I have to redo this portion of the test on Wednesday. I passed everything else leading up to this part and then got anxious and starting second guessing myself. Im going to live in the trucks tomorrow and Tuesday and make sure i get it in the alley every single time i try so i feel good and confident. I trained on a 53 ft trailer with the tandems all the way back, then tested on a 48 ft with the tandems at the Florida line and it felt INCREDIBLY DIFFERENT. With the 53 ft i trained on id line my back tandem up with the cone and my set up was perfect every time but with the 48ft one i tested on it was like i couldn't figure out that sweet spot to line up with the cone and the line and i couldn't find the angle on my landing gear either. Truthfully I'm pretty sure it was 80% test anxiety and 20% overthinking the different trailer.

So if I was starting with my tandems inside that offset tracking white line closer to cone, while behind the cone deeper toward the box.. not next to it how you have it set up in this video..would that have a huge effect on my spacing when I go for the final step when I try to set my tractor straight within the box for the final straight back? Took my test today, and I got my trailer in the box, but when I tried to straighten my tractor in front of it inside the box, my passenger side drive wheels kept encroaching the side wall. Is this why?? Just trying to get an understanding of where I’m going wrong. And your video is giving me a better understanding of where I made my mistake.. thanks a lot!
@truckerstevecdlinstructor15 күн бұрын
@@tomg1423 the only reason why I have my students back up to or near the white hash mark is to ovoid hitting the cone on the right side. If you are encroaching on the right side is your left rear trailer tires is or may be going to deep into the alley. Also you may be backing up to much when backing into the alley with the right. Know when to Stop 🛑. Small pull up. Then back under the trailer I have several videos on this. Showing when to Stop. The correction and backing under the trailer into the alley. Hopefully your CDL instructor and you will work out what you are doing wrong. Please 🙏 check out the videos / over 20 on the reverse offset.

So does the back bumper have to be in the box in the back when ever you’re done on this one?

my school has me learning on a short 30 foot trailer i failed once already, does that make any difference to a long trailer or does the info apply to all?
@truckerstevecdlinstructor6 ай бұрын
With a shorter trailer you don’t have to be that close to the rear cone entering the alley. Smaller trailer reacts much faster but is easier to this skill than a 53 foot trailer. You will get it with practice. Keep this channel informed of your progress

Quick question... aren't you supposed to stay in between the cone and white line when doing this exercise?
@truckerstevecdlinstructor7 ай бұрын
On the forward offset tracking yes. On the reverse offset backing back into the alley - NO ( but you will be near it )
@viperomen9143 ай бұрын
You don’t have to stay between them throughout the whole skill test, but when you’re pulling out to line yourself up your back trailer wheels do have to pass between the line and cone

At 4:16 to make sure the drives are on the line; would you look through the passenger mirror to see that or the driver mirror to see that?
@truckerstevecdlinstructor17 күн бұрын
At 4:16, looking at my drivers mirror ( learning to use your passenger mirror is good). What is most important is where your left trailer tires are. The tractor drive tires may be in front of the line ( hash marks) by one yard. As you start backing into the alley. Note: as my students advance in their skills, it’s all about the trailer wall and rear tires. The students are no longer looking at the placement of the tractor tires. They are driving the trailer into the alley. See all of my videos to see what I’am talking about. But still take it one step at a time. Practice

@@truckerstevecdlinstructor I understand, appreciate it, I like this method right here and I have one more question, so if you get an encroachment does that mean you automatically failed?
@truckerstevecdlinstructor17 күн бұрын
@@kerringtoncoleman3896 depends on how many points you have starting this skill. It’s so important to aced the first three skills. An encroachment is 2 points. 8 or less is a pass. 9 points is a fail . You have 2 free pull ups for test no 4. Reverse offset. One point for any pull up starting with the third one. Also you have 10 minutes for the reverse offset. No rush.
