Lovely shirt. I just subscribed and I’m wondering why you use hot water. Does it set the dye?
@FunEndeavors11 ай бұрын
No, the dye should already be set by the time I begin the rinsing process. I use hot water when I rinse the shirt to get any of the excess dye that didn't bond with the fabric. It is the best way to get out the extra dye so that it doesn't continue to bleed color in the wash.

@FunEndeavors4 ай бұрын
I don't know that I have any videos specifically on putting the color on the bottom of the shirt. You would just put it on the opposite 1/2 of the shirt as this one. On the part of the shirt that I left white. To avoid getting dye on a specific area, you can isolate that area, tie it off with sinew and cover it with a plastic baggie to try to keep the dye off of it. I have done a couple of shirts using that technique. The designs were right in the middle of the shirt though. @FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
No, not really. I just rinse in cold water for quite awhile. When I soak the shirt the pH neutral Dawn dish soap will help neutralize any little bit of soda ash that may still be hanging around so that the color won't re-bond somewhere else on the shirt.

@FunEndeavors3 жыл бұрын
I would suggest a professional textile detergent like Synthrapol or something similar if you have that available. Otherwise, perhaps you can find another pH neutral dish soap to use. The water I soak the shirt in is very hot. If the shirt is slightly damp when you begin applying the dye, it won't flow as much as it will on a dry shirt.

@FunEndeavors2 жыл бұрын
I use Procion fiber reactive dyes and I do need soda ash to raise the pH so that the dye will bond properly with the fabric. If you are using a different kind of dye, you will need to consult the instructions for your particular dye to see if soda ash is a necessary component. Some dye kits add the soda ash directly to the dye bottles.

I took the rubber bands off before rinsing. I didn't think about it until after I took them off. What could I do to help keep the colors from mixing?
@FunEndeavors2 жыл бұрын
The most important part is rinsing first in cold water to get out the soda ash. Once the soda ash is out of the shirt, the chance of the colors mixing gets greatly reduced since the dye needs soda ash to bond with the shirt.

You could use bleach. If you bleach the shirt, make sure you neutralize the bleach afterwards though. Otherwise you will probably end up with holes in your shirt. To neutralize the bleach you can use a solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water (1 part hydrogen peroxide and 9 parts water).

After I rinse 2-3 times would I be able to wash multiple shirts in the washer together , or should I wash them 1 at a time?
@FunEndeavors2 жыл бұрын
After I rinse my shirts really well I usually wash them together. If the colors are really dark or drastically different (like a yellow shirt and a black shirt) I don't wash them together, but if the colors are similar I will put them all in one load. I always add a bit of Dharma's textile detergent to the washing machine too and that will help keep any of the excess dye that is washed out from bonding with the shirts.

Hello there , I need some tips from you , I will like teach this o a youth group in my church.
@FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
Hi! This would be a great design to do with a Youth Group. I've tie dyed with the Youth Group at my church before and their shirts turned out really cool. I didn't do a single color though, I let them dye them however they wanted to. I offered the rainbow colors and black dye. We did the process outside. I set up 8 foot tables and a couple of stations for dyeing on each table. I also had a couple of separate tying tables. All the Youth couldn't tie dye at the same time. Part of them were tying their shirts while others were dyeing them. If your group is large, you can have another game or activity for those who aren't tie dyeing to participate in until it is their turn. I used long under the bed plastic containers that have metal shelves over the top for the dye stations. Generally 2 teens can use 1 container at a time with 1 shirt on each end. Since they are deep, I didn't empty the bottom of the container after each use, but I did clean the metal rack so that dye transfer from the shirt before didn't happen. I had helpers at each station and I taught them how to spiral a shirt before we started. I'm sure your group will have a lot of fun making their own shirts.

hi i did the same tie dye color. if i did one section purple and then the next section leaving it white as the pattern keeps going on, what do think it would look like?
@FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
Each section of color you apply will make a swirl. The size of the swirl depends on the size of the section. I did 1/2 this shirt in plum, so the swirl is pretty large. The space that you leave white will also make a white swirl. This video shows what would happen if you added several smaller sections of color: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaXSqqhsZqeSl5Y

You can dye this design either damp or dry. If you are using fiber reactive dyes like I use, the soda ash is essential. Without it, the color will eventually wash out of the shirt. The soda ash raises the pH so that the dye can permanently bond with the fabric.

