KEEP LOSING.. I broke my back last June in a slip & fall accident at a swimming pool in Ecuador , where I live. I wanted & needed to lose 15 lbs to "lighten the load". on my poor back. So adopted PLANT BASED diet, listened to Neal Barnard regularly - intermittent fasting about 14 hours overnight. MARVELLOUS resultados - I am 20 yrs older than you... never been obese as you ( not a crime but much harder) increase your high activity level and stick to it for a year or more... your life will be yours again - trust me on this.and with no real hunger EVER... just don't GIVE UP! ..

Thank you Chuck & Dr. Barnard! I am a 61 year old woman originally from Detroit living in Yokohama, Japan for the last 36 years. I have lost a total of 6 kg ( about 13 lbs ) since I've been here. We eat so many kinds of vegetable & rice here; not a lot of fats like nuts & seeds . My triglycerides has gone down from over 200 down to 147. According to my Dr ( who worked at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor) I am very healthy!

By starting to eat vegan I lost 14 kg in 2 months : 61 kg and 179 cm. Sitting did hurt. I have never been so tired. Slept 16 hours a day. So after 2 months I went vegetarian. Went back to 63 kg. I kept eating vegetarian for 7 years. The worst years of my life. After 7 years it was enough and I stopped eating vegetarian. In 3 months I was back on 75 kg and had my energy back. So vegetable eating is not good for everybody. My daughter is vegan and my wife vegetarian and I am the cook.

Also, we need more than 55% of raw foods in our diets for us to get the enzymes we need to properly digest our food, as well as other metabolic functions our bodies. Having control of what food is in your environment is what I find most helpful. I'm fortunate that my household is vegan and I work from home. When we moved across the country to be near family we lived with my parents for a few months and ate so much accidentally vegan junk food because it was there. Edit: It's much easier to resist junk food once or twice a week at the store then every time I open the fridge.

I understand the frustration of being surrounded by vegan junk food. We have a few vegan restaurant options here, but most are far from whole foods, and are mostly plant based burgers and pizzas. It would be refreshing to have an honest conversation about the effect of location on healthy options and lifestyles.

@@CyclingRochelle Hi Rochelle, You sound very healthy and great job going plant-based. I have been plant-based for about 2 years myself. I would consider the following things. 1) How active am I? 2) What is my muscle to fat ratio. Being skinny doesn't necessary mean you are healthy. You need muscle and cardio as well. Also a point of note. Having the majority of your fat located in your stomach region is not great. It mean you have more visceral fat which is not a great thing. Overall you seem like your on the right track but consider my comment and the comments of the people above. Good luck.

With cinnamon, one has to be careful about how much to consume depending upon variety used. There are two varieties; Cassia (Cinnamonum cassia), a Chinese variety, and Ceylon cinnamon (Cennamonum verum). In the US grocery stores one will generally find cassia, and if it does not specify otherwise, you can assume it is cassia. The Chinese variety is cheaper, but one needs to limit the daily consumption, as a quarter teaspoon even a few times a week may be too much for small children and a daily teaspoon would exceed the tolerable upper safety limit for adults. Liver issues are caused by a substance called coumarin present in cassia, (coumarin is toxic to liver above the safe consumption limit). The Ceylon variety does not have coumarin so it is better to consume, but it is more expensive. The Ceylon variety can be found online (or possibly at Indian grocery stores). Both varieties are anti-Inflammatory and have high antioxidants content, but the Ceylon variety does not reduce blood sugar spike (cassia when consumed with food reduces the blood sugar spike and it seems that it is coumarin which blunts the blood sugar spike). Personally I use the Ceylon variety due to its better safety profile. Dr. Greger has a video comparing the two varieties on Nutrition Facts Organization website

Today is day 5 back on VERY low fat (like none) and very high carb eating as I'm tired of eating minuscule portions of fattier stuff. I am now losing weight I don't need to lose and am adding more calories in gradually to see how much I can handle. There does seem to be something about "the fat you eat is the fat you wear" after all...especially as a woman in her mid 50s. Also, I started drinking a gallon of water a day recently after I found out I was somehow dehydrated again and drinking truckloads of water does seem to improve metabolism. I started doing this before getting the fat out of my diet and started dropping weight despite not eating less. I Googled it to see if I was imaging things, but there are studies showing that when you drink 16 oz. of water at once, your metabolism goes up by 30% for the following 30-40 minutes.

