Obviously remakes are usually not as good as the original in most circumstances but I feel like they gave us more story about Eric and I loved that. The original movie has been one of my most favorite movies growing up and that is one of the things that attracted me to your channel. I gotta say I love this movie just as much.

Just came back from seeing the movie, and I loved it. At the end, the people in the theater broke out in applause. I have to say that i think that I might like it more than the original. Unlike the original, I like that her decision to become human was more than just love at first sight - Eric was part of the reason, but not the whole reason. Also, they took the time to establish a connection between Ariel and Eric - we can understand why they fell for each other. (They are kindred spirits.) PS I loved Scuttle's rap.

I'm not big on animated films so therefore I never saw the original Mermaid and also not being jaded in obsessing over the pros and cons in comparison as with so many reviews. However, WOW...I thought this live-action Mermaid was absolutely spectacular especially in the 3D screening. The performances, songs, orchestration, VFX/CGI production design and cinematic shot-for-shot storytelling was brilliant. And most of all bravo to Rob Marshall's creative directorial expertise...plan to see it again.

Finally! I found my tribe. Lol I don't know anyone else that had never seen the original. I started to watch it before this one and decided to go in with unbiased eyes since everyone else was comparing it to the original. I agree with you. This film was really good and I think this version and this Ariel will be just as iconic for this generation as the animated one was for the previous one.

Hi! So I’ve seen this confusion and complaint in a couple of reviews and I thought I’d add my two cents about it: I thought the whole Coral Moon thing was supposed to be an occasion for Triton to have a bit of a United Nations type meeting with his daughters. This is because they are not only supposed to theoretically represent the Seven Seas (I believe the directors said something to that effect about the original), since they’re gathering together I took that to mean they each rule one of the Seven Seas and are checking in to discuss what’s going on in their respective areas of responsibility. Since Triton is the king of the whole ocean but can’t be everywhere at once, it makes sense he’d have his daughters take over responsibility of different parts. I think the reason he’s so upset with Ariel missing it is because as the youngest but at a decent age to be learning these duties, she is likely the one primed to take over this particular part of Atlantica’s vast ocean kingdom. All the others are spoken for. He’s probably upset because it’s her first time being allowed to be part of this meeting. Or maybe I’m reading too much into it. Wouldn’t be the first time! 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, I didn’t hate the Scuttlebutt song-I thought it was an interesting way to disseminate information that we haven’t seen before and it was a nice use of Awkwafina’s rap talents (she started out as a comedic rapper! A nice callback for sure) and Daveed Diggs added to it, like Sebastian is loosening up just a tad for once. Also, I know it was mentioned in the song, but scuttlebutt is a real naval term that means gossip/watercooler talk. As someone with some experience there, I liked the Easter egg ☺️ In terms of Vanessa and that whole fight, I liked the live action not using all the ocean creatures to sabotage her and all that. It would’ve pulled focus, like if they had decided to do “Les Poissons” after all with the realistic fish 🫣😬 Thank goodness they didn’t! Stuff like that wasn’t needed in order to get the point across and move the plot along.

They still should have put that infon inside the movie, as it stands it looks like a family dinner nor is ever stated ariel is neglecting duties, besides this atlantida looks painfully empthy, we dont see any merfolf until the end of the movie, to the point I was conviced maybe they had removed it and now the only mermaids were triton's family, their thrones are also just rocks? Overall the artistic direction is sort of lacking, then again, it might be to difficult to cgi a kingdom

@@jayla3282 I did say it might be me jumping to conclusions, but you’re right. No indication of any of that in the film. And yes, Atlantica was woefully bare in this version-I don’t even think anyone called it Atlantica at all in the entire movie! That’s also worth unpacking. I think it’s just a different setting for this version and cutting certain things made more sense for the world they were trying to build and the story they were trying to tell.

