Revealing My Top 6 EDC Knife Steels-Which Will Be the BEST?! I test a lot of knives on the channel and I get to see what I like and don't like. With the blade steels keep getting better and better this list is constantly changing however there are a few that have been on this list for a long time. What are your top 3 favorite knife steels to use? Of course these aren't the only steels I like but for now these are my favorites.

I'm not a steel junky I just like knives so 14C28N and 154CM are my favorite because they are affordable and stainless. I got 20Cv, M390, M398, and S90V knives but I dont really see the extra value. When you got hundreds of knives your never going to need a super steel because you carry a different knife everyday.

14C28N is no joke…it is razor sharp and stay razor sharp a long time…I consider it a super steel in real life. Cold Steel used to make some alien sharp knives with this steel too…even though they were thick behind the edge….they were extremely sharp knives….

Howdy….after suffering injuries to my right eye and left hand before I retired from the service…I cannot even strop a knife anymore…I have one the the PM2’s in big brown bear steel…but want to get it alien sharp….do you have any recommendations?….I don’t want anyone to butcher it….its pretty sharp now but as you pointed out it has belt chatter and could be much better….I just cannot correct it today…First world problem but I would like to make it as close to perfect for myself and my next of kin when my time is up. Thank you. And excellent videos. Keep up the great work young man.

If I could only choose one steel, it would probably be S35VN, because it’s so well balanced. It’s tougher than M390, has good edge retention and it’s not too bad to sharpen. I haven’t tried any Magnacut yet tho.

3 favorites: K390, 14C28N, Magnacut K390 is the best balanced high-alloy tool steel, and the only one which can be had for "working knife" prices in the Seki knives. 14C28N among the very toughest steels, only slightly beat (at each given hardness) by 3V and AEB-L. And can be had in $50 knives. MagnaCut is in line with high alloy tool steels (falling between M4 and Cru-Wear), but highly corrosion resistant. I will say, I've fallen out of love with most of the high edge retention, low toughness steels. Maxamet, 15V, ZDP-189, S90V, M390, 20CV. I'd rather strop daily, than reprofile an edge chip ever again.

I love cruwear. More than enough edge retention, easy to resharpen, and even though it isn't stainless, it resists corrosion a good deal better than stuff like M4 or Rex 45. I have cruwear on a Boker Mono I carry.

My main small edc folder was the lil native in cuwear. Even with large hands, that little knife was pretty amazing.. that cruwear never stained on me, and it held an edge really well. I recently started carrying the deka in magnacut because its much easier to operate one handed, especiwlly for dudes with larger hands.

1. K390 2. 15v 3. Spy27 4. LC200N 5. Magnacut The order of the rankings is a little bet tilted to "Time" in pocket. SPY27 surprised me, I love the ease of stropping right back to shaving sharp. Runners up M4, Maxamet, ZDP189 and 154CM. 20CV is good and they get the heat treatment spot on more often then M390. Great Video!

I think I'm also looking forward to seeing more Magnacut out there because of the excellent balance of toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. My Benchmade mini-Adamas in CruWear has really impressed me too. I love the edge CruWear takes and at that high RC it stays sharp for a long time. I could definitely see 15V being my go to if I was cutting copious amounts of abrasive stuff and didn't want to touch up very often. I also really think CPM 3V is the best go to for a fixed blade, that toughness is great. I have a White River Ursus 45 in 3V and black burlap micarta that I just love to use.

I’m pretty in line with your choices. I’d probably go K390 just for pure performance, Cruwear for pretty care free use due to its toughness and pretty decent corrosion resistance, and my 3rd would be M4 which k390 knocked down quite a few notches. That said, in time Magnacut might replace cruwear since it has the properties of a tool steel but is pretty much carefree in use which a little less toughness. Also having used the 15v manix for a couple months now, k390 might have a challenger. I picked up a 15v PM2 a couple weeks ago and I’m with you in that it’s the current best available platform for the steel, so that will be the real test against k390. Tool steels are just exceptional when it comes to performance and sharpening, plus I love the look of a well used blade with a heavy patina.

I think K390 (Spyderco, seki city models) and BGM knive’s magna-cut are my two favorite steels right now. BBB 15V is right behind, as well but I have not used it enough. LC200N isn’t bad either, but it doesn’t hold onto front end sharpness enough for me.

I know this video is from a bit ago, but thought I’d still drop a comment. I’ve been liking that 15V, got the Manix 2 and Para 2, had the chance to get the Shaman from my local shop, but I’d bought too many knives recently and figured I already have a shaman and that wasn’t the best platform for that steel and I didn’t need it just to have one lol. Sharpening these steels is when you appreciate them. Maxamet is funny because you can flash a light on the edge and it’ll reflect back like it’s dulled but it’ll just slice and slice. It’s truly a carbide impregnated material.