Can I use any kind if dish soap?
@FunEndeavors3 жыл бұрын
I use blue Dawn dish soap in particular because it is a pH neutral dish soap. The purpose of adding dish soap is to make sure the pH isn't too high where the dye would be encouraged to bond back onto the shirt during the soaking phase. That's the reason that I use a textile detergent in the wash cycle as well. If your dish soap is a pH neutral one or at least not a higher pH dish soap, it would probably work. I haven't ever tried any other ones though.

@FunEndeavors3 жыл бұрын
Thank you - I'm glad you liked it! It isn't necessary to use the Blue Dawn dish soap if you don't want to. The blue dawn helps to keep any of the excess dye that is being rinsed from re-depositing back onto the white areas of the shirt. It won't lighten the dye color though. The dye that is being soaked out of the shirt is excess dye that didn't bond with the fabric and that will eventually wash out of the shirt.

You can use the Tulip dyes. I suggest washing the shirts before you dye to get out any chemicals that were used when the shirt was made. I LOVE the idea of the thickened water! So that must just lock out the dye? I would love to see that done. Thank you for ALL your amazing videos. Ive learned SO much from you Angie!
@FunEndeavors4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I usually just leave a larger white area than I really want and expect some of the color to creep over there. The dye likes to travel to an area that isn't already saturated with either dye or water. So, the thickened water will fill the fibers and hopefully deter the dye from creeping into that area as much. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos - thank you for watching!

Thank you so much! I use Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes. It is a cold water dye that works on natural fibers like cotton, rayon, hemp, etc... The dye must be used with soda ash to raise the pH though. Once the shirts have been dyed and washed out properly the colors don't fade. I truly have shirts that are 10+ years old and they are still vibrant after numerous washings. They are sold by several suppliers. I purchase my dye from Dharma Trading Company, Custom Colours, Grateful Dyes or Prochemical and Dye. Here are there links: www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html?lnav=dyes.html. customcoloursinc.storenvy.com/ www.grateful-dyes.com/dyes/ prochemicalanddye.net/pro-mx-fiber-reactive-dye.html

I enjoyed your video. Explain why you gradually rinse from cold water to hot please? Thank you.
@FunEndeavors3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I rinse in the cold water to rinse the soda ash out of the shirt. Since the dye needs soda ash (a higher pH) and heat (that's why I rinse in cold water) to react and bond with the fabric - once the soda ash is out of the shirt, the chance of the white area getting stained lessens. After I've rinsed really well in cold water, I gradually warm the water up to rinse out the excess dye that didn't bond with the fabric. The hot water is what helps to rinse out the dye so that it doesn't continue to bleed color with each washing. I add the Blue Dawn Dish Soap into the hot water when I soak the shirt to help neutralize the pH of the water and keep the white area from staining.

What exactly is “thickened water”? And can a similar method me used with liquid dye to make it stay in a certain dyed section with a less likely chance to bleed into other colors?
@FunEndeavors3 жыл бұрын
Thickened water is made by adding sodium alginate into the water to make it thicker. You can do that with dye as well. Thickened dye won't run as much, but it is also a little more difficult to get it down into thick folds. I use thickened dye when I paint on a shirt using fiber reactive dye. It's also great for outlining or making intricate designs. Here's a link to the kind of sodium alginate that I buy: amzn.to/2EkHoZX You will need an immersion blender or some other kind of blender to mix the sodium alginate into the water really well, otherwise it will clump. The mixture will also continue to thicken as it sits for awhile.