I watched it earlier today on a whim as a little treat for myself. I liked it more than I thought I would and definitely got more emotional than I thought I would watching it. (I cried twice in the movie, once in the beginning and at the end.) The nostalgia was there for me during the whole movie. I appreciated the iconic imagery they made sure to incorporate into the movie. Watching it and seeing a moment that i remember seeing as a cartoon come to life just made my inner child so giddy. I also appreciate that they kept the original score for certain scenes as well. Halle’s voice gave me goosebumps. (I’m glad I’m not the only one who was creeped out by her finger thing on the rock though.) I agree with what someone else commented about the Coral Moon being like a counsel meeting of sorts. It’s how King Triton can rule the ocean without being all over the place. I thought he kind of glossed over the concept in the beginning but I could be wrong. As for the body language line, I can see why they might have cut it. The whole line was like “you’ve got your looks, your pretty face, and don’t underestimate the power of the body language” which is a line that probably hasn’t aged well. Ursula is essentially telling Ariel to use her physical appearance to make Eric fall in love with her. Which is something I can see many people complain about. It’s like the argument people have with the cartoon film of Ariel giving up her voice for a man which surprisingly is addressed in this remake. Lastly, I don’t think daddy was used simply because most teenagers don’t call their parents mommy and daddy anymore. It’s typically just mom and dad. I wanna say that usually the words mother and father are used when kids are upset with their parents and don’t agree with them which is Ariel.

Literally just left the theater. I loved it. It wasn’t perfect and there were moments where I was disappointed. But overall it was great. I even cried and no Disney live action movie has done that to me until now! If I were to change just 1 thing to the movie without changing a lot of what they did it would be to alter the opening. The opening of the film had me VERY scared because of how serious in tone it was. I think they should have kept the concert and the song “Daughters of Triton” and then let it segue into Ariel like it does in the original. The film felt like it didn’t really “start” until Part of your world and I think its because the lack of singing messed with the pacing at the beginning.

As someome who's childhood favourite was the little mermaid and still is one of my favourite disney movies i was a little apprehensive at 1st when this was announced. Yes theres song changes, added songs and change of lyrics. I still really enjoyed the new soundtrac and i can't wait to see it tomorrow. I still love the original, but i treat these live actions as a completely new movie and disconnect them from their animated counter parts so it doesn't ruin my original love for the movie.

For sure! I love the original and the live action is a completely new movie. I can compartmentalize it, but its impossible for people not to draw comparisons as its similar stories, titles, characters, songs, etc. I enjoyed both!

I just came home from the premiere here in Finland and Yes, it was better than I expected : My biggest fear was Flotsam & Jetsam, they were so good even without speaking but like you said, I wished also that they would talk and lure Ariel in for Ursula. My biggest disappointment was the beginning, because when that little fish escapes from those fishermen and started to swim to the bottom of the ocean in the original, it was MY SCENE when I was a little!! They should have put that in this movie!! And don't get me started about the Mer people Kingdom!!!! So disappointed!! Ursula was definetely the best part for me , I love villains so... Halle did fantastic job and her voice is so angelic. 3/5 from me.

I absolutely loved it. Definitely agree that it wasn’t perfect but for me, it is absolutely the best of the live action fairy tales. Saw it last night in a packed theater in Los Angeles. The audience clapped after part of your world and again at the end of the film. Such a great experience!

Melissa killed it as Ursula. My sister and I looked at each other like omg. Scuttle was hilarious too. When Eric was done sing I said immediately no. It made the moment so over dramatic. I know what you mean about the finger things. I thought since she is kind of pull her weight outta the water to see him. Maybe that's what that was. That world note tho. I teared up. We also talked about the daddy thing and I think maybe it was taken out because of how the word is used now.

I think it would have made sense for Awkwafina to rap rather than sing a calypso type song. She’s definitely not known for singing 😂 & I found it used as comedic relief. I guess EVERYTHING she did was used as comedic relief lol. I honestly loved the new added songs, especially the one when she just got legs, & the part of your world reprise. I like that they had Eric talk to Ariel more. They’re love story will always be kinda silly to me because they knew each other for less than 3 days before falling in love lol & Vanessa was SOOO GOOD!! I feel Melissa’s singing was not where I wanted it to be for Poor Unfortunate Souls, but she was a good Ursula. I agree Flotsom & Jetsom needed dialogue! I also agree about Ariel on the rock during the reprise 😂😂 I was like is this The Conjuring? 😂 Disney needs more stories for characters of color, instead of reimagining the same characters they have as different races. It’s over and done with so 🤷🏾‍♀️ Ariel is one of my fav princesses so having a brown Ariel is beautiful, and I will always be a Brandy Cinderella stan! But let’s have new stories!!! This also relates to the diversity within the sisters. I thought it was BEAUTIFUL. I believes all shows/TV should just be diverse no matter what. But just to appease this generation and liberal thinkers, Disney removes logic and has Triton have daughters with Southeast Asian, African, and European features but they all have the same mother…I realize they are mythical/fantastical creatures so maybe logic doesn’t apply. But cmon 😂

