For our last tip in Mixing Month, Pyramind instructor Steve Heithecker explains the theory behind reverb and walks you through parameter settings commonly found on different reverb units.
For more info on our Core Audio Engineer program:
hubs.ly/H02cB7F0
Reverb is another commonly misused effect so we wanted to take the time to go over some of the basics. This tip is great for beginners as well as a good refresher for those of you who have been mixing for awhile already.
Using Reason’s RV7000 MkII, Steve thoroughly explains and demonstrates each setting.
00:01:00 - What is Sound?
00:02:14 - What is Reverb?
00:08:53 - The importance of applying reverb using send & return
00:11:56 - Algorithm (describes the characteristics of the physical space)
00:14:41 - Predelay (the amount of time before the onset of the reverb)
00:16:08 - Decay (time it takes for the reverb to die off)
00:17:47 - Reasons for EQing a reverb
00:20:58 - Diffusion (affects how you hear the reverb reflections)

This was simply amazing. I have never thought about the reverb in these terms and you Sir explained it in ways I never cared to pay attention to. This is a whole new world for me.and I hope that nothing coming out of my humble productions after seeing this will ever be left the same. Thank you!! Absolutely amazing.

Great to come across someone who takes the time to talk about reverb like that. Great job, making the link to what reverb is intended to do to replicate real life soundscape is super useful. Great description of the main parameters. Thanks 🙏🏽

Every time I hear anyone using a reverb plugin, I'm so glad I found FabFilter Pro-R. Once you learn how to use it effectively, everything-and I mean everything-else falls short in some way. They really created the be-all end-all of reverb plugs as far as the sonic and UI elements are concerned.

Great video but what are your thoughts or anyone's thoughts on mono reverb? It allows for more space int he mix especially on things like drums but is it something to consider doing often to the majority of elements in a mix(for the sake of space/clarity)? What things tend to sound better mono vs stereo concerning reverbs?
@els1f

+QuabmasM I noticed a lot of Michael Jackson's vocals on some of the biggest albums had a lot of really amazing mono reverb. It made it seem like his voice was floating on top of the instruments. Pretty great :)

Very good video , thank you for it. How many Reverbs should I have for a Rock proyect, 1 unit for everything or is it good to have 1 per section (drums, guitars, keyboards, vocals and 1 for all together ) ? Everything is possible, but the normal approach, Thanks.

Great video, thanks. I wonder if you could tell me, please, how Reason et al actually analyse and `grab' impulses in such a way as to be usable in devices like the RV7000 MK. 11. I have encountered a unique and interesting corridor (over an eighth of a mile long!) with a lovely reverb. I can make a stereo recording of a snare shot (or whatever) in the space, but how do I actually turn the reflections and characteristics of that recording into something usable in my RV7000 Mk. 11, or any other convolution reverb? Maybe really expensive/exclusive software/hardware needed? (Hope not - I'd love to `grab' that corridor!) Thank you, PC

Question(s): Unless somebody uses headphones or near-field monitors and since every listening room has its own acoustics and therefore its own reverb we actually do percieve the room effects of the recording and the listening room simultaneously. How heavy is (approximately) the impact of the listening room vs the room effects of the recording? Do we have to worry about the listening room acoustics at all? Anything we can do about it? (I personally mix with as little reverb as possible).

I have a question for you as well as situation or problem Since last 15 years I’ve been recording my voice in a small room with a AKG C414 , DBX 1173 mic preamp and used Yamaha SPX90 and a rack delay which I’ve forgotten about it. The results were always outstanding Recently, I’ve changed my equipments as well as the way I mix things Now I’m using a Mac Pro with a Neuman TLM 103 and I use only plugins for fx and the rest , the final mix sounds horrible, not to forget, I record my voice inside a vocal booth , which you cannot hear anything else, the booth is dead Can you please tell me why my voice sound so thin ? Oh yeah I remember the Yamaha SPX90 had an amazing preset for vocals. What do you think where the problem is ?

If you wanted to make all your tracks blend together and sound like they are in the same room, does that mean you'd put reverb on all the tracks?
@camdenstoddard388
@camdenstoddard388 6 жыл бұрын
Typically yes. But, depending on what you are doing of course, you would do this by send/return busses. This would be a great way control direct vs. wet sound and gives a lot more control. You can also do it by insert directly on the track. Again, depends what you are going for.
