My driving instructor had a foolproof method for parallel parking - nearly 30 years ago now - its simplicity blew my mind at the time and I’ve never forgotten it. Your video reminds me of that old lesson so much. Pull up parallel to the front car, making sure the back of both cars are perfectly aligned. Turn the wheel and reverse until your near-side wing mirror passes the back of the other car. The second your wing mirror passes, you turn your wheel fully in the other direction. You’ll end up nicely aligned to the kerb. Those two little tips: aligning the backs of the cars and then waiting for the wing mirror to pass, have served me well since then. Parallel parking is absolutely my favourite manoeuvre. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos, I always love them and learn so much.
@xela3912 жыл бұрын
same the method i learned was to line up the side mirrors with the car in front of you and turn the wheel one full turn and back up till you're at a 45 degree angle then turn the wheel fully in the opposite direction and back up

It's hard to explain on a message but directly to the side is 90 so half way there. Although 45 is the absolute maximum. Don't aim for 45 degrees just put a reasonable angle on that will get you to the curb. Even if you only have 20 degrees you will still make it. My advice, most people put too much angle on, less is more.

One small trick I found very useful to judge your angle in the "Angle On" part is to look at the side mirror opposite to the curb. When you can see both the side and the front of the car parked behind you the angle is correct and you can straighten the wheels. Struggled a lot in my driving lessons because the instructor and relatives kept saying 45 degrees, but I couldn't visualize that in my head. Hope this helps

My driving instructor taught me this way: align the near side back window (the little one behind the passenger's seat's window) with the rear headlight of the vehicle near you. Then steer completely, reverse until you can see the logo of the car (if not present you can easily judge the center, there's some wiggle room), straighten the wheels, go back until you have space, make sure you check the mirror of course, then boom, you're done. It sounds contorted but trust me, it's easier said then done. I was told you can do even really narrow parkings effortlessly by following this method. I was terrible at it, but after several repetitions I managed to surprise the examiner who was genuinely impressed. The main flaw I noticed is it really depends on a vehicle, we have a car that is pretty boxy in the rear, so I have to adjust some reference points. But if your car type (brand doesn't matter) matches the driving school's, you should be completely fine. Which seems to be true considering I tried it with my dad's car and it does apply to that.

Thanks for this. No wonder I find the drivers a bit rude here... that they speed by people when they are trying to park or pull out from a parking spot. What I mean by this, is if no one is coming when I start to pull out from a spot, polite drivers would stop (or so I thought). Having lived where lived in the US for years, where most drivers were polite (by US driving standards), few people would slip past. The person parking or pulling out has the right away once they have begun to do either with no cars initially in view. Now, I won't make this error--born out of misunderstanding as to what it means to be polite (politeness is on the other foot here)--when I take my exam.

I am an old guy and I passed my driving test way back in 1965, in those days the cars that we had did not have power steering so the turn while stationary was very difficult and we had to reverse and move, l also had to do hand signals throughout the test as well as use the indicators, the clutches on cars were a bit temperamental and not as easy to use as today`s cars. But we did not have the theory test and I think that the test had less in it, we had to reverse round a corner and keep within a certain distance from the kerb, we had to do a reverse park and the turn in the road, if we touched the kerb, you failed. That was a terrific instructional video, my father owned his own driving school so I had a good teacher. I think that you are too.

Thank you. Cars were definitely harder to drive back then. Easier now but the roads already more challenging which leads to anxiety in many new drivers. Today, you can touch the curb and pass, as long as it's gently. A word with the curb is ok but an argument or a mount is not.

Just a quick thank you for all your videos. I am working my way through them to help rebuild my confidence after being hit head-on at 50mph by a drunk driver 3 times over limit . Recovery from most of the physical injuries took almost a year (knee and leg damage and pain is permanent), however, the psychological damage is taking longer ... the accident was 3 years ago! I did force myself to start driving again 6 months after the event, but it is going to take some time to regain confidence and self-belief. BTW I can't stop driving as we're in a rural area with no public transport and no shops. Shame you're 110 miles away in Colchester!

really good thing to judge the angle for learners is when theres a car ure parking in front of - when the left edge of the car behind appears in the right wing mirror, u know u have a good angle (if the car behind is parked well ofc)

Interesting comment on dry steering. I personally don’t recommend that but after your video, I am slowly changing my stance on it.

Very good advice about parallel parking. I am usually quite good at this, although sometimes I have to try again, but not much. I am not so good at forward bay parking, so I shall watch the videos again and again. My Instructor does not like dry Steering though, I have to start moving before I steer.

Thank you, dry steering makes it easier, cars have power steering these days which makes it easier. I have videos on dry steering if you're interested in searching for them.

Each time when coming back to watch your videos, there is always something more to learn from. A long waiting list here to do the driving test after a few lockdowns, but it allows me to review your videos over and over again. Thanks for these clear and less complicated explanations.