I saw the movie today and I loved it. I was three years old when I saw the 1989 version in theaters (my first theater experience) and I got so emotional today-especially seeing Jodi’s cameo! I’m still processing some things and considering my overall ranking among the live action remake films, but I think it’s in the top three for me (I do not put Alice or Maleficent in this category because they are not really remakes 🤷🏻‍♀️). I’d give TLM 4/5 seashells. Halle was just incredible and I had all the faith in the world in her after hearing her sing Part Of Your World in the movie trailer/clips. Javier was also amazing and I had zero doubts about him. The sidekicks and Melissa also impressed me when my expectations were low. I feel like most of the things that bugged me were the same things that you mentioned: *Missing one-liners that brought so much charm to the animated version (like why remove the line about Ursula’s little poopsies??). *Not having the eels talk, but the other animal sidekicks did. *The Poor Unfortunate Souls not being Poor Unfortunate Souls.. *Not calling Triton Daddy. That bothered me so much. 😂 I’m sorry but Javier is very much a Daddy. As someone who grew up with Eric setting the standard for my taste in men, who is now much too old for this new Eric..Javier was Daddy. 😏 *I could have done without the Scuttle rap. Although, Scuttle was HILARIOUS. *The ending felt rushed and I was bummed we didn’t see her come out of the water in a sparkly dress. If Triton can give her legs, he can give her a frickin’ dress. 🙄 *I wanted more background on the sisters. *I also wanted a sea creature chorus for Under The Sea. It was really just Sebastian with Ariel backing him up.

4.5 out of 5! I like that they didn’t replicate some of those missing moments since it can feel forced and instead they injected “new moments.” That is the issue with other live action remakes, somewhat cringey and forced. I do wish they did the sparkling dress when she gets legs though… for my love of fashion 😢

I agree with all the scary parts ... i think if i were a kid watching those scenes it will scare me a lot lol and the * but dad ilovehin i kinda ok without it so it will not be emphasize more that she exchange her voice for a boy that she only met once .. but it helps us think that what she really obsessed with was the world above the sea. Not just eric ... he was only part of it... the one that triggers her to do that is that king triton destoyed everything she loves and collects, her grotto (im a collector also thats why i feel her lol) and yes the body language quote kinda sad about it too.. i love the vanessa part she nailed all her scenes... i wish theres a lot of merfolk scenes but yeah it is what it is.... i also love the under the sea part watched it on imax so it helps me appreciate it more . king triton made me missed my dad. (Now in heqven) I cried a lot ... Im sorry that u didnt apreciate the rap part a twist that everybody must have seen lol Halle bailey is so perfect for her role. I think it takes me a bit to separate from what I expected to appreciate it as a new version. So far I have liked all the remakes. To me prince Erick's song was unnecessary hahaha it also felt like unplanned, scenario wise. It was just him moving around a hill i guess? they could have played with birds flying over him or i don't know interesting visual things. Also, Ariel's hands on the rock movement, i agree it was a little awkward but to be honest it was the director's job to figure out how to make that work better. I don't know how nobody on that set said "we need to try this in a couple different ways". Overall I enjoyed the movie but i went there without expectations, to be able to enjoy it without asking too much of it. It was actually way funnier than i expected it to be, i laughed plenty of times during the whole thing. The film isn't perfect but is enjoyable, i think families and children will enjoy it, as most live actions i guess.

