me more is that Hornby have put the wrong liveries for their '57's'. A quick search would reveal that the 57/0's (the ones with class 47 clusters) actually carried Freightliner and DRS liveries, NOT the Network Rail, GWR and Pullman liveries that actually adorn the latest class 57/3's. I get that producing a mould for a 57/3 would be expensive but if Hornby were going to reuse the 47 mould to get around this (which is evident here), you'd be inclined to think that they'd done their research about the correct liveries! Bottom line: Hornby's model isn't technically incorrect BUT the liveries used are from the wrong era (so I do agree Hornby either need a 57/3 or they need to use the factually correct liveries instead of mis-matching). *Either way it makes Bachmann's 57's look all the better...*

Why so many such limited runs of 500 and 1000? You admitted in the video that you expect the Dublo and Triang products will be in "high demand", so why only produce as little as 500 pieces? If you know you can sell more, why not make more? They will never even make it to the model shops and as always, sell out on pre-order.

Personally, I am very excited by Hornby's 2022 range! I'm not going to comment on the pricing, other than acknowledge they are realistic in 2022 with all business factors considered. As a New Zealand customer though, I'm less impressed I must pay UKP50 to have the UKP10.99 catalogue shipped to me. I might have to investigate if another solution is open to me. As for the models, Hornby will be receiving a few thousand UKPs from me: * R3908 Class 802/2 TransPennine Express 'Nova 1' (my prayers were answered - thank you Hornby) * R3963 Greater Anglia Class 755/3 (fabulous to see this new modern era addition) * R30226 Stanier 5MT Black 5 'Glasgow Highlander' (very keen on this new tooling as, amazingly, I haven't yet got a Black 5 in my fleet) * R40350 LNER Class 801/2 coach pack * R30219 East Midlands Railway Class 43 HST train pack and associated coaches * R30165 LNER Class 91 Bo-Bo 91101 'Flying Scotsman' and associated coaches Looking forward to these arriving over the coming 12-18 months.

Might I suggest don't buy direct from Hornby? There are plenty of UK stockists that will send it to you in NZ at a more realistic postage price, and minus the 18% VAT. I'm across the Ditch in Australia and having been buying through Hatton's and more recently Cheltenham Model Centre.
@dafyddthomas72993 жыл бұрын
No justification for these prices and they not realistic at all.
