My strategy evolved from high premium American Gold Eagles and Buffaloes to low premium best value sovereigns, francs, Coronas and ducats but majority sovereigns all thanks to you my Brother in frugality. Cheers 🥃

Are the ones stacked up .999 or better? I like them but I cant buy anything less than .999 for tax reason. If they are what are they called. Sovereign okay. i wonder if Canada has any
@SovereignSaurus
@SovereignSaurus Жыл бұрын
Sovs are not 999 unfortunately. The older ones do look more gold though that doesn't help their tax status in some countries.

Really nice stack. I'm a US citizen, but I do enjoy buying some of your sovereigns and some 1/4 oz queens beasts gold... everyone says I should only buy US or Canadian coins, as they are my area.... but that's boring! And who knows where I or my heirs will be living in the future...
@SovereignSaurus

Yeah perhaps good to have a base of 'local' coins if they're treated more favourable but I'm sure many stackers can attest to keeping some nice coins that you like if premiums are reasonable

My strategy was simple it was no taxes when buying or selling , very liquid , low premium . So that means no bars, no foreign PMz and gold. I have a mix of 1 Oz, 1/4oz ( sovereign )size for flexibility . Initially I had silver as it could be bought from the EU without vat and premiums were low. I also have some nice foreign coins but that's my collection and not my stack .

Great video. I started a year ago with 5 Sovs from RM (have learnt that lesson early on). Wasn’t sure what to go after and was a bit haphazard. Bought some ounces, some 1/4oz but settled on Sovs after about 6 months or so. Present collection is mainly special years but once the overload of celebration Sovs are out the way after the coronation, I’ll start picking up best value and concentrate on the lower premium items. Except for 2002’s - I’ll always make room for more of those 😂

Great choices. It's certainly been busy for sovereign collectors. I believe we will get a bullion version of the crowned KCIII and then perhaps there would be a 'normal' 2023 sov unless that would cover both of those bases

Hi Saurus - many thanks for this and all of your insightful videos! My buying strategy is based on specialisation - buying only what I really have researched in depth. Having no problems keeping my hands off my savings I have further set up some limitations for my purchases to keep me from getting carried away 🙂 My coin dealer calls me whenever he has Krugerrands from the 90's (those are scarce) or Victoria shield sovereigns. No sites presenting fake sovereigns have shown (full!) shield sovereigns as examples of counterfeits - and maybe due to the many details in the shield design those were/are considered to difficult and time consuming to forge.
@SovereignSaurus
@SovereignSaurus Жыл бұрын
It's certainly a good trait to only buy what you know. I have seen what look like cheap (low premium) coins like francs and others but would rather pay a little bit more for a sovereign that I'm very familiar with
@properjob2311
@properjob2311 Жыл бұрын
have you ever experienced buying fake sovereigns? I have been just buying new Britannias but recently got my first sovereign, however I am reluctant to buy gold on ebay because of risk involved with postage and fakes etc.
@SovereignSaurus
@SovereignSaurus Жыл бұрын
Yeah there are definitely some listings to be wary of on there unfortunately they seem to do little to police the sale of counterfeits there. I've not personally bought a fake that I thought was genuine but I've seen a range of fakes from visiting coin dealers and shops. The best fakes were 21ct rather than 22ct and I am glad to say I picked them all out and spotted the single genuine one among them. At first glance they were passable. I've mentioned in a few videos some ways of checking coins but if on eBay look for established sellers with sales of similar items (some dealers operate on eBay and you might be able to benefit from time to time eBay offers there too)

Hi mate. Can you give details of the Australian sovereign approx @ 6:46 ? Is it a proof coin worth grading? (I have the normal version)
@SovereignSaurus
@SovereignSaurus Жыл бұрын
It seems to be a proof coin yes although they don't seem to be that popular. It's made to look like the original Sydney sovereigns on what would be the St George side (reverse) from the 1800s which command very high premiums in nice grades.

I keep mine in Safe deposit boxes as I don't want to leave it at home. In the ideal world yes it would be nice to keep it out at home on display or where you can instantly access it but for me I feel it's safer in a 3rd party vault.

It depends but initially the most important thing is to stick to reputable dealers in my opinion. Once you're confident in basic testing and spotting counterfeits and you could maybe venture into the 2nd hand market places.

Have you dipped into the semi numismatic world? When the bullion high dissipates, one tends to look for the next high. Maybe it is wise to reduce quantity a little for quality. I have a few grimey sovs and would like to clean up my stack a bit.
@SovereignSaurus
@SovereignSaurus Жыл бұрын
I can definitely see how that becomes a thing. I'd like a nice example of the pre Victoria sovs, I figure a George III would be a good start and something like an 1817 will surely captivate many collectors being a significant year. I am still just stacking quantity though picking and choosing better dates or conditions where I can

@@SovereignSaurus I wanted a "wow" coin for my sov stack and so bought an 1821 sov. But I ended up paying over a grand for it - I could almost have bought 3 sovs for the price of that one. It is not even in really great condition either. These coin auctions like The Coin Cabinet and Baldwins have great historic coins, but the buyers are crazy on these online auctions right now. Everything is shifting for silly prices. Personally, I buy gold as a ready and liquid source of wealth - this objective is more easily realised with low cost bullion around or just over spot. Flogging an 1817 sov is going to be much harder and would take longer than the usual bullion. You're also going to get shafted on the price if you need a quick sale for ready cash.However, I do like to admire and enjoy quality craftsmanship though, so the higher end market has a definite appeal (as a hobby). I would like to get the Petitioner Crown 2 oz gold set if I could. It is absolutely gorgeous, but nearly 12 grand is extremely hard to hide from the missus 😆

Congratulations on your fine stack, sir. I'm new and focused on getting my precious metals at a low premium but here in America the most popular options, American Eagle and Gold Buffalo, are above 5% premium. Fractions are much higher. I'm now saving for Austrian 100 Coronas which I can typically obtain at 2.7% premium. I suggest you periodically compare the premium differential between the purchase price and sales. Another suggestion is to keep some bullion for quick easy sale in the event of an emergency. For that, I keep 3 months' living expenses equivalent in the form of old circulated silver coins which are quite popular here and hold their value very well. Good day!
@SovereignSaurus
@SovereignSaurus Жыл бұрын
Some good tips. Whilst I don't keep my metals at home I have a list of what I would sell first if I needed to pull in an amount of money quickly. The premiums on the US coins certainly sound high which if dealers give you 2 or 3% over spot when you sell might be fine but if they're not paying more than Britannias or other coins it doesn't seem worth it from that angle alone
@MrDavidknigge
@MrDavidknigge Жыл бұрын
@@SovereignSaurus They pay more for American, but not enough to make up the initial cost of a Brittania. Even if they pay only spot on the Corona, I'm money ahead and with the lower acquisition cost I can buy more weight.
