That's just like what I did with my chimney on our new old house. Except my chimney was in such terrible shape that I could see through it from the side and could just pick bricks right off it. And the internal clay channels had cracked into smaller pieces. I'm looking forward to taking it all the way down to the basement this winter!

With today’s codes they want an air gap between the flue tiles and the brick. That allows too much expansion and contraction, so the flue tiles fail much faster. The chimney you’re working on has the flue tiles against the brick, and the flue tiles didn’t fail, just the mortar that connects the tile joints because of the age. Goes to show you the old timers knew what they were doing. The exterior brick might’ve need to be repointed more often from the expansion and contraction, but I’d rather have to do that instead of replacing the liner.

That part where you were reaching through the hole to take the bricks off of the attic section reminded me of the scene in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, in which he takes the log from the Whos' fireplace after taking everything else, including their last can of Who Hash. You went a step further and took the whole darn chimney!

that was great - I have a chimney in my attic also and I have to remove it - its a really old one like from the 1950s - so it should come out easy. did you put a skyview in your chimney from that hole? that's what I would have done to get some ventilation in there. is that possible if I do this to mine? to get natural light into my attic area, in the event I ever need to access that area again?

My chimney has become obsolete, because I have 96% efficiency furnace and I have a tankless water heater. I wished, I would've got it years ago. Normally, I would be using 15+ CCF and I'm using less than 10 CCF. My chimney is only being used to attach the tankless water heater to in basement.

Thanks for this video! We have a larger fireplace (about 2x the size) in the middle of the house I'd like to remove. Our's goes through the cathedral ceiling directly through the roof which I imagine would make it easier to remove. At the peak is a beam running the length of the cathedral ceiling. However, the non-roof side angles down to our 8ft flat ceiling height so I imagine this is not load bearing which would be my main concern. Are all 'middle of the house' chimney's non-bearing? Thanks for any advice.

That chimney came out easy. I did one a couple years ago and it was built like a tank. I needed a lot bigger demo hammer drill to bust the bricks loose. I also kept running into pockets of dumped mortar and concrete. Oh, another thing, spiders love brick walls, especially Brown Recluse.

First, congratulations on NOT reenacting the story told in "The Bricklayer's Song" (The Corries). I'm sure you can find it on KZbin... Second, it was interesting watching this happen intentionally. Back in 1989, after the Loma Prieta earthquake, our neighbors' chimney just vanished above the roofline. All the bricks had collapsed into the chimney and fallen into the firebox. (In retrospect, I wonder what happened to the flue, but maybe it broke apart and was at the bottom of the pile of bricks.) Third, when you reached the roof and started removing shingles, flashing, etc., I had a gut reaction of, "Oh no, don't do that!" Then I realized that I've watched you repair roof leaks and worse before, and that you've certainly got everything under control.

I have this same situation going on in a 1940s house I am renovating. A couple of contractors acted like this was an impossible feat! (I never hired them.) Looks like a great project for next spring before we do a full gut on the inside. But yes, to clarify for the naysayers…it’s next to impossible to update the floor plan when you have a 4’ x 4’ chimney stack protruding straight through the middle of the floor. It prevents wall relocations and would require the kitchen to continue to be a small 1940s kitchen, which is not ideal today. If you can remove the chimney, you can reconfigure the floor plan however you like.

For a modern fix and flip or full house renovation Its necessary. The old chimney that use to service the old boiler system goes through the middle of the house and takes up a lot of space. It has to be removed. A new furnace needs to go in its place. This chimney goes right down through the kitchen. A huge pantry cabinet will go in its place. This is not a fire place chimney. There are 2 other chimneys that service the fire places. This customer will make close to $600,000 profit on the flip.
