A story to share. Last winter I put a fern in our bathroom (it has a sky light) it in now enormous. Do you know what ferns do, they drop leaves constantly. I began to give up trying to keep up. I saw Dawn in a recent video about keeping the floors clean. This is important. Underneath the hanging fern is a tiered bin with all my ' stuff' covered in leaves and over flowing. I start to look for a bigger cabinet. Then I was like wait this is ridiculous. So I gifted the fern. Then decluttered the tiered bin, guess what nothing left in that now. The floor is clear and the bathroom looks and feels less stressful. It is true, just make the space easier to manage. (It also appears that I have enough scented hand lotions for my entire lifetime).

IF your scented hand lotions are still new and unused this is the perfect season to "gift" some of them and lower your inventory - even if you just gift them to a woman's shelter or nursing home!

I’ve tried so many coffee makers…pour overs, kuerigs, French press you name it. I’ve decide that your run of the mill drip coffee maker (must have program feature) is the way to go. I often get gifted ground coffee, and this way I don’t have to feel overwhelmed by all the different pods etc.

You know you've finally made minimalist status when your husband built you your dream closet but it's SO bare that you end up switching closets with him. He has much more than I do (I haven't won him over yet) and it was just natural to let him have the larger closet. I am so content with the smaller space and still have more than enough room. It baffles him. I have found peace through the process of decluttering. ❤

This reminds me of ten years ago when I was dead set on moving to Japan. Everything is small there and I live in Michigan. I would have to pay to ship everything I wanted to take. A small apartment for Japan is about the size of a bedroom plus a bathroom. I downsized everything I owned into 3 large boxes and one large tote with my clothes and bedding. Plans fell through. Few years later got married, now a family of 6 but I'm still the same mindset and everyone else's clutter drives me nuts because in the one who has to maintain it all lol

OH MY - this happened to me this last weekend, I realized I can move completely out of the dresser drawers that is in our closet because I've paired down using Dawn's onion method that I started August 2023 and every couple of months or end of season I've decluttered, donated, or trashed so much from every room (but especially my closet). This weekend I stood in our "dream closet" also and looked at my spaced out rod and looked at my organization shoe boxes that I've organized my shoes and undergarments on the open shelving, and then realized I could take a pass through t-shirts and pjs and then condense them into a space that would vacate my dresser drawers completely! I still could go through more shoes and t-shirts, but I will pause and be happy and take another layer off when it feels right!

I had that same instant reaction, thinking back to Flylady! That happens a lot when I listen to these decluttering and cleaning videos. Obviously she didn't invent all of her techniques, but I always wonder whether her influence may have directly come down to today's influencers from the millions of people that Flylady impacted. Social media may be terrible in someways but having the collective wisdom around homemaking and life management come down to us today is one of the blessings.

Same here. We all live day to day in our homes and that means messes and un-homed items laying around. It's nice to see a minimalist home during real life. But Dawn points out how it's not so bad that she can't pull it back together quickly. So helpful.

I’ve been watching Dawn’s videos for a year and a half, and I’ve made a lot of progress (onion method style). But recently I was feeling so frustrated that my home could still get so cluttered even after so much decluttering. Thank you so much Dawn for sharing this and pointing out that, yes, things are going to get messy, but it can be pulled back together quickly. There’s seven in our family and we homeschool too. It used to take maybe 45 minutes to pick up one room. Now it’s down to 10 minutes. So great to see that your house gets lived in by kids too (with stray socks), but it’s all about how much time it takes to put it back in order. This is now one of my favorite videos!

All the shoes in the entry way transported me back to my early teens. It was my job to keep the front entry free of shoes. Of course there was no cooperation from my siblings and they consistently left one or more pairs of shoes in front of the front door. In total frustration I tossed every shoe out on the front lawn in a rainstorm. While my parents weren't thrilled with my methods the knowledge I would do it again was enough to get everyone taking their shoes to their bedroom.

I love your tips on how to de clutter, I have lived in my house for just over 50 years, and you can imagine the mammoth task I'm doing at the moment. My mantra to keep me going is, you brought it in, so now you must sort it out! It's unbelievable just what we hoard, thinking I may need that, but no more! I also think about my daughter, who would have the terrible job of sorting after I've gone.

I cannot thank you enough for this video. I saw it 3 a.m. this morning and I was so shocked because I always murmur to myself while watching your videos that you don’t really have a mess. So this video was closer to home for me. It felt real and transparent instead of fake in an already clean home all the time. I appreciate this video even though it still doesn’t mimic how my mother’s house looks but I’m getting there. Especially what you call floaters. So we are educators, craft people and ministers and we can find a reason to keep anything. It’s hard. I have tried to mimic your rules but not fully there yet. Thanks so much and God bless!!!!!!!!💕

That’s the way I think of it. Instead of worrying about giving things to specific people or places I donate it all and just trust that it will find the people who need it. I think it’s good that you’ve pointed this out because so many people get stuck on the thought that they have to donate to the perfect place. People find what they need in all sorts of places.