I just saw the movie and loved it! This was not meant to be a beat for beat remake of the original and I think that was the best way to go. I thought it had such a beautiful, uplifting message and that every single character contributed something necessary for the whole to work. The creature designs were fine. After a few minutes in, it became less and less about what they looked like and much, much more about what they meant to Ariel. The rap song Scuttlebut worked just fine in context and fit Scuttle's character and added a bit of fun before a dark moment.

I don't remember who said it, but they talked about how you suspend reality with animation and things that aren't possible with live actors are completely natural in animation. I don't plan on seeing this in the theater, not sure I'll watch it on D+ either simply because I'm tired of them doing these.

I think you’re spot on with your comments. I did enjoy the movie, but a lot of elements were much scarier because of their realism. Case in point- the shark scene. I would have lost it as a kid!

I was thinking the same about the sisters… In the original movie they barely had a roll. Yet the amount of all of the photos and merchandise is crazy! I almost think that Disney is laying down the groundwork for multiple movies. And the sisters are going to be a part of it. Way too much effort into minuscule roles.

You bring up some good points. Honestly what did it for me is the fact that they wanted to use the actress natural hair and dreadlocks but to me they could have atleast either dyed her hair a more vibrant auburn to compensate or super imposed it more. I know a lot of it came down to race why people were so upset about the film. I loved seeing the TikTok about the lil girls crying over it saying that she looks like me. Disney's decision was not wrong there chosing her. I really don't have an issue with the animated animals looking realisticly. Flounder is actually modeled after an angelfish which have translucent scales. Also he would have been freaky as real flounder has eyes on one side of flat face. Also have to remember its a family film geared towards young children. Same as before with the animated film. Disney has to keep up so adding a new song and a rap which kids are enjoying now doesn't seem too bad. When doing any kind of reboot or remake there is going to be things others don't enjoy or comparison to the original. It doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the overall film. It'll be the first film I'm taking my disabled sister to see during a special needs showing and i can't wait to see it. I am trying not to spoil it by seeing it beforehand on Disney+ but I am excited for it. Despite popular opinion. I have always related to Ariel in the fact that daddy tho was always doing things out of controlling and thinking he was protecting her. Then like any teenager who was sheltered would do and rebel is relatable because I was raised by my dad after divorce and I don't always agree with his rules even now as an adult he still does them.

I thought the movie was not going to be good because of everything I was hearing about it. However, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. I would give it a 4 out of 5 seashells 😊 And although I was disappointed when I saw that the new Ariel did not look like the Ariel I had grown up with, I think Halley Bailey did a really good job and her voice is amazing! I was clapping in the movie theater thoroughly embarrassing my kids.

Im gay and i fell in love with her more than i did eric!! Her and Lily (LA cindy) i feel really embodied their roles, and its also nice to love a princess again since its been so long. I’m exited for this personally! All the things I heard on the soundtrack is good to me. We will need to see how well the visuals and the story context Match up with the new songs for me, but though they don’t sound like Disney CLASIC songs, there kinda brawdway style And sometimes that’s what I want in a MUSICAL movie XD. Alan Mankens score seems to be Updated just enough from what he did in the original to make it feel more Grand. And Hallie I can already tell us a star! Can’t wait!

Fellow Little Mermaid obsessed fan here! I just finished watching the movie. I overall loved it! I actually liked Aquafina playing scuttle. I loved Ariel so much and Ursula was alazing. Even though I didn't like their looks I liked Sébastien, Scuttle and Flounder. I admit I missed the chef and chasing Sebastian scene. I liked Eric and the added scene in the castle with Ariel. I think Disney did a good job on Flounder- at least as making a realistic looking fish. I realized over half way through the movie everytime he was facing the camera I subconsciously imagined holding him in my hand and removing a fishhook from his mouth as if I had just caught him on my hook. I had to clamp my hand over my mouth to stifle the snicker that came out when I realized that and instantly thought “it’s me, I, I’m the problem, it’s me”- cause you know humans are dangerous barbarians 😂 I learned my lesson in judging an actor before seeing the movie WAY back when Heath Ledger was cast for The Dark Knight, so you’re not alone in that aspect. The hand thing on the rock creeped me out as well. I LOVED the Paua Shell armor. It was so cool