Old Benchmades in 154cm like the 707 and the 710, Spydiechef in LC200N, and Liong Mah KUF 3.0 in Elmax. I find them all easy to sharpen, and they all hold a more than reasonable edge. My favorite pocket knife is the Native 5. I have one in Rex45 with micarta scales that I carried for 6 months cutting against metal, scraping gaskets, you name it and I just strop it back. Another Native 5 with the side plates and burple g10 in S110V. Really great steel but it will chip against steel. I love the knife because it is a tank. I have a Native 5 with G10 scales in Cruwear, it starts nice and sharp but does not retain an edge for long. 3 or 4 days and it is toast, does not strop back. I gave my son the Rex45 Native 5 lightweight. He really likes it. I do not like the lightweight. I gave my son the Manix in BBB S15V. He has carried that for the last 6 months. I sharpened it once for him. He cuts everything with it. I have a Hogue in Magnacut with aluminum scales. Nice knife, cuts fairly well and strops back fairly well. Not nearly as sharp or as durable as the Rex45 or the S110V. Would love to try K390 but the blade shapes and lack of any but lightweight handles make it not for me. There are now aluminum scales out for the Lightweight Native 5 so I want to get one in Magnacut.

I've been using my pm2 in 15v since I got it. I got mine from WMK on a pre order when they first started dropping. I've broken done so many boxes with it that I've lost count and it's still sharp. I can't shave hair with it but the edge looks just like it did on day one. I keep hoping it gets dull enough to justify sharping but it keeps cutting right through the boxes week after week month after month. I'm about to break and sharpen it anyway, at this rate I'll be waiting years.

I'd replace Cruwear and 3V with 4V and put s90v on the list somewhere, but it's still a great list. ASP60 is great too. I've only used it from Maxace so I can't truly call it a favorite yet, but I own 3 of the KW2's in ASP60 and they're all basically unstoppable. Like Maxamet, but with better feedback while sharpening. My 15v Manix came from the factory with a trash edge so I sharpened it immediately, but I've been using the factory edge on my 15v Shaman daily for like 5 weeks now and it'll still scrape shave arm hairs. Edit: I guess I'm only really thinking of the true super steels. Steels like RWL34 and AEB-L would definitely have a place on my list of overall favorite steels.

D2 is the best EDC steel for me. I have a big collection of EDC blades, s30v, s35vn, m390, s90v and others. And I do use my blades a lot, because I run a flower shop with my wife. And by now my favourite EDC blade is one of my cheapest, the Petrified Fish pf818 in D2 (a very effective design)... Why D2 ? Because it's cheap, holds an edge really well and it's easy to fix. And I'm not afraid to lose it or brake it. To me the EDC knife culture went in two different groups. First group are knives that are meant to be actually used every day. And the second group is the expensive jewellery fancy steel knives that people are afraid to use, and have them just as quality machined mechanism, more like a toy. I never saw hard working men (construction or other job) using a 200$+ knife... And if you look at knives under 70$ (a working knife should not cost more) D2 is king in that range.

Like them all but its about application. I have Maximet and 15v and k390 but I don't think I've used them enough to understand how good they are even though their phenomenal. Out of what I've used extensively 110v and m390 and ZDP 189. I don't abuse 110v but I love that it holds an edge forever and a super stainless. M 390 again no super hard use but it's a excellent steel too. ZDP 189 I think is just underrated the hardness holds an edge super super well and finally M4 . The last two are just any task blade and do a great job holding up to extended use on cardboard. The hold good edges and sharpen up easy enough to the edge holding ratio.

I enjoy putting an edge on knives, so AEB-L has always been a dream for me.. especially living in the sierra nevadas and being a river rat. Magnacut has really grown on me, considering its like AEB-L in many respects. Id like to see 15v on a fixed blade with a ≈.2" spine and a high convex grind go through a torture test. Im honestly curious how much abuse these high alloy steels can handle at a high hardness and loaded to the gills with carbides.

Ive had 8cr13mov, d2, 20cv, and spy27. So far my favorite has been 20cv. My favorite pocket knife ive iwned so far has been a kershaw link 20cv. Kershaw has been my favorite pocket knife brand. I had a spyderco manix 2 lightweight i got a good deal on but it was very hard to sharpen and never stayed sharp or got as sharp as my kershaw link in 20cv. Kershaw is my favorite so far. I want to get a spyderco endura in k390 and a kershaw launch 7 in cpm 154 plus more in my collection of knives. I never owned a benchmade but do want to get a osbourne in s35vn.

