I was just about to comment: "sorry for my ignorance, but how the hell do you know it is on reverse thrust?"... then I said, hey, let's do the homework. I found some explanatino videos and it is actually pretty easy to tell the difference between normal operation and reverse operation. For those lazy enough not to investigate, here it goes: the engine actually doesn't go in reverse. It keeps spinning in the same direction (obviously!). Instead, a compartment opens up, redirecting air in the opposite direction, which slows down the airplane. Watch 2:19 to see an example of the "opening" action. Another thing that lets you know it is reversed is the rain splatter all over the road and in front of the engines. Hope it helps other aviation ignorants like me :D nice vid!
@A_Beached_Whale5 жыл бұрын
Paolo Costa it would also take so much time and energy to redirect the heavy turbofans spinning at some thousand RPMs from clockwise to counterclockwise and vice versa -honestly it might break even the engines as they probably aren’t meant to rotate in opposite direction of its design. Same thing with putting cars in reverse, the engine’s crankshaft doesn’t actually start turning backwards, there’s just a gear that transfers energy in the opposite direction of the crankshaft.
@davecrupel28175 жыл бұрын
Vincent, spinning a jet engine backwards indeed IS very bad for the engine, but it has nothing to do with one way gear turning. The fans and compressors are free to spin either way. The problem is, the engine is designed to compress the air by rushing more air in from the front. If air slows down on its way into or through the compressor, in an uncontrolled manner, it collects and builds backwards pressure. Which completely stops the air flow, shoots it back out the front, and blows out the engine. This is called a "compressor stall." They are essentially explosions by the strict definition, because they happen so quickly. The higher the throttle and rpm, the worse the stall, the louder it will be, and the harder it will punish the engine. At cruising altitude and speed, it can be a truely nasty thing to have happen. And at takeoff power, i don't even want to imagine that. Its why you'll never see a jet pilot "punch it" or hit the throttle like someone stepping on the gas pedal. Jet engines need a somewhat slow, smooth RPM increase so they don't stall, or so other problems don't happen. Nowadays, there are electronic measures in place so, even if you do hit the throttle, the engine is made to accelerate in a smooth consistent manner.
@abukareem65115 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing this out. Interesting to see the Emirates a380 at 3:55 only has 2 of the 4 engines doing the reverse thrust (2 compartments open instead of 4).

My best reverse thrust experience was in 2017 on a flight to Greek island Zakhyntos with Condor. The pilot buttered the landing and then COMPLETELY slammed those breaks and put the reverses on max so he could take the high speed exit. After the landing the captain said something that translates this: Now you know what it feels like when Formula 1 drivers decelerate from 300 down to 50 in less then a 100 meters. Made. My. Day.
