I now want to run a Revenant in a manner similar to how Goro Majima is used in the Yakuza games. Just shows up randomly every session or two to fist fight a party member, appearing from increasingly absurd hiding spots or out of increasingly intricate disguises, half the time during an already ongoing encounter.
That’s genuinely a fun idea, especially if you shake up their weapons and they gain abilities as the PC’s level.

The funny thing is, I am soon gonna start a campaign that centers around the players being a group of revenants (not the same stats from the statblock). The entire premise is that they were normal people for the most part but their small village/town got annihilated by a group of high-level murderhobos. Now the players have the task of hunting them down and killing them. The idea is that while the evil party is several levels higher (11 vs the players at lv 3), they are all assholes while the players can actually functionally work together. They will accumulate equipement, plan, and attack the party over and over, with their respawn ability allowing them to throw personal safety away if needed to secure a kill. Also, there will be a great emphasis on playing smart, targeting the enemy's weakpoints and sabotaging them. Stuff like trying to get the paladin to break their oath, stealing the casters' focuses, the rangers' arrows. Learning information about them and utilizing that to strike at their weak points. Or getting one to seperate and then dive that person in full force. Got the idea from a friend and I really want to see if this type of game can work.
@cheeselord36553 ай бұрын

In an old campaign of mine that I DMd, we had a new player who was a bugbear. The party encountered goblins and killed all but one and decided to interogate them for information. After getting this information, the new player (who was very kind) wanted to keep the goblin and treat him like a friend. The rest of the party, afraid this goblin (who was terrified that going back to his boss would be a death sentence) instead vouched to kill him. The bugbear pleaded and the party eventually agreed, saying it was the bugbears responsibility. Eventually, during a combat, the bugbear fell unconscious right before the fight ended. Instead of healing them, the party saw an opportunity and went back to his goblin friend (who had been living with them for weeks), took him down to the sewer, and all took turns ***ending them*** they burned him, flayed him, drowned him, all while the new players bugbear was unconscious. It left a sour taste in my mouth, so I brought that goblin back as a revenant and one by one did to the party what they did to him. Kidnapped the rogue, tied weights to his legs and threw him in the ocean. Kidnapped the barbarian and sent her into a fight pit surrounded by monsters alone. Burned the house of the wizard along with his wife while they slept. Great times.

What I like about the body snatching ability is that it means that a destroyed revanant, or a smart and determined one that knows about that power, could potentially possess any corpse created by whoever they are hunting. Imagine a high level party defeating a boss, only for him to get back up for another round because the revenant that has been hunting them was waiting for that opportunity, attacking while the party is tired and vulnerable from the boss fight.
@benthomason33073 ай бұрын
to offer an explanation for why literally anyone could become a revenant, it's possible that it's not a specific magic per se, but rather their soul, unwilling to leave their body and pass on, remains in the mortal realm, and as such naturally attracts negative energy, eventually to the point that it reanimates them.

Soul Cage requires the target to die, and Revenants specifically CAN'T die, meaning I'm pretty sure they'd be immune.
@EvelynNdenial3 ай бұрын
@@PotatoPatatoVonSpudsworth the wish is needed to force them to pass on but they have no defense against soul trapping effects. and it does die, death doesn't necessarily mean soul destruction, its soul just possesses another body after it dies. lore-wise it'd probably be easier to capture them since they're already being bound to the material. and also it'd make sense a wizard that knew their stuff could whip up a ritual that used a dead body or parts to draw the revenant in like in TES lore drawing a dremora into inhabiting armor with a deadra heart.

Revenants are the perfect way to solve that problem. In my campaign, our Ghostslayer Blood Hunter order has this tradition called a Revenant Pilgrimage, where a hunter has to track down and eliminate a revenant. Because of the way this works, this mission can take months and months, and has a lot of opportunity for really complicated narrative dynamics. A rivalry may develop, or even a sort of friendship, leading to a moral dilemma, because what if the revenant is justified in their quest for revenge? Each pilgrimage can be unique and different and has its own story with the potential to permanently change that Blood Hunter’s perspective on the world. It’s been really fun to explore that and it’s part of the reason why I love revenants
@papierowyszczur92343 ай бұрын
Revenant might also not work directly. Like, as a part of its work towards vengeance, it may as well go to the nearest order of paladins and give the detailed description of their murderer, then go to nearby ancient gold dragon and do the same thing. And instead of one revenant, the killer must now deal with an angry mob of people and not only. Heck, it might even find an adventuring party and ask it for help. I had an idea of side adventure where there's a revenant graveyard keeper that was unjustly burned at stake by a priest of one of the players deities. And the players get thrown into the stand off.

Revenants in our setting are not always born out of a desire for vengeance, but out of duty. The first one was a samurai, who was escorting his lord's son out in the countryside when a coup happened. He ushered the child into a small crevice and blocked it with his body, but his assailants managed to rip his throat open with a spear. Of course, this being a story about a revenant, the samurai refused to stay dead. He fought back, and refused to rest until his charge was brought back to the palace and safely installed as the new daimyo, at which point he kneeled down under a cherry tree and calmly passed away. Likewise, in the Miracle at Bone Pass, based on the seige of Osoveic Fortress, a contingent of guards returned as revenants to repulse a gnoll army, staying undead just long enough for their relief to arrive, at which point every last one of them dropped dead, with their graves already dug.

Here's an idea for a one shot revolving around a Revenant. The party is at this big party or gathering and a Revenant shows up looking for the person who killed them. Now the party isn't able to take out a revenant but luckily they're able to get it outside of the gates, but these gates won't hold forever and when the Revenant gets in they will tear apart every one to find the killer. So it turns into a big who done it to find and take care of the killer first before the Revenant gets in. And to prevent them from just asking who it was have it so the revenant is to blinded by rage or better yet there mouth is stitched shut. I don't know I thought that sounded fun.

I'm not a huge fan of the Revenant's nemesis wallhacks personally, because it means they don't have to wander, roam, and properly hunt for their prey. I like them having a strong inclination of where they *might* be, without them being able to pinpoint their target. Also, I want to run an adventure involving a Revenant which is irreconcilably furious and unable to rest in peace until they butcher their killer, except the "murder" was just an unfortunate accident. The Revenant deserves to rest, and the killer doesn't deserve to be torn apart by a vengeful revenant. There might be a way to appease the revenant's thirst for vengeance without anyone needing to die, but that's the crux of the issue.

Revenants are literally a european medieval thing. they were basically undead Terminators.

To have a Revenant... Just Summon them in Attack Position. They're only Level 4, and have 1800 ATK which is pretty high and- oh, wait... That's Vendreads. I was thinking of Yugioh.

With the ending of the video: I imagine the next video might be about Genies... wich would be really interesting to watch since those guys are in a weird spot in existance since their Elementals who can often vibe with alot of odd creatures (Fiends, Elementals and Celestials in some odd cases). Infortunally their lore in 5e is fucking butchered and you have to go to older editions to learn more about them, their culture (wich includes how each treats their Slaves/Servants and their organization) and the general relationships between the 4 main types.

Also. how does the whole "they know where the person that killed them is" bit work considering disguises? does it work on who killed them, or who they THINK killed them? Imagine them tracking down their target only for it to not be who they thought it was.
