Chinese GWM have just released their first ever motorcycle and it is a heavyweight tourer to target the Honda Goldwing. It looks pretty awesome but will anyone in the West buy it?

Not really! I remember when the 1975 GL1000 was introduced. Honda had a big market share with many models of different sizes in the US. The honda street bike sales brochure had all the models pictured from top to bottom with the new flagship goldwing at the bottom. Your very wrong in that the bike was very well received! It was its own bike and no threat to anything else. Even had a funky emergency sideways kick start arm. Some say the same B.S. about the Japanese cars as well; Truth is the Japanese cars actually Were garbage before they were refined later and took off when gas prices climbed. @user-yr1gl3vy7p

I am a Harley guy, but it’s common knowledge that the Goldwing is the gold standard of touring bikes. This bike has an uphill battle trying to get anyone who rides a “wing” to even consider it. But I have to admit that I am curious about what this bike sounds like, as a “flat eight” is a pretty uncommon engine configuration.

I did a Google search “gwm sou gl2000” in the first article that came up was by a site called New Atlas. It’s a straightforward review pointing out that while the engine looks impressive it’s low in horsepower with a 6k redline. While I admire Gold Wings the rubber mounted Harleys have a “soul.” I think this GWM bike it’s going to have to be very inexpensive to get people to take a chance on it

For American riders that want a full dress tourer and want a Gold Wing type bike, they are going to buy a Gold Wing. Why? A history of innovation and quality build. There is also a dealer network for maintenance. This new Chinese bike has none of that.

There was once a Cadre of aspiring Electraglide owners who bought Goldwings. Primarily because they were cheaper. History didn't even remotely figure into the equation back then because large bore Japanese bikes were a new idea. One thing is for certain. History has a way of repeating itself.

I purchased my first GWM Pick Up over 10 years ago, I'm on my third vehicle bought brand new at this point from the brand. Unfortunately as some would say the Chinese value for money is unbeatable, we've had to learn that lesson in South Africa it's the reality, as for motorcycles I'm sure they'll commit to the same principles and eventually begin selling them like hot cakes, just as their motor vehicles have in the past it's only a matter of time. I own a Honda VFR800 6th Gen, my dream bike but if opportunity allowed I wouldn't hesitate to purchase one.

You may be surprised to learn how many Chinese parts are actually on your motorcycles and you don't know it. It will be interesting to see the test rides reviews. If they go all in with, dealer support and a financing arm, floor plan support , factory training, robust spare parts and warranty program, custom parts catalog and sold them at a very reasonable price. They could establish themselves here in the US.

Kinda surprised, and disappointed, it isn’t a hybrid like Kawasaki’s Ninja 7 introduced October 6, 2023. Personally, the hybrid has no appeal to me in a smaller bike but in a behemoth touring bike it makes a lot of sense. Aside from a hybrid distinguishing itself in the marketplace, wouldn’t it check a lot of boxes for consumers looking for better fuel economy and performance?

Is there much demand for large long distance touring motorcycles in China? I mean, there are over a billion people in China, and probably several hundred million who might have the income for a luxury toy like this. But as far as I know the big market for the Goldwing has always been in North America. Well, relatively big, it's not like Honda or BMW sells a ton of bikes in this class.

I own an older Goldwing and this S 2000 is a nice looking bike ... or at least someone has taken nice looking photos. Before this company becomes a player in the American market, they will have to prove successful in other markets. I am old enough to remember when Toyotas were disposable cars and today they are an automotive leader. Is there room for another touring motorcycle? Of course there is and maybe this will be it. We'll just have to wait and see.

The American and European markets are tough and hard to win over to my understanding! Therefore, the Chinese will have to absolutely “nail it” with this new product in every faze, which includes quality, reliability, performance, price, comfort and accessibility of service in the fore mentioned markets in order to achieve greatness! That takes years to accomplish. I can see that happening solely in the Asian markets in my opinion. 👍

You have to remember used price is a percentage of New Sale Price. If the Used price is still 40% of New after 6 years, and the Real Goldwing is 50% of new after 6 years, but the GWM is significantly cheaper to start, you're still $$ ahead with the GWM. And GWM cars have market penetration here in Australia. There's an average of over ten GWM Dealerships in every State in Australia, and their Brands include GWM, Haval, Wey and Ora. The Haval is releasing a hybrid to rival the hybrid Rav4 soon. And currently the Haval in better spec is at least 10% cheaper than the Rav4 with more equipment levels, and its stylishness is great. And GWM offer a 7 year unlimited km warranty across the range. I'm not in the market for a Goldwing, but don't kid yourself. If you're planning on only keeping it for the 7 year warranty period, you will be saving thousands. And, apart from boomers, the economy sucks for all of us now. Those Dollars in lieu of a badge are valuable now. It does seem weird they've gone for the Goldwing now. If the Chinese bring out a 500 odd cc lightweight Adventure bike like the CF Moto 450MT, they'll own that market. And it's a lot bigger market than the Goldwing market.

