An alternate view of the 'drive the leg' part is to think of changing which buttock is seated. The buttock shift is good practice for beginners to avoid leaning the body when boat edging (rotation) is desired. The knee motion follows from the buttock shift, and as one become practised the buttock shift becomes un-noticed. The floor exercise looks really good!

@philipoakley5498 Absolutely! And I have many people where the leg talk is completely lost on them. And as soon as the butt motion is thought of it just works. Same results but different interpretation.

@leoburns9674 Thanks! Good luck in your practice. Are there any subjects you would like a short video like this on? I am always looking for inspiration for a good topic.

@@KayakToTheSea … landing on a hard beach (think our Georgian Bay Ontario… “granite”)…. With a loaded sea kayak. How to get landed and gear removed 😊

Tim, I love your vids. I am pretty new at kayaking with only 2 years behind me, but when the water is open here (lakes freeze over in winter) I am able to paddle nearly every day. I work a 60 hour week, but I get on the water before the dark mornings and let the sun rise on me when I am out. I am back in my shop working by 9:30 and I work until 9;30 PM, 5 days a week. Most Saturdays and 1/2 of each Sunday I am also out. Saturdays often for 12-14 hours. Yet the time I have every week and the practice I do with much of the info I got from your vids has helped me immensely. In 3 years I will be retired (70 or 71 years old then) and I hope to travel some to go on some trips, and the Great Lakes is one place I'd love to see. If you have recommendations I'd be very interested. I am VERY ignorant of "all things cyber" and the use of the computer and the internet is very foreign to me so I hope I find a way to communicate, but if not I will still look at every vid you put out. Thanks

If you make it to the Great Lakes head to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. There are some great paddling spots ranging from exposed barren shoreline to secluded islands and marshlands.

Thanks. Really like the suggestion to put the GP behind the head. Will try it later this week.

I’ve watched all your videos in the past, greatly enjoying both the full Greenland and Great Lakes journeys. Just rediscovered this one as I’m in the process of trying to teach myself this roll (also my first roll, and in an Oru Bay, which I’ve been told is not ideal for learning). I’m relying mainly on the Sheri Perry/Turner Wilson video, and it was helpful to see your take on the same things. Always get more from seeing something from a few different perspectives. I moved to this roll first because I’ve had a ton of trouble trying to get onto the back deck for the layback roll. No problem with a float/avataq but only failures with the paddle. But for this one I’m getting pretty regular on the pry recovery and incorporating the sweep. Now I just need to finally try it with the backwards capsize. Thanks for doing this. Would love it if you ever had time to add to the series.

Great work! Going over backwards can be a bit discombobulating. Just take your time and let yourself float up to the surface with a big arch to your back. And I've got another technique video in the works, just takes time as a solo operation.

I'll be 70 on my next birthday. Not obese but a little over weight. Played sports my whole life. Think I'll be able to get it. I'll be trying a Jackson, Zen 3.0 large. I'm 240lbs?

I'm not super familiar with Jackson kayaks so I don't have much insight for you with that specific kayak. But, in general, whitewater kayaks tend to have a good 'knees-up' sitting position so leaning forward to get low to the front deck can be easier than a lower volume sea-kayak or skin-on-frame, so that is a bonus. Is this your first time rolling or just using this kayak? Good luck!

I love all Greenland paddle roll videos. But I have one major complaint to ALL of them, and that it is rare that anyone teaches any of these rolls in a expedition volume kayak, loaded with some weight, while wearing a fully equipped pfd filled with radios and beacons and water bladders.

I always try to teach these techniques in a variety of kayaks and conditions because of just that. While it is great to learn these things in a controlled environment the times that we would need them aren't controlled so we should practice like we were actually out in our normal paddling gear. Check out my '7 tips for better rolling' video, I use a few different equipment setups in that to show the differences that different gear sets can make.