I don't make piles, I use the container concept. I have one laundry basket that sits at the door of the room I am doing, anything that is to go in other rooms goes in that. Once full or heavy enough I stop clean/tidying and go on a delivery run. This has stopped me getting distracted leaving the room to see other thing to do. Not able to do anything else while doing deliveries because I don't let go of the basket (major rule don'tlet go of the basket😊).

I have always loved your laundry solution and organization. As my youngest (sons) are older and on the verge of moving out I was thinking of how I could help them manage their clothing and laundry. So I got a bunch of similar baskets, labeled them in categories (T-shirts, underwear, socks...), including "Dirty Laundry". Because the basket is small they won't ever have a mountain of laundry to discourage them from doing it. The interesting side to this, is that the day I finally put everything in place, my youngest who had been having a rough time emotionally had come home and announced that he was going to move out that night (His sister was looking for a roommate). As a family we sat down and had a talk. At some point my husband told him to go look under his bed. When he saw the baskets he burst into tears. I hugged him and it helped break some of the current anger he was feeling. He was much more receptive to hear us after that. I suggested he wait the two weeks till moving day (In Quebec, July 1 is the traditional moving day when most leases end) and then if he still wanted to move out, we would help him move. Who knew such a simple thing would cause this kind of reaction? Thank you, Dawn! By the way, my son is doing quite well and has begun making decisions that will be of great benefit for his life, and is more receptive to hanging out with his biggest champion; his brother who missed him a lot.

Just a suggestion, IF YOU HAVE THE BANDWIDTH, NEW items, like that pink gear bag would be BE VERY WELCOME at a Domestic Violence Shelter!! I stayed at one on two separate occasions, many years ago. Many women have to escape with only the clothes on their backs. Any bins, bags, organizational items, kitchen items , kid's books, or women's clothes you donate there would be very helpful for women who are trying to get their lives together. You might call around to find out the location of the closest/neediest shelter. It is very stressful to have to start over, completely, especially when you have a small child, like I did!! It IS more of a hassle than just dropping things off at Goodwill, but the blessings you provide are exponentially increased. ❤❤❤❤

I love seeing your videos! Always good advice and ideas! Something I do when overwhelmed, and limited on time is start with the largest thing in the room. So If it is the kitchen, I move all the counter stuff to the table, clean my whole counter and then tackle the table top. The bedroom , make the bed. I really like carrying a basket room to room with a trash bag and disinfectant spray. The basket serves to collect the unwanted stuff. Another thing that is most helpful is getting everything off the floors and out of the corners like boxes and bags of misplaced stuff. I used to have a house where I went room to room collecting all the extra stuff and moving to the next, til I'd end up with all the messy stuff in one room, laundry, toys, everything to be sorted the next day. Then I would follow thru with vacuum and wiping the surfaces. I think it all depends on your energy and time in any case, changing up how you proceed can be less boring. Sometimes concentrating on one area is better. Another thing I try to do is eliminate catchalls. I often tell people to eliminate the extra shelves and unnecessary bits of furniture in each room . Some people will add more furniture to keep their extra junk instead of getting rid of it. Eliminating containers little by little also helps.

How about two baskets that are the woven white plastic ones on top of the bathroom dresser- one for the hand towels and one for wash cloths and then it frees up a drawer in the vanity. I store my washcloths flat in a container on the ledge of my garden tub that has the shower right next to it. Love your practical content

Totally agree with you Dawn, my home is so simplified and when any of the 5 grandchildren have been, I'm sure you can imagine with them being 10 and under well it's so simple to pull it back round or even if I've been in a fibromyalgia flare sometimes over a week I can sort it easily. Not cleaning atm Dawn, evening here in the UK so tucked up in bed but I still love your videos. ❤

It is so nice to see real life. I have watched your other videos before and I felt that I couldn’t get that perfect clean house. I have a really sick child and there are medical supplies that accumulate and seem to take over my house and I can’t do much about those. But decluttering 5he rest of my house helped me a lot to keep above waters. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Dawn, Thank you as always for the motivation! I’m getting ready to do part 3 (!!!) of a desk declutter! I moved things out of the upper cabinets down to the desk area (which was already cluttered) when I was decluttering those. I decluttered a lot of papers from the desk in round 2, but still have things (colored pencils, graph paper notebooks, markers - I design graphs for counted cross stitch) for which to find a better home. But sorting “like with like” is a principle that has helped so much in this process. Thanks for that! (as well as “just 5 minutes!” and the “time will tell” bin! Those have been so helpful to me! I also wanted to say that I’m so happy to hear that Adeline likes to cross stitch! It is such a relaxing pastime (to people who enjoy it - I’m guessing it would drive you bananas!). Please tell her - from me - that she should try designing her own graphs sometime (if she hasn’t already). I suspect she has inherited some of your artistic talent, and I’ll bet it would be fun for her. My Mom taught me to cross stitch on a stamped pattern when I was about 8yrs old. In 1978, when I had a one yr old who was going to a Mothers Day Out program, I dropped into a craft shop and saw a cross stitch design done on Aida cloth - - no stamped pattern!! I was fascinated! They were advertising a class that would be held during that time. I signed up and that class was the most exciting thing I ever did for myself! I have loved that art ever since! It still excites me just to think about that class, and what it has meant to me. I’m afraid not many young girls are learning needle arts anymore, so I am very happy learn that she has!