I loved loved loved it! I went to the fan event at El Capitan in Hollywood and the energy in there was so good and made watching the movie even better! 🐚🐚🐚🐚 Just watched it yesterday.. It was 4/5 for me! But I totally agree about your comment on Under The Sea part!!! I thought the same, I needed all the creatures to sing and dance together from the beginning of the song. I thought Vanessa was greatly evil, she looked scary haha. Melissa as Ursula... im sorry but she didnt look evil enough for me compared to animation Ursula. Ursula has biggg lips and big eyes so didnt feel like Melissa was the right fit, personally. And I wish Ariel's hair was "redder"!!! It was just brown, but what special about Ariel is her stunning red hair. I know they tried to make it more realistic but could have been more red than that, still in natural way. (Halle's sister was doing tv interview and her hair was even more red than Halle who plays Ariel!!! And it was gorgeous) Also, I thought the same about Ariel grabbing rock, scene!!! It was scary for me too like "Watch and you'll see..." and her face that time looks like she is gonna kill Eric or something 😅😂

I give it 4.5 shells I love the original and I just feel like the remake just missed something I can't tell what it lacked but there was just something that wasn't quite as magical as the cartoon. It was a beautifully done film and I loved it but it feel a little too scary at times which I didn't like. I loved Erics song and that we got to learn more about him. Overall I love both the cartoon and the remake just for different reasons. I agree the scuttle rap song was a little confusing haha.

I loved the rap song but it was an odd transition into the song. I loved it though. I loved that they made Ariel a bit more sensible. As a child, I adored the little mermaid, but as an adult, I look back at Ariel and think she’s kind of a spoiled brat, being only 16 and running off to be with a man she doesn’t even know. This movie like you said, they were kindred spirits, and it was less about wanting to be with a boy then it was giving humans a chance, there was more character building and storytelling into their love story to make it more believable. This Ariel had her head on straight and is a good influence to little girls. This Ariel put her values first and her family first even (such as when she went to save her dad and she knew Eric was okay but could use help). I think this Ariel will stand the test of time and continue to be a good influence for a little girls for years to come. I really wish daddy didn’t have the body armor on though, but that’s just a sidenote 😂 Sebastian, flounder and scuttle all grew on me and I found them adorable by the end. ❤️ I believe they do explain why the sisters are gathering at the beginning. If I’m remembering correctly, it’s to report how each sea, that they are responsible for, is doing. Each sister was to report to daddy. It’s literally just one sentence of the movie so it’s easy to overlook but I’m pretty sure that’s what they were meeting for. I will be seeing this movie again in theater!!

Huge Disney fan & I have no plans to see this in theaters. I'll maybe watch this on Disney+. I'm tired of the live action remakes, I want more animation 2D/3D and new stories. The only live action I can say I completely enjoyed is the Alice in Wonderland one. I am very excited to see Elemental next month though. That looks very cool!

I went to the movie last night and after watching your review I was a little nervous about some of the aspects. However I enjoyed it for the most part the new songs were okay I didn't mind the rap song. I didn't feel like it was misplaced the one song I didn't really understand but I liked was the second one Ariel did. Beautiful lyrics catchy be odd placement in my opinion. But I'm glad I saw it overall it could have been worse. Beauty and the Beast was definitely worse than this one. And the only other thing I want to say is that I found Sebastian to be annoying he was way too over-the-top for me.

I thought the movie was great. I saw the original movie in the theater nine times and the VHS more times than I can count. I thought that the changes only enhanced the storyline. And they did tell you why the sisters were meeting. They were to give an assessment about the oceans they governed. The spell changes made sense and make Ursula even more deceptive. The ending was perfect. I mean, she is the hero and it is her journey. The scene with Max and Ariel in the early part of the movie was very emotional. Her compassion right there is enough to make you fall in love with Ariel. As for the way the mermaids move, I don't know about you but their entire body not moving through the water would look weird and stiff. Disjointed even. I studied dance for years so that would not have worked. They are in a fluid environment and should emulate that with full body motion. Also, the poor unfortunate souls were all dead. There were merfolk skeletons and skulls all over Ursula's lair. Those creatures with the big eye were more like guardians for intruders.

