Suuuuch a good idea about melting the lowlights further down on porous hair! Just realized that's why I can't get them right on myself. I keept thinking they were either too dark/light. But it's actually because it was too dark at on the ends, it looked off or stripey to me. Doing this will totally fix that! (But ugh, definitely not gonna be able to get away with just a couple different bottles shades eq lol)

I had the exact same thing happen to me! Once I figured this out it totally changed how lowlights turned out! I always think about how the sun would lighten hair and it will always be lighter at the ends and darker at the roots!

Hi I love what you did can you explain what you did at the front hairline and if you followed the same steps but just did subsectioning to get the most natural blend at the hairline or if those foils were all lightened

Hi! The front hairline foils were all lightened to keep it bright around her face! And then everything behind the hair line was the regular steps of two slices of lowlights and then one weave of lightener!

This is amazing ! Can you advise how much 9aa you used in the global toning formula ? Looks like it was just a dab tokeep the formula from being too ashy but would love to know . Thank you so much

It’s basically a dab. I pour the toner into the inner ring of the cap of the bottle. It’s gives a rose iridescence so that the hair isn’t ashy, but also isn’t yellow or gold.

I loveeed this video so much that I’m going to try to recreate this look! On all of the colors that you mixed together did you just do 1:1:1? And how many ounces did you use for the lowlight base? Just a full bottle of each color, if so did you only need one bottle of each? I have a problem with mixing too much color that gets wasted.

I believe I did 1:1:1 ratio. I usually mix under 20 ounces at a time and then remix as needed. This way my color product stays activated and I don’t risk wasting any product!

Love this tutorial! I do have a question, I see a lot of stylists choosing to use a Demi permanent instead of a semi or permanent, what would be the reasoning for that? How long does it last?

With a permanent color, you’d be using a 10vol which does lift and deposit. By using a Demi or semi permanent, you’re getting (mostly) deposit only. Demi permanent involves using some sort of developer and lasts about 20 shampoos. Semi permanent does not need to be mixed with a developer of any kind and is the most sheer option of coverage. It only lasts about 8-10 washes. So that is why most stylists choose Demi permanent - the best and longest lasting option for deposit only color!

This is hard to answer because I don’t “always” do anything. Every technique is modified to fit the client and their needs! As a general guideline, I will center my section off their part.

What level were her roots at the beginning? Just curious to see how you formulated based off the starting root level. I noticed the formula was 2 parts level 7, 1 part level 6. So do you generally formulate the lowlights the same as the starting root level? A level lighter?

Her roots were a level 7! I usually formulate lowlights to be the same or one level darker than the starting root level. But if I’m dragging the lowlight all the way thru the ends on blond hair, I will formulate the ends to be one level lighter.

Did you do horizontal slices on the sides? I have partial Highlight that feels to blonde and whats to look more lived in, I added a root shadow but that was not enough for her, so now im thinking lowlights but I dont want them to look to stripey 😢.

Yes thin horizontal slices on the sides! The trick to them not looking stripey is to have a lighter shade on the ends. So if their natural root color is level 7, i would use that level in the root area and then level 8 or 9 in the Mids/ends.

Beautiful, can you explain why in the back you took your sections on an angle vs Straight across ?

I find that when using a board to paint, the curvature at the back of the head makes it’s really hard if you take sections straight across. So I use a slight diagonal in the back so the board can get tight to the root line. I hope that makes sense!

Hey! No reason for not doing it. Other than I was probably trying to speed it up lol! Using the clear is really to help with blending. But I feel comfortable in my lowlight blending skills where it’s not a necessity to use that technique. Hope that helps!

Yes my toners are always formulated off my clients hair! I will almost always add a little bit of warmth to my toners, even if my goal is a platinum result. Gold/warmth reflects light which is what gives that shiny bright blond effect. Ashy colors absorb light, which can make the hair look flat and darker. Redken shades 9AA is hands down the best color to add to your blond toners!

You do need to, but you can include the filler shade in your lowlight formula!

It’s a level 6, I can’t remember exactly what WG in Redken shades stands for. But if you’re formulating with a different color line, you want to add gold to your formula otherwise the lowlights will look muddy on previously bleached hair.
