This is often the case when trying to match the tone of recordings. Hard for a riff to sound as big with the same amount of saturation/gain when it hasn't been compressed/eq'ed/layered to fit in the mix with other instruments supporting, such as bass and drums.

He points out something a lot of musicians don’t get. The music overall is what constitutes the heaviness. A heavy rhythm and bass can fool you into thinking a guitar part is cranked with distortion when more than likely it’s cleaner than you think. Queens, SOAD, and even Zeppelin are great examples
@indisguiseFUCK Жыл бұрын

Overall they did pretty well, but he's right (obv) that a lot had a bit too much gain. People always mistakenly think QOTSA are a fuzz-based band but most of their stuff is way cleaner than you'd expect. They play really loud to get their sound

Yep. Also using the neck pickup- they compensate for the muddiness a neck pup gets by using tons of mids to bring back the definition in the tone. Overall the video did a great job getting close to the vibe & tone of the original but when you really analyze it side by side there's often too much gain & treble

I've been searching for about 15 years and in that time I've discovered one of the biggest things you can do to get it is in playing technique. Way too much gain like he said, but it hard to replicated certain sounds with a single guitar when you built the sound of the record in a studio environment with a bunch of overdubs. If you solo'd some guitar tracks with your favorite tones, you'd be shocked at how thin they sound.

I find the remark about using single coil guitars very interesting. On stage you do see him playing single coils mostly, whilst Josh is on the humbucker side of things. However, I wonder if that's the same in the studio. Given that single coils usually can be fitted in a mix easier, I wouldn't be surprised if they were using them mostly when recording.
