What are your struggles with stuff? Has decluttering changed anything in your life?

I can’t tolerate clutter, it’s to chaotic to my brain! I developed seizures due to Lupus in 2015 and it was wretched. Trying to do things, never knowing when a “shake & no bake” was going to hit! Then in 2019 my big brother took his life, my aunt died in her sleep and my mum died from cancer. Grief on top of inheriting three households through me over the edge! I’m now getting through it all, I’ve never been one to hold on to things like Christmas cards or thank you notes, clothes that don’t fit, etc. It all just goes in the rubbish bin or donation bin. No more depression, no retreating to my library and shutting myself in. It’s fabulous. Everything has a home and we use everything we have.

I am 75 yo, have been retired for 11 years and last Wednesday, for the first time, had company for a birthday breakfast celebration and a game and didn’t have to spend a week cleaning/declutterring for it. My husband used our robot vacuum on Tuesday and washed the floors. He also cleaned his bathroom which company would be using. I prepared a quiche the night fore and baked it Wednesday morning. I spent 30 minutes dusting and setting the table that morning. After they left, I cleaned up and read a book. My kitchen counter has remained clutter free for 3 days which is a record. I plan on keeping it that way! Thank you all so much for your tips and encouragement! I wish you were round 20 years go! Keep up the great work you do!❤

Because of you ladies, I experienced something that’s never happened before. I was going to have a few family members over the day after a wedding. Just as I was going to try to muster up the energy to clean up and prepare for my company, I realized, “Hey, it’s already clean. I don’t need to do anything!” 😂 I then sat down and had a cup of coffee and relaxed with a huge smile on my face. In the past, it would have been a big stress-filled frenzy getting the place ready. Now, company could actually walk in and see a tidy home, and if they wanted to they could open any drawer, cupboard, or closet and they would be tidy too. It’s a strange and wonderful feeling.

You guys have really changed my life in this “season of life”. My brother is staying here recovering from surgery and he just loves my home. I think he used the word “fairytale” 😂. Made me feel so good. I think this decluttering and minimalistic life and made this my favorite home to date. I am 64 and am hoping that this 1200 sf is where I live out the rest of my life ❤❤ Thank you to you all so much!❤❤ (Oh, and don’t think I have fairytale decor (not my style) just the things I love the most, like Dawn said “what is special”)

Regarding sentimental stuff, the mantra "When everything is special then nothing is special" really helped me when sorting 6 big boxes of 40 years of my children's things. It broke my heart, but reducing the special stuff right down means that I can now honour what's left. To younger ones I would say get rid of things before time attaches too much importance to them. It's easy to dispose of, say, baby clothes, while your children are still babies. Much harder when they are older and you are looking back wistfully to a bygone time. Doesn't mean you can't keep things, but be much more discerning.

Robyn, you have talked about the mental health connection in your past videos. And Dana's fans are convinced her method is the best for those of us with ADD. My "why's" are that I want to own my curated collection of my things, I don't want my stuff owning me. And I don't want to burden my only child w/a bunch of stuff when I'm gone. I can't control much on this planet, but I can control my little corner of it! 😊

Dana's no mess declutter saved me! (and my hubby)!! Ty Dana!! I had tried "pulling everything out" and it was out for weeks, part of it for months! 🤪🤪🤪 A little at a time and a small area at a time is so mch better for me.

I grew up in Ohio. It was the norm for people, whether it was relatives or friends or even strangers, to just show up. Didn't bother us at all. My mom always said if they don't like the way the house looks they can leave. I do keep my home prepared for visitors although no one ever comes to see us in TN. lol I miss that. I love watching your videos.🍁🍁🧹

I wish friends would just pop in sometimes. I have a decluttered home. Clutter has always stressed me so I naturally decluttered before it was in vogue.

I have definitely decluttered somethings after taking Dawn's advice and thought they wouldn't be missed, and it was worse than just being missed, I forgot I decluttered them and expected to have my husband wear them. Then we were scrambling for replacements at the last minute. I think Dana's method is amazing!

I still struggle with craft items, but decluttering has really changed our home. There's always something to declutter but I don't feel like I'm drowning in stuff anymore

I live in the south and everyone knows I don’t do drop ins. My house isn’t messy, I just need to prepare myself for visitors. My home is my sanctuary and I prefer a heads up before people drop by ( at least a phone call) I’m retired from dentistry and 35 years of all those personalities wore me out😉

We use the words "drop by" for what you call a "pop in", but they are the same thing. Sometimes, when a neighbor drops by to say hello, I just go out on the front porch and talk there instead of inviting her in. (That can be really tough in the summer in Hot'lanta! I'm much more tidy in the summer!)

