Niiiiiiice. Was just listening to the Exodus album on the weekend and that drum sound is do different to before (e.g. 60s rock) and after (80s... umm everything :) ). You nailed that Exodus sound. Pairing that deadened bass drum sound with a bass (for some harmonics) is where the Wailers & their production got really tight & clever. Have to also wonder if Bob & Co. also benefited from the peak analogue gear in mid-70s that they were recording with.

This is an interesting spin on this but to really recreate the sound would’ve been a ludwig supra 400, a pair of zildjian new beats with a small cloth inside in the between the cymbals, a ludwig 22 maple bass drum, and a couple ludwig maple concert toms.

Would love to hear more detail on how and if you EQ or compress each mic on these drum sessions. Great content you all are coming up with. Moving forward, any of the Al Green/Al Jackson Jr (drums) would be interesting to hear about.

That was awesome. I am shocked. All these years and frankly I never knew I was listening to a traditional kit. I always believed it was some other percussion pieces, played mostly with bare hands. Incredible.

Carlton Barrett was a master on sound. On some live performances he also had a shammy cloth between the hi-hat cymbals. But you got it right: blanket or pillow in the bass drum, tape on toms. All gives a dry (or short) but distinctive sound. Nice fills drummie.

The key to Carlie's sound on the snare was tightening both heads. You can't even hear the bass drum! Which is crucial to the one drop sound. If you really want to know how to get the real sound, follow Aston Barrett Jr. Carlie's nephew.
@anthonyj.m.4750 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Would have been nice if they also had a drummer who could actually play reggae music!!

Play the the snare with the other end of the stick...your cross sticks will fatten up. Carlton, and most other reggae drummers do this. And I don't think Carlton ever took the wires off his snare.

No this is their happy try at a recreation I couldnt tell you exactly what they used but I’ll tell you now they might not have even used 2 over heads…. Could’ve been one Overhead mic or a glyn johns technique The way they play is incredibly important as well.
@MrMrbuck2102 жыл бұрын
As someone who’s worked on session tapes from BMW and others from that era, this could not be more incorrect and wrong. The mic-ing is all wrong, Carly never used towels on the toms, he used concert toms mic’d from the bottom/inside. Do those 2 have any background in reggae music, Reverb should take this down. Its that bad and misinformed
@marianocaianoofficial67296 ай бұрын
I'm so sorry to say it but this video of yours is a big hoax: it's absolutely not true that Carlton "Carlie" Barrett, drummer of Bob Marley & The Wailers, put the sponge inside the snare drum! To have that unique and unmistakable sound, Carlton Barrett tuned his snare drum very high, without using a sponge or other stupid things! You've never seen a drummer put such a big sponge in the snare drum! Get busy with other things but don't touch the reggae or the big Carlton Barrett!

Sounds nothing like Carly, not the sound nore technique. In these times Bob's message is also more significant than the sound of his drummer.
@1surfpesca_2 ай бұрын
Lol… I agree completely that Bob Marley’s message is underrated. The wailers music is angelic in my opinion But let’s not forget to give Carly and Family man their credit…. Dude that drum and bass is what makes bobs message that much more appealing… there is not a single backing band that comes close to the pocket those brothers had. The bass lines are some of the most melodic reggae bass lines ever Roots radics, sly and Robbie, they all deserve flowers too but man the Wailers were made legendary not just cuz Bob, Bunny and Peter… Can’t express it enough the Barret Brothers are unique
