London is now just a (admittedly still great fun to visit) museum for its past musical glories, I worked as a guitarist and music teacher there for 7 years, watching the great small venues close, the studios and rehearsal spots disappear, the guitar shops become more and more unaffordable, and the city destroying cultural landmarks like The Astoria for Crossrail development. It's really just a place to go play if your a big touring band and can pack out the a venue like The Roundhouse. There is very little grassroots music scene left, as most creatives, and the venues to support them, have been priced out of the city in the last 15 years. More and more small venues close down because the council is more interested in the noise complaints of new wealthy residents than the importance of fostering a creative community. Such is life in a big city!

Sounds like Seattle, only on a grander scale.
@jeremyserwer25866 жыл бұрын
Yes most big cities seem to be less about up and coming bands and places for local and regional musicians to play and more play grounds for the wealthy stiffs who want a playground for their exclusive income class. I live in SF and almost all the musicians are gone and so few venues are left. The only people playing music here are the weekend warriors. Seattle still has a great music scene and you can make money in the periphery of the city.

Na mate, your right in some regard, but the London music scene exists. Just not in SoHo or any of the places these guys went to. Just make an effort to go to the right areas.

How wrong you are. Yes Denmark Street, Camden, Soho etc - these are all museums to the musical past, and no self respecting musician nowadays really plays there. But times change, tastes change, people move on, and scenes emerge and disappear. There is still an incredibly strong and big grassroots music scene now, just not in those areas.

I remember going into Macari's in the 70's with a friend and we asked about Les Pauls, he said oh no dont talk about horrible Gibsons lol, that's because he didnt have any on sale. I think it was Macari himself. We used to call in a lot for fuzz boxes etc, but loved going into all the guitar shops, great memories. No way could I afford a Les Paul, but I did manage to buy a superb CSL copy for £50 when I told the guy that's all I have he said here it's yours plus hard flight case, what a bargain. It played and sounded beautiful, a big step up from my Watkins Rapier 3 pick-up.

This was ace. Made me nostalgic of living in London as a student in the 90s going to the pubs in Camden like the Hawley Arms or Enterprise, buying albums at Sister Ray you couldn’t find anywhere else or spending countless hours looking in the Shops on Denmark Street dreaming about buying all the guitars and pedals I lusted over. Fantastic trip down memory lane and great to see a lot of these shops are still going 20 years on. Thanks guys.

When I visited 5yrs ago, I had mapped every guitar/music store in London I could find. After lots of walking, turns out google maps was outdated! About 80% were no longer guitar stores, mostly in Central/South London. And most were turned into Pret-a-manger (sigh...)

Aah The Gallery. I went there shopping in 96. Martin was busy luthier'ing in the cellar so he locked me in and left me to it. Lovely bloke. I was SO spoilt for choice in his Shop that I just couldn't make up my mind. I should've grabbed the display model Petersens that he showed me but instead I went back to Wales the next day with a Modulus Q5. I have kicked myself a number of times since... The Modulus IS lovely and still my best bass but those Petersens had curves like super models. It would have been a very different experience I'm sure.

I was glad to see The Gallery get a mention. I did get one of Martin’s Sei Flamboyants and, on the rare occasions I pop in, he still remembers me and, even more so, the bass. For bassist visitors to London, this has to be one of the places to visit

I love this so much, me and my best friend Dave (we were the two guitarists in the band Dave started) both lived in Stoke Newington in the late 1980s and would often get the 73 bus on a Saturday morning to Tottenham Court Rd and tour the amazing guitar shops on Charing X Rd/Denmark St. I bought my Dad a guitar from Macari's in about 1989, a Washburn electric acoustic that still sounds amazing.

Thanks for coming here and covering some of my favourite places. I bought my first LP copy and little amp in Macaris in 1979! Saved my pocket money for 18 months to buy theem. To those who criticise Denmark St, yes it's a bit pricey these days, but not drastically more than other places - guitars are overpriced everywhere in the UK. That's not the point. I often go there stiil, for stimulation and the feel and the history. It holds some of mine, lots of ours. We could try being proud of it instead of succombing to the English disease of universal sourness.

That was interesting. Thanks. A bit unsettling to see Denmark Street change like that - easier when you live in London and go there every weekend, as I used to when I lived there, many years ago. It's a shame that Chappell's closed their New Bond Street store in 2006, as it was quite historic, and you would have heard some good stories in there (I know they relocated to Wardour Street and the company was renamed). Loved the quick glimpse of the George Harrison 'Rocky' Strat copy (bottom left-hand corner of the screen in the first second of the footage from Hank's), and would have loved to have heard more about that.