Oh no, moving 15 things to get something from the cabinets would kill me. I went so far- custom ordered shallow upper kitchen cabinets, so only one thing could fit there and nothing was lost at the back😁

I have a little hack for keeping sentimental items. The vast majority of my Christmas and Halloween decorations (Easter as well)) ARE sentimental. I do my very best to not keep holiday decor unless it is meaningful to me.
@EsterHorbach-it9tbАй бұрын
I don't 'need' to declutter in a big style, I'm more a minimalist than hoarder. But being a introvert, I definitely need one day in advance call before I feel comfortable having visitors (better make it one week). My mom used to clean all the time. Compared to her I'm a slub. But it's a different life I live, no husband, kids).

I am struggling, really struggling. I watched all of you ladies and learned a lot. I grew up in a house where my mother was a hoarder. I always kept my space in the house neat and tidy. But I lived in a messy house all my life. After I moved out, I have been trying to keep the house tidy and simple. But there are a lot of things that we genuinely need (like pantry, medicine, tools. etc) but I don't have enough storage or a place to put things in. No matter how hard I try, stuff always collects on the counter. I have tried and tried and my house is never pretty. I think I am just a failure in this aspect. I have no aesthetic sense. I love how my friends have beautiful house. My house is clean but not tidy or pretty. Now with a small baby, things have gotten worse with PPD and PPA.I wish someone can come to my house and show me how to do it.
@rachael2323Ай бұрын
You are not a failure! Keep watching these ladies, they will help you shift your mindset and empower you to do what seems like the impossible! I started watching dawn for organizing tips, thinking I could organize clutter, but soon realized I needed a mindset overhaul because I had placed too much value on stuff, not realizing the stuff was blocking my path to peace, self confidence and a peaceful home. Dana’s container concept will help you maximize your space! And Cass will help you give yourself grace. Knowing I am not alone in this struggle was hugely helpful - this is my fave supportive community on you tube - stick around it’s amazing and before you know it you’ll start feeling amazing too!!! I don't know who I followed first, but I follow you 3 plus Cass and Christine. You all seem to have pretty similar values. Some talk about their faith and others don't. I took that for granted until I tried listening to a podcast by someone else. She was trying to find purpose and belonging in all the wrong places. I do still watch videos of others sometimes, but I'm careful with the content I consume. Even if the decluttering and home management information is solid, it doesn't have the effectiveness for me if the heart is missing.

1) My decluttering came from the 'necessity of moving a LOT (in my younger years), bc as I was packing, did I realllly want to spend my work on moving day and also unpacking this? And this? And this?... 2) my clutter threshold has become extremely small over my life, due to growing up with 3 somewhat/almost hoarders (mother, father & 1 of 2 sisters). So it's kinda like I 'git that bug' every time I get depressed in my life (yes, I'm actually Dz with chronic depression and medicated lifelong due to my traumatic childhood, but not due to the hoarding tendencies of the childhood home). But there were a few different times in my life (my last kitty died, so I had an empty nest, I thought I'd take some time to grieve before I get a new kitty, down-spiraled, a bad back injury so I was bedridden for several months, etc) that I down-spiraled into a bad depression and my apartment was one of the FIRST THINGS to go!!!! Each time that I pulled myself out of my depression episodes, and therefore cleaned up the HORRENDOUS MESS!!!! it was like an internal pendulum of a clutter threshold would swing to the opposite direction just a little bit more each time it happened in my life!!!! Now my internal pendulum of the clutter threshold is SOOOOOOO LOW, that it's more like 'absolutely clutter FREE', rather than 'clutter low'!!!! I'm a laid back cricket (Cas Clutterbug) who can't stand much of anything left out visible not in it's home!!! And when I do leave 'to get to' stuff out too long (like a few days, or too much of it) I tend to get into a frenzy of Ruthless Decluttering and even some House Hushing (Dawn minimal mom) to calm my surroundings!!!! Lol But it does make me feel better!!!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂

Ps: my definition of clutter threshold is different than Dana White from a Slob comes clean. Before I even saw her on videos, I knew about my internal pendulum of my own threshold for visual clutter AND ease of putting stuff away. To ME, that's what I think of when I personally define my clutter threshold. Dana has a definition for MANAGING the clutter...my definition is MORE about VISUAL and SEEING my stuff!