Buy the AEB-L Mule, put a 12 degree edge on it and enjoy.. Triple B worked with the heat treat on it ans its amazing stuff.. 3v is ones of my favs..strops back forever and can take a beating.. Also aus10a is becoming one of my favourite budget steels. I have 15v, magnacut, rex 45, s110v, k390, m390 and AEB-L blows me away.

I like good steel but I could care less about the steel hype. As long as it’s from a quality knife I’m happy. As far as a couple of my favorites I’m gtg with my cruwear and 20cv. I want a pt+ but I’m not paying more for it than my regular sng just because it’s magnacut.

Just ordered the Chris Reeves subenza 31 it said it was in s45vn but came in MagnaCut I’m guessing it’s a better steel but don’t have much experience with the MagnaCut . I guess my question is did I get a better value by receiving MagnaCut vs s45vn ? I figured I’d ask before I called bkadeHQ

M4 is definitely high in my top 5 I carry my BM 560 every other day I picked up a manix 2 in 15v and it’s def top 1 I have a PM2 in S45VN which is also pretty good much better on retention then S30V I had a maxamet pm3 that I sold and I’m waiting delivery of a new pm3 in S110V we’ll see how it compares I’d have to say my top 5 is 1:M4 because it’s a beast of a steel then 2:15V then 3:S90V because the insane edge retention on those 2 then the S45VN it holds up a while and sharpens back up fairly easily and then 1095 for me hard use war fighter strength

If your main goal or preference is to have the most “slicey” blade (higher hrc/better edge retention), sure, steels like 10V, 15V, Rex 121/76/45, m390/398, 20CV, & Maxamet are great. Btw, Maxamet outperforms 15V by quite a bit in that category. However, aside from that ONE aspect, there are steels that can give you good enough edge retention, great toughness, and a choice between corrosion resistance or ease of sharpening. Which imho, is what most people should seek from a knife steel. Steels like AEB-L, Nitro V, 14C28N, and CPM-154 are plentiful, phenomenal at covering all your bases, including price! However, if you want to spend a little more money and still cover 2-3 categories (toughness, ease of sharpening, corrosion resistance, & edge retention), these would be MY top 6. 1. MagnaCut: (literally covers all 4 categories and can be tailored to your preference between 60 HRC and 66 HRC. Between 60 HRC and 66 HRC, you can have more toughness or edge retention, while keeping similar corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening. I believe Larrin Thomas is working on new composition’s of MagnaCut, which will keep the steel relevant in the future. 2. LC200N: Similar toughness to 3V (slightly lower), 100% corrosion resistance, and is easier to sharpen due to its lower but optimum, 60 HRC. 3. CPM 3V: One of the absolute toughest steels, isn’t too hard to sharpen, has ok edge retention, and won’t corrode if you keep it clean. 4. CPM CruWear: Really tough and really good edge retention. Mediocre at sharpening and needs TLC (like 3V) if not coated. Can steel corrode with negligence. 5. Tungsten Carbide: Best Edge retention on the market and can’t corrode. Although difficult to dull, if it does, you need a mystical diamond machine to sharpen it. And can be brittle depending on circumstance. 6. Vanax: basically LC200N with less toughness but more edge retention. Similar in corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening.

I still love VG10, 154CM (though CPM154 is better), Elmax, S30V, 14C28N, hell I even dig AT-55 and BG-42. Yeah, I'm old lol 56100, O-1, 1095 some of my favorites for larger fixed blades, I am okay with 1095 for folders too especially traditional. I even dig Buck's 420HC, as long as you understand what its limits are it's sometimes a good choice. 20CV/M390 is nice, still deciding about Magnacut just not enough time with it yet, soft spot for S35VN/SPY 27, don't mind S45VN either honestly. Having fun with M4, still trying to decide if it's practical for me or not. Honestly I don't demand the latest and greatest, as long as the price is fair and the steel is appropriate for the intended use it's fine, it can be an oldie but a goodie. Edit: Oh and Cruwear I forgot Cruwear. Starting to like this one.

spyderco vg10 is excellent for light duty tasks, especially the delica with its .09 blade stock, keeps a fine edge with mainly letters and opening bags of chips. i work in a warehouse cutting mostly 1inch waffle board and finally had to sharpen my cold steel ak47 in cts-xhp. was it past its ideal point? sure but it still got the job done and because i was still new at sharpening and cts-xhp was not fun to sharpen in those days. even tho i didnt do the year test with my spderco endella in 20cv, kizer beglighter in 20cv, or giant mouse ace iona in m390, i still put it as my number 1