I've always been a huge Little Mermaid fan myself! I have to disagree with you on king Triton you should 100% see pictures of my dad omg our whole family has always laughed about how much he looks like him! I'm not saying there was anything wrong with who they picked but he is no king Triton. I think he looks like a older Aguaman. I don't like how much they changed the songs and lines. This is my opinion but why can't they either leave Disney alone, or actually do it right? I'm sorry but the animated Ariel will always be the one and only Little Mermaid for me. The only reason I wanted to go see this was to see her sisters, because that was the only new idea I liked. Well now that I know they aren't so much in the movie that is a drag.

Hello, I would probably give it a 3 seashell. I like it and there was some parts I really loved but I think I just really was expecting it to show all parts but just to give it full real life I also didn’t like it, but would watch it again. Some sad things things for me was one I took my youngest and she wanted to leave within 20 min of it starting because it was too scary, but did stay. A second one was I was kind of like and was trying waiting certain parts/lines that didn’t happen. I also was confused with the rap and Jamaican dance during market, probably more just because I’m soo partial to the original, they really shortened the wedding part with max and Sebastian and when triton makes her human again. With what made happy or liked, I loved Jenny as Ursula, I thought Halle did amazing with the singing and matching, so did Sebastian, and I also thought the blue lagoon was still pretty magical for me

I loved this review! I'm terrible, there's been leaks on the internet whether stolen or just me seeing every clip out there I have basically seen the entire film. I agree I put all that ugliness of those types of complainers out of my sight & mind, it's just so unnecessary, it's a film, with actors move on people. Anyways from what I saw of Sebastian and Flounder I agree they could have kept them realistic but theres some pretty and cute fish if you watch the Discovery channel, LOL Flounder was adorable and this little dude should be something of that kind. I for one adore and admire Melissa McCarthy so I knew her versatility & knew she would not take on a role she could not accommodate the character without great representation. Yes, I like Lin, everything he touches is gold but he sprinkles his stuff all over it, so that actually has me worried (I have not seen the film in it's full format) because I have seen Hamilton & he is so involved with Disney now and how can we not forget Encanto! I just list The Little Mermaid as a good solid classic and I knew there would be changes just based on the transition from animation to real life action. Big Disney/Pixar household family that we are and my daughter does not like the idea of this film she says "no thank you, too realistic", LOL! Halle does look gorgeous and so talented and Disney is going to make big money off of this, they are a talented bunch. I do wonder of they will really incorporate it into the theme parks as a permanent or addition to what we already have, again they will need to be careful, we don't want to scare the little ones after all. In one of the theaters there was a bunch of kids cheering for Ariel and totally involved in the story. Go see it yourself if you're concerned. There was an interview with Halle Bailey in England conducted by two little girls who also just loved the movie.

I was super disappointed with the ending.I so wish they left it like the original even with the part where King Tritan gives her legs and she appears with that beautiful sparkly dress and their kiss transitioning to their wedding. I also don’t like that the wedding scene with Vanessa wasn’t on the boat and like in the movie. The original was just so beautiful and magical. The new parts they added or changed didn’t make the movie better in my opinion. It didn’t add anything special or memorable. As for the new song Halle sings the music is pretty much from the song from beauty and the beast where Belle is walking around town. Just different lyrics. I also miss the chef and Sebastian sequence. It wasn’t in the movie and for me it was one of my favorite parts from the original. I don’t know, I just felt like this movie lacked the magic and beauty of the original.

The Little Mermaid is my fav childhood Disney movie. There were a couple things I liked better in this version but also a lot of things I didn’t like. That said I thought Halle did incredible as Ariel. She was stunning and sounded just like the og. The biggest surprise was Ursula. I had my doubts but I thought Melissa killed it. Some acting from others felt flat in some places and the cgi wasn’t the best and looked real fake some times. Under The Sea was underwhelming and there were a couple changes here and there throughout the film I didn’t really like. But also there were changes that I loved. The scenes where Ariel and Eric go on their own adventure was fun. I loved every minute of it. Vanessa was awesome. I thought the actress did amazing even if it was brief. It wasn’t the best or my fav Disney live action adaption but it also wasn’t the worst. I give it 🐚🐚🐚
