Thank you very much! Definitely a good starting point to restore some great features and such a shame they were hidden away. Any reasons for doing so seem to have been over shadowed by the subsequent worse issues caused with damp being trapped in the flues so in hindsight it wasn’t worth doing anyway! The 70’s has a lot to answer for!

Great video and nice to see that you are discovering the past that has been hidden for so long. We have just had an exciting day removing the gas fire from our 1870's Welsh mining cottage to fit a wood burning stove. To our surprise there was a large arched fireplace behind the panelling that had been bricked up and our wood burner will look even better inside it. These old houses can be full of surprises and character. It is great to restore and turn back time in these old homes.

Thanks Pete! It’s always nice to discover the old features but they usually cone with a list of new issues to resolve! The more recent ‘updates’ on this house, done in the 70’s, have not stood the test of time at all and unfortunately some of the features and character have been butchered or lost entirely. I will properly restore what I can. Good luck with yours!

Another interesting video thanks for sharing. I’ve done a similar project at my house. Stripped all plasterboard out, lath & plaster ceilings had cracks all over. Basically the house is stripped back fully to brick. I’d be interested to know how you’re looking to insulate the property and whether you think vapour barriers should be installed. I’ve seen so many conflicting opinions on various KZbin channels regarding the matter. Fry’s my brain! All the best with your house
@therestorationstation5475
@therestorationstation5475 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much. Same issue here - The lath and plaster ceilings are definitely showing the ravages of time and cracked and sagging in places. The fact they have been chopped into, patched with gypsum and not maintained properly means realistically they are knackered and probably have to come down to start again. Therefore, I am contemplating whether to redo as it is, or perhaps vault the ceilings to create a sense of more space. As for the walls, mine is similarly (almost) fully stripped back to bare brick now. I will most likely be using an insulated lime plaster on the inside of the external walls, and a simple lime plaster on the internal walls. There might be an argument for using gypsum plaster on any partition walls but I am wary of how the two plasters interact at joints so might just take a view of doing it all in lime). Since a dry house is a warm(er) house, I’ll be doing everything possible to ensure the walls are returned to a breathable state. Given that it’s a full restoration / renovation, I’ll be installing underfloor heating in a new insulated limecrete floor, fitting new replica double glazed units etc etc so once everything is sorted I don’t feel that additional internal or external wall insulation will be required. I’ll not be using any vapour barriers - in fact I’m convinced that the combination of foil backed plasterboard internally (in conjunction with the cement render / pointing externally) caused damp to become trapped in the walls. The only membrane I plan to keep is the tyvek (or equivalent) roofing membrane. In terms of other insulation, I will realistically be using some foiled foam insulation between the rafters and leaving proper ventilation spaces behind and to the eaves

I have just bought my first house (Victorian two up two down) all fireplaces bricked and cemented up (no ventilation). I have opened up the ground floor and there is a single remnant of range there (the rest has been removed). The opening looks as big as yours but i am not sure if there is structural brick above of that was just for the range... not sure if you have any advice?

@@therestorationstation5475 Hi - yeah there is a lintel but this is at the very back of the fireplace. The left hand side sort of curves in towards the room but its not like that on the right. Was worried i remove it and the stack falls!

We’re restoring a Victorian fireplace, sadly loosing original tiles due to poor cement poured all over the top - it requires levelling out, so any intel on concrete and how to excavate would be helpful to then place a level hearth on top. Have revealed original floorboards everywhere in the house which we’re sanding back and very excited about!

I have one of these in my Georgian flat. Do you think it's worth recreating a fire place? With energy bills soaring, etc. The only trouble is, it is my bedroom and the only wall that you can lean a bed on. The other side has a large window and it is probably too cold to take a bed. So confused. Is it expensive to do?

Tbh it’s pretty knackered and it’s sitting on a concrete slab, which has to be removed to expose the original clay floor tiles. I shan’t re-use it since it isn’t an original feature. I tried the reclamation yards but they don’t want it. I literally can’t give it away in marketplace adverts so it has to be skipped. Tragedy really, as I believe it’s teak.