Big warning on the Nespresso......I have gone thru 2! The pumps die and you send it in for warranty and never get it back. They have to be cleaned constantly. I decluttered mine and went back to a go ole standard coffee maker(I grind my own beans) and I am much happier! Lesson learned:)

I love that! “Life is too short to take care of stuff that isn’t adding value to our life” before finishing this video I had a conversation with my 12 year old son. He was asking me when we would be able to get out, to go hiking, exploring, camping more etc.. (he’s waaay more about experiences than things so he’s been pushing me to declutter more and faster lol) I’ve been on your channel since August of 2020. My goal was to be clutter free in 23 (like your January video stated) I don’t feel like I’m fully there yet (mostly because the onion keeps revealing more layers 😆) but I’m working harder than ever the last few weeks. 😅 thank you soo much for your videos and encouragement! I’m loading my van up today and taking a load out of my house. Yay! About a year ago my husband came on board and my 12, 13 and four year olds did as well. (Still working on my twins. They are about to be 10) but I’m giving them space and time because I know they will come around. I’m just focusing on how far we’ve come and being extremely grateful that I can finally walk into my garage and have the kitchen cleaned up for the night without mental breakdowns at 2am. We’ve all grown so much in our decluttering muscles thanks to you. Blessings to you and your family! You are truly changing lives, families and the world! One video at a time! 🤗

Thanks for showing that even if you have decluttered to your “clutter threshold”, things can still get out of control from time to time…..especially when there are others in the household. BUT, the key is that there is a place for things that do need to be kept….and it is fairly easy to tidy it up! YOU’RE BEING REAL! 😃

I had just gotten done telling my daughter on our way home from school how I never thought listening to a stranger on the internet tell me to get rid of my stuff would be soothing. Then you sighed and said this was going to be a boring video. LOL! I appreciate that you record what seems to be mundane, boring activities like decluttering something you already decluttered. That consistency is what keeps your home functioning how you like it. You remind me of my little sister when we were young. She was uber skinny and would start running around the house when she would gain a pound. Back then, we thought she was crazy, but as soon as she stopped focusing on one pound at a time, the other pounds crept in. You're teaching us decluttering a decluttered space helps keep the clutter away. I hope YOU never get bored with posting videos! I appreciate your reminders and sincerity. Merry Christmas!

I have a full length standing mirror in our bedroom that I hung one of those metal hair tool organizers onto and now I can easily style my hair and put the tools back into the hanging organizer right after. Highly recommend getting one of those so the style tools don’t lay around and you can put them away while still hot. it helps to not keep it in the bathroom too so the family can use the bathrooms while I’m blow drying and straightening and I don’t have to worry about hair frizzing up again.

So much of my clutter is gifts I never used. One of my relatives just buys too many gifts (at the risk of sounding ungrateful) and I end up feeling guilty when I get rid of those items. The veggie chopper was an item she gave me last year. I can see how that might help a person who cooks a lot for a large family... for myself (living alone) it was just something else to store and never feel inclined to use. The hassle of cleaning it was more than I want to deal with. Thanks for this very motivating video. 💕
@Smithpolly
@Smithpolly 10 ай бұрын
I read something in Kurashi at Home that was helpful about this. Instead of looking at the gift as a source of stress and annoyance , look at it is as an opportunity to try something new. Don't leave the gift sitting unopened in a drawer but start using it straight away. You might find that some things surprise you and you really enjoy using them. On the other hand, you might find that you learn vegetable choppers are not for you and when you give it away, you're giving someone else the opportunity to find out if vegetable choppers are for them

We have a rule that you can't "declutter" someone else's belongings. They have to learn to manage their own stuff. That helps build trust that no one is throwing away your items without your knowledge and consent.

Hey Dawn😊I love decluttering and cleaning with you! I also love changing the seasonal decor with throw pillows, but we have a 1952 cape cod (small) home with no basement or attic. One way I can change my decor is to only buy one set of pillow inserts with allergen covers and three to four sets (for each season) of seasonal pillow covers/throw blankets. This way, at the end of the season I take off one set of covers, wash in delicate cycle with Woolite and they are all stored in one small bin in the off seasons in the closet under the stairs. I hope this could help others with similar space issues.
