The ninth kit from Stash Mountain is the 1/12 Astronaut in Space kit, by Revell. It commemorates America’s first spacewalk by astronaut Ed White II, during the Gemini IV mission on June 3rd, 1965. The kit had a couple of issues regarding seam lines and a tricky base, but it was a fun build nonetheless.

This video triggered some fond long lost childhood memories when I built this model about 45 years ago. As a child, I was oblivious to filling seams, painting, and detailing models. But I was happy with my all plastic white astronaut. I just cant remember what happened to it and many other childhood models (probably fell, broke, ended up in landfill).

Hi :-) Thanks for stopping by! This is quite a nice model, especially because the plastic is white so a young model builder wouldn't need paint for it to look awesome :-) I remember my first model was a 32-scale F-4 Phantom, which probably turned out looking way worse than your astronaut, haha! I used a horrible rubber cement which oozed out of the seams and turned brown. Also no paint! Just for fun, I have recently re-built some of my childhood models, except for the F-4. I keep forgetting I have one in my stash, and now have a total of 4 kits of the same aircraft! I'd better build one of them before senility kicks in good and proper! As a teenager I gave all my old models to a younger cousin when I thought I'd outgrown the hobby , but I do wish I held on to them :-)

@@OstrichLongneck How ironic! I also built a 1/32 Phantom, but later in life in my mid-20s. Mine was the Revell F-4E version in green, original tooling, huge gaping seams, protruding panel lines, and cockpit decals. That model I puttied, sanded, and painted in SE Asia camo with weathering, circa 1986. I still have the big Phantom, although it's been packed away for past 20 years or so. The past 35 years, bought a few kits, but haven't built any. However, the urge is returning, especially with modern technology kits and aftermarket such as photoetch and LED lighting. The current version of Revell's 1/32 Phantom is definitely all new version tooling. If I build another 1/32 F-4, would most likely be Tamiya's.

It always makes my day when another Stash Build comes out. Another fine build. It makes me wonder, now Stash Mountain is getting smaller, what does Built Hill look like?

I built this kit (different name) when I was a kid...1967 or so. I did not do a very good job and recently bought this version of the kit to try again with a little more skill under my belt...your video has been very helpful and I will let you know how my second attempt comes out.

That's awesome :-) The only tricky part for me was getting the base to work properly. I'm sure you're going to do a brilliant job of it! Good luck with the build. It would be great to see your final result!

@@OstrichLongneck Update: I received the new kit in the mail a couple days ago and when I opened the box I noticed the instruction sheet was some what yellowed with age...a little closer inspection and I realized that this was not a re-release...but an original with copyright dates of 1968...an ORIGINAL RELEASE! A little sad I opened an actual vintage kit, but super excited to do this kit to the best of my ability now that I have!!

@@mpwhite64usaf That IS awesome! You have a bit of history right there in your hands. I felt the same way about the Apollo moon landing kit. It's going to make the build all the more special! Now you REALLY need to show me a pic when you're done :-)

@@OstrichLongneck I have a 50th Anniversary release of the Apollo 11 landing kit...which I also had when I was a kid...strangely enough, that kit was a free gift when I signed up for a membership to 'The Science Program' book series...the order form for which came in the Astronaut in Space kit!!! Will definitely post pics when I am done...have been watching your video over and over and combing internet pics to find the right paints for the Ed White Space Walk kit. Working on another kit from my childhood now, but looking forward to the Spacewalk and Apollo 11 kits...

@@mpwhite64usaf It's weird how things come full circle sometimes! My first kit as a kid was an F4 Phantom. I remember all the sprues were shiny silver. I've never been able to find the exact kit, though. It sounds like you have a lot of interesting, iconic kits on your build list. Much fun to be had, for sure :-)

Maybe I missed you saying it...but for the straps, you mentioned (I think) metalic blue. Any particular brand or did you mix it your self. You mentioned Tamiya at least once that I heard...if this was a Tamiya paint, please advise their color number. Also, I have never heard of washing the parts in warm soapy water prior to beginning. What is the purpose? I have never watched the parts previously and have not seen any problems.
@OstrichLongneck
@OstrichLongneck 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike :-) I used Tamiya X-13 (Metallic Blue) for the straps. I always wash my models (especially resin ones) because sometimes there is a thin, oily film of releasing agent which some companies use when molding the parts. I wash the parts just to be safe, but am told this is unnecessary with newer models, as they don't use releasing agent on them anymore. I guess I'm just a creature of habit :-)
