I spent some time at Sebago Lake with the family, and gave myself the challenge of working towards an offside reverse sweep roll. I was able to get there on my first attempts, which prompted thinking about why - I was just coming from having spent time at HRGF with mentors working on my reverse sweep, so I applied what I had just picked up and it made all the difference. Moral of the story - working with mentors and instructors is incredibly useful.

The reverse sweep is my favorite roll, because it doesn't put you in a position for water to go up your nose. Seriously. It took me a solid year of trying on Friday nights alone at the pool before I got it. It seems so simple now. I think the advice to use your whole bottom half to roll the kayak is good. You can feel this same principle when you really get your torso rotation in a forward stroke happening from the feet to the thigh to the hip and up. Same with an edged turn, there are times you can change the emphasis on your hips and thighs and push the kayak around. It's great stuff. Re having a mentor, I learned more in 2 hours from a coach than two years on my own prior. Spot on.

qaannat couldn't agree more. Same for me, took me over a year on my own of pool sessions to get it - and it only started working after talking to mentors. After that, took minutes of working with them to make it better. They'd have tips that unlocked it and made it effortless. Makes all the difference.

Magnus Persson I love the reverse sweep. Seems so elegant. And I love knowing you can get back up if you capsize face down.

Absolutly love your videos, you seem to have covered more or less every question that I could possibly come up with. Unfortunatly I don't have the chance to train my rolls with a coach, what would you advice, start with learning a solid balance brace as a first step to the layback roll or going straight for the roll and working on the balance brace etc. afterwards?

Peter Wolf thanks, much appreciated! If you can't work with a coach, then yes, work on that balance brace first, get a friend to stand next to you and help you. It's very easy to hurt a shoulder or your back learning to roll on your own. I'm not saying everyone who tries it will hurt themselves, I'm just saying that it's very useful to have a spotter next to you that can help bring you up quickly while learning and that can give you direct feedback. It's one of those things that we think we're doing something but our bodies are doing the exact opposite. That's why I always film myself. The camera doesn't lie... Also, be very wary of the location, make sure you can't hit anything in the bottom - rocks, logs, etc.

KayakHipster thank you for your answer. So maybe you are right, instead of more or less blindly experimenting, I will propably look out for a rolling coach!

I think your focus is in the wrong place. Your head is too high; "nose to the knee" or "cheek to the gunnel". If your body position is better you won't need as much force to come up.