I'm sure other dish soap would work, but I'm not sure it would work as well since I haven't tried it. There is something special about blue Dawn dish soap. There are a lot of cleaning "recipes" that call specifically for blue Dawn because of unique formulation. In tie dye, blue Dawn is used because it is pH neutral and will help neutralize any of the soda ash that might be left in the soaking water so that the released dye won't re-bond with the fabric.

Hi Angie is there anything else i can use instead of thickened water to prevent the color creeping on white areas?
@FunEndeavors4 жыл бұрын
Hi! You can either leave a much larger white area than what you would really like when the shirt is done, or you can just add plain water to the area that you would like to keep white.

Thank you for this great tutorial - such clear instructions and presentation! I have a question: I accidentally bought the kind of dye that comes in the form of dry crystals. According to the instructions, I'm supposed to dissolve the dye in boiling water and submerge any fabric I wish to dye in the steaming-hot dye-water solution. I doubt that works for this technique, so I wonder if pouring that mixture on my prepared t-shirt will make any difference to the outcome? Or should I stick it into the water sideways? I don't have that type of pointed bottle and I don't know if keeping the water hot enough matters for this kind of dye. Both the dry and liquid versions come in a box and I forgot to shake it to see if it was the one I wanted. :/ Edit: PS: Another tip: Adding vinegar is supposed to lock the pigment in the fibres better. Just pointing that out in case anyone wants to add that step after the first rinse/soak in dish soap water. (:
@FunEndeavors3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much - I'm glad you liked it! I'm not familiar with the type of dye that you purchased. However, if it was me - I would probably try sticking the shirt into the hot dye sideways. I've done that with a shirt into color remover before and it worked fairly well. Vinegar is used during the dyeing process with some types of dye. However, it will not keep the shirt from bleeding dye with the type of dye that I've used (Procion Fiber Reactive Dye). The dye that is bleeding out is the excess dye that hasn't bonded with the fabric. Allowing the shirt to process at a high enough temperature for a long enough period of time is what properly bonds Procion Fiber Reactive Dye to the fibers. After the shirt is rinsed properly, the dye is permanent and won't fade. I have shirts that I made 10+ years ago and the dye still looks great. The fabric of shirt is wearing out, but the color looks bright.

I dyed too much black on my shirt. Can I use dabs of bleach to get a better pattern? Don't want to put holes in it
@FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
Bleach normally won't take black back to complete white without a pretty big risk of damaging the fabric. You could use Out White Brite to get the shirt back to a light enough color to dye over it with a different pattern, and try a spiral on a different shirt using black.
@lucas.jx23 жыл бұрын
is there a way i can ensure the spiral comes up from the bottom of the tshirt?
@FunEndeavors3 жыл бұрын
The spiral on this shirt is at the top of the shirt because I found the area of the shirt where the neck of the shirt was and applied dye to that area. If I want a specific area dyed - I will sometimes mark that area of the shirt with a washable marker before I begin tying so that I can find it easier after it is tied. So in this case, you could mark the bottom or hem of the shirt and then after it is tied, you can apply dye to that area of the shirt.

Que liquido le pone al final para fijar la pintura en la polera ???
@FunEndeavors3 жыл бұрын
@@frutodeurano I use Procion Fiber Reactive dyes. To permanently fix them to the shirt, I soak the shirt in a soda ash solution before I tie it which raises the pH. Then after I apply the dye I allow the shirt to sit for at least 24 hours at a temperature above 70 degrees Fahrenheit to bond the dye to the fabric. Then the shirt is rinsed and washed. I don't have to add any additional liquid - after this process the dye is permanent.

Do u absolutely need to have soda ash for this specific type of design ? Even if ur shirt is not white ?
@FunEndeavors4 жыл бұрын
For the specific dye that I use (Procion Fiber Reactive Dye) you absolutely have to have soda ash, regardless of the color of shirt. It is what bonds the dye to the fabric. However, if you are not using the same type of dye that I am, consult the instructions for your particular dye to see if the soda ash is a necessary component.