One thing i am is not afraid to do stupid things, i would buy one to see. If no support thats fine i have been building my own cars and bikes my whole life and if it messes up i know with any engine it can be stripped down to its core and parts like different intake to fit a ole Mikuni to the motor can be sand casted out of beer cans and made to run again. Most likely not as good as before but it will run . I never had a bike sit in the garage or behind the house that won't run. It's a engine it needs fuel, air and compression, if it gets all of that it will run, shit i'll put a 4 bbl Holly double pumper on it if i have to. Point is life is to short to be scared to take a chance if you can afford to...if you can't afford to than you don't need to be buying (wasting) your money on a bike no matter what brand it is. Bikes are awesome but not as awesome as your family...afford your family first then if possible think about a bike.

I ride a Cfmotor gt400. Tech wise is good. Quality wise, still have some years lacking behind the tested brands. Support wise poor even from dealer. Off market parts essentially none. Price wise cheaper then tested Brand but you get headaches from problems. There one person from the chat group had brought a brand new bike for 6 months but had 2 months in the workshop. Problems range from stator coil, auxiliary relay, over heating , co2 sensor, Low rpm chocking. These are problems for a brand imported for 3 years into the country. Future wise, better get a bike brand that is around for more then 10 years to prevent heartaches.

The Goldwing is my target ultimate bike and I currently ride a Chinese bike, but I don't know this particular company. You don't have any idea of what the price, performance, or construction quality will be. You cannot possibly make an informed decision based on a picture. What if it only cost half or two thirds the price of a Honda? It may well be carried on Honda or Kawasaki showroom floors as those two companies are huge investors in Chineese manufacturing. That is why most Chinese motorcycles run copies of Kawasaki or Honda engine designs. The world isn't a stagnant marketplace. Even the big 4 Japanese motorcycle manufacturers cannot afford Japanese labor costs. Can you remember when Made in Japan= junk. I can. I can remember when the only "quality items coming out of Japan were cameras and transistor radios. Now, the big four make some of their motorcycles in Thailand and India. Never say never. Never is a long, long time. And there may come a time when the bulk of Japanese motorcycles aren't made in Japan.

For those that can remember this is how the Japanese bikes started, once the quality is good I bet we will see a lot more Chinese bikes

Only difference is, the Japanese didn't drop the bikes after 3 years, they kept a backup where as the Chinese don't have the same attitude to " OLD STUFF". That's where they fall short.

One of the websites said it will make 400hp. As a liter sports bike makes 200hp. Took me a good 5 minutes to stop laughing. My kids thought I was having a breakdown. Imagine this revving to 13,000 to make those kind of horse power figures .

If this company is serious about their bike a long distance trip could and should be the answer. A trip from Sydney to Perth or East Coast to West coast in the US. I’d be interested in seeing all the specs of the bike as well. It might be a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

🤨 HD, BMW, Indian and especially Honda need not give the SOUO an ounce of concern! Decades of experience in the big tourer industry will keep them at the forefront. The Goldwing has one of, if not the best track record for quality, comfort, performance and reliability over the years. The only possible advantage of the SOUO is its lower cost as you explained. But, does the lower price come with a lower overall quality than its competitors? More often than not, you get what you pay for! Or, the price is starting lower in order to test the market. I guess that we will all have to see how the SOUO rolls out whenever that happens! 🤔 🇺🇸 👍

I guess it's something like the Vulcan Vaquero as well. But it's one of those things if you have th money for it, you probably also have the money for a used goldwing or HD too. There would have to be something more to make you want to get into something with no history like this.

@user-bu2en3cl6s Maybe a "Punt" means something different where you are? It simply means a gamble. Therefore, I would take a gamble that the bike is good and purchase one when they come to the UK market. With Honda, it's less of a gamble because established brand, although their Goldwings have lost their look in my opinion, hence I am looking for an alternative to a Goldwing for my comfortable cruiser.

Yeah … seems to be a pretty exact copy of that Yamaha/Star, which name I don’t remember. Not sure if it’s got the same engine. But in any case, Chinese bikes and cars are nothing new at all in the country I grew up in and I don’t have a good experience with them. I know things change, but I’d wait for someone else to buy it first and put a lot of miles on it; and then let’s see.

I have had 90 motorcycles, soon to be 91 and 3 of them were Goldwing's. I have often thought that Honda Motor Company should update the engine to a an 8 cylinder, flat or a slight Vee. This alone would make Folks like me buy another one, right away---IF they would design a 'Cartridge type' air cleaner that didn't take 3 to 4 hours to replace. I picture this CCP Chinese Souo, having GOLDWING stickers on it and being an instant success. Most of we experienced and OLD riders, the ones with the money, are really turned off by sparse Dealer numbers and support, already affecting many Exotic Brands.

Eventually, it seems like the engine becomes too long and 3 and 6 cylinder engines have a balance that 8 cylinder engines do not have. At what point does a motorcycle become too complex and too heavy? Are there even tires that can take the weight of the bike and cargo, or would the GVWR be the bike and 300 pounds, which wouldn’t even carry two adults, let alone cargo?

400 to 450 bhp is comparable? Comparable to what? Have you raided your local vet's supply of Ketamine? A Goldwing has 125bhp! On a more serious note, the acid test will be whether it will go around corners convincingly.
