Reverse Dyeing a Geode Ice Dye (Using Out White Brite)

This tutorial is for a yellow 100% cotton shirt that I reverse dyed in a geode design using Out White Brite Laundry Whitener. After removing part of the color, I ice dyed the shirt using some green and earthy dye colors.

Wow! I love this one. The colors are perfect in this reverse. You should give yourself a break with the reverse s/a bucket. The one thing I consistently don't s/a soak are reverse dyes. I add the soda ash when I add the dye for ice dye. It works even better than a soak for reverse dyes. 😊

@FunEndeavors Try it! I used to do the separate s/a bucket for reverses until I tried just sprinkling s/a down on the piece before the dye. I did a direct comparison with two shirts, colors and process, except the s/a soak, and they came out the same. That's when I changed my process on reverse work. :-)

I like it, I wonder how much different it would look if you didn't OWB it and just dyed it with the contrasting green? The light color looks like it would work well like that - I've never tried it myself honestly, but I may :)

Thank you! It would've worked really well to just dye over it without using OWB. The color was light enough, and the colors I chose would've blended well with the darker yellow.

Thank you! Oh no, you have to get your sinew really tight or the Out White Brite will quickly remove all the color.

Thank you! No, especially when I make reverse dyes. Some of the wax coating gets melted off from the boiling water. 😀

This shirt turned out really cool. ❤ I was wondering, Will out white bright remove fresh dye from a shirt? I attempted a wig wag that turned out crappy, and I wanted to remove the color and try again. Do you think it would remove the dye so I would be able to retry?

Thank you! I'm not sure if it will remove all the color, but it will take out enough of it so that you can dye it again. Unless it is blue. For some reason color removers don't work well with blue dye. It may lighten it a little bit, but it won't totally remove the color.

Beautiful! I had soaked some shirts and forgot about them. I have no idea why I put black shirts in with white shirts, especially since I have dark soda ash that I soak darker shirts in. But the white shirts look pretty cool like they are.

Thank you! So, the darker soda ash stained the white shirts? I haven't ever soaked white items in the colored soda ash, I wondered if it would permanently stain them. I figured it would, but I wasn't for sure.

Do you let the shirts dry before using the OWB? And did you dry them before the soda ash soak?

This batch I tied in the evening, and I left them overnight before I used the OWB in the morning. They weren't totally dry though, but they were just barely damp. I don't let them dry out between the OWB and soda ash soak. They've been through the washing machine cycles though so they are barely damp when they go in the soda ash solution to soak.

What do you mean when you usually mention “ single layer” before you start tying. That throws me off a little as the shirt is being tied around in full…???

I mean that I only grab a single layer of fabric. I don't grab both the front and back of the shirt at the same time.
