RAY So before we get into it, this is a DIY kit.
GABE It is.
RAY Is Otherwise known as do-it-yourself. So it's kind of exciting, as you said, Christmas here. This is our lens kit. So this the part that brings the light into the tube, right?
GABE Exactly, so this is gonna be the dome. So you wanna, you know, keep this for once you get the roof part of the system secured. The key here, it gets light throughout the day, even on those winter months where the light's not tracking, the sun's not tracking as high. It's gonna be able to reflect that light right in.
RAY This is probably one of the biggest pieces that Solatube is known for. It's their flashing kit. We do have the guarantee. Nice instruction manual. It's for the DIYer that's gonna be installing this, so we have a nice instruction manual here that we can use along with our product guarantee.
GABE Exactly, and all range of talents too. Yeah. Maybe I could even do it.
RAY Okay, but we'll say maybe you can. This is ownership and care and what kind of warranties you have. So it actually comes with a 10-year warranty for the dome and the flashing, okay?
GABE Exactly, exactly, and the flashing made here in America at our manufacturing facility. Great flashing. We actually recently upgraded it, even more, to prevent against any type of rusting and things like that, so that 10-year warranty is gonna hold up to that.
RAY Okay. This is kind of a cool thing. Solar nightlight. That was actually pretty good. I caught that.
GABE Yeah, that was impressive.
RAY Solar nightlight. So let's see how this works. So this is a unit that goes in the tube, so it just has some stickers. Man, we're gonna have to give a discount to whoever's buying this one. RAY So this solar nightlight, as it's Solatube, bringing sunlight in, right? So we're charging this during the day. And then how does it turn on at night?
GABE When it gets dark on the top here, that sensor automatically turns it on, so it just has that soft amount of light.
RAY They're fairly bright this close to it, but I notice in my house it's not, like, overpowering bright; it's just a nice, almost like a full moonlight, which is really nice.
GABE Perfect walking down a hallway or something like that, or not having to flip on the lights for a midnight snack.

Getting one installed in a windowless guest bath this Thursday. Very excited.

We had ours professionally installed for $831 for one tube in the Kitchen. It was the 290 DS. It required a 10 foot section on tubing because of the high pitch of the roof in our single story home. It took 2 professional installers 3 hours (6 Man hours total). The only complaint is that the nightlight inside of the tubing causes the outside dome to glow at night. So far we are happy with the natural light in the Kitchen. We only have to run the LED lights 4 hours a day instead of 16 hours a day. Since the Kitchen is in the middle of the house, before we had to run the LEDs all the time because it was dark during the day. Our house is a 3,200 square foot single story. If there is any recommendations on putting LED lights inside the tubing to run at night. Currently the solar light is just bright enough to be a nightlight for that midnight snack! :-)

Can this work on a block home with a 10" cement roof? Without an attic, I only need several inches of the tubing. Will this allow enough reflection? I don't see a smaller kit for this application.

I’m wondering if they make a cover for this. Like if I use us in the bedroom and I don’t want bright sunlight on me first thing in the morning is there a way to cover the the tube? I have a house that has the first floor room that I get no sunlight in so it’s always dark in here. Probably would need to do like 30 feet of tubing running it through a closet in the room above this one. That would be interesting if you could do like a T on this and run it into two rooms off the same tube.

Long runs can be done from 2nd floor to 1st floor exactly as you stated through a closet. As far as darkening up the light coming through solatube offers a dimmer that is operated with a switch. So the dome snaps into the dome ring, but then please tell me how to remove the dome without cracking it?

This is a great idea because direct solar light is so much more efficient than electric lighting or solar>electric>light conversion which is only in the single digit percentage for efficiency. Theres about 1000 watts of solar light per square meter, which is nearly 10000 watts of electric incandescent lighting. BUT the real gamechangers and selling points would be automatic dimming using lcd polarizers to a maximum light or at least a manual iris, and a fiberoptic redirection to multiple lights. The technology for this existed decades ago and should have been subsidized by government programs and open source R&D. Relying on entrepreneurs only at the last minute because energy costs are soaring has been a huge waste. Materials cost are very low; it shouldn't be this bare bones at this point; and it should uber cheap.

Diogenes Ferreira I had no problem finding the products and pricing. Look on the top left side of the website for what looks like a square shape of multiple horizontal lines. It looks like a small box of lines. The link will drop a menu down and you can go to whatever product your interested in. We happened to be at Habitat and saw a Solatube 290ISn it was an opened box but it said New on it. My husband and I sat down and went through the box piece by piece and checked off all the pieces. The instructions and everything was there so we got it for $115.00 it sells for over $500.00 we can’t wait to install it and bring some much needed light to our living room.