Agree 1000000% on the vegan plant-based processed foods. Been plant based since 2008. My cholesterol and all other markers were fine. Over the past year I got addicted to some of the store bought options and since I like supporting them I was overeating them. Cholesterol shot up and I gained about 5 - 8 pounds. I cut that all out and levels are all back to normal. Now I will do a store bought option but maybe only once a week or every other week.

I initially lost weight, but started gaining it back when I hit menopause. I now added exercise and weight training, as well as consuming less food in general. I'm 5'4" and weigh 100 to 105 lbs at 55 yrs old too 🥰 been this way all my adult life and have been vegan for the last 4 years. But even before I went vegan I didn't really like overly greasy foods like deep fried foods and even though I used to enjoy sushi and steak ( I'm ethical vegan now and totally turned off by the idea of eating animal flesh) I only had them on special occasions and didn't consider them to be every day food. Avoiding saturated fat was really the key for my natural slimness I think.

Excess glucose gets stored in the liver as glycogen or, with the help of insulin, converted into fatty acids, circulated to other parts of the body and stored as fat in adipose tissue. When there is an overabundance of fatty acids, fat also builds up in the liver.

Wow! This is such a contrast in diet to what I've had recommended by my doctor and ND. What I've heard is first get your refined carbs (which I seriously struggle with!) out of your diet, like return to preindustrial food which means no big factory refined sugars, breads, highly inflammatory oils like canola, corn, soybean and no corn syrups which are processed by the liver immediately into fat etc. Once you're insulin resistance recovers (high carb diets are linked to early dementia's and Alzheimer's (and obesity contributes to these diseases like Dr. Barnard said) and low carb diets actually produce a significant improvement in dementia patients ) and your body's inflammation starts to heal ( like a drug addict that's developed a tolerance to their drug of choice restabilizing ) than you'll stop aging so fast and get healthy. Keep healthy fats high in your diet so you feel satiated and you can reduce your calorie intake without suffering because you stabilize your blood sugar. Slowly digested food over fast food! Aren't triglycerides way more significant than cholesterol for cardiovascular disease? (The Seven Day Adventist Study is interesting in that the less animal products consumed the longer people live! I've heard of many 100 year old's in Loma Linda. )Keep low carb vegetable's with high fiber number one on the plate so high nutrient density, (7 cups of greens per day) low calorie, high fiber. Animal protein is limited to the size of your palm per day and humanely raised and dispatched. Humans have eaten meat since the dawn of time and after cooking, it provides a significant amount of needed protein. What makes it bad for you? I know spinach has protein but I'd rather chow down on a plate of fresh caught salmon, locally raised chicken or wild game if I can get it! Meats are really hard to give up.

Please refer to my comments re your hair-loss podcast. Cardiovascular disease is “epidemic” among members of my maternal line. In elementary school? I was 45 lbs. overweight, on a typical Midwestern diet of “meat, potatoes, and apple pie”. Consuming a plant-based regimen? I am (at age 67), 5’6” in height and weigh 120-125 lbs. My bone structure is quite small (wrists 5.12” in circumference). HDL, LDL, and total cholesterol are normal, despite the fact that I consume considerably more plant oils and nuts than Dr. Barnard recommends. Also? Diabetes “runs” in my father’s family. Yet? My A1c and FBS remain normal. (Yes, my intake of di-and-polysaccharides is minuscule). Thank you.

Probiotics can help if you have a compromised gut microbiome, which is often a underlying problem when people can't eat fiber. If we ate a lot of meat or processed foods, or was forced to undergo an antibiotic treatment, our gutflora can be negatively affected by that. And sometimes the only way to get it back into balance is going for probiotic foods or a probiotic supplement. Try it out and see if it gets better. I used to have problems with whole grains and beans, but nowadays I feel totally fine when I eat these foods! You can find more info on the channel Mic the Vegan. This plant based diet idea is the worst. We ate animal protein for millions of years. Animal protein has the best complete protein sources. These vegans have to make eat like they work in a chemical factor to make sure they combine the right amino acids for proper protein synthesis. And as we age we need more protein to keep our metabolism high, retain muscle and keep bones strong. I'm not saying these things are impossible with an all plant diet, but it's much harder. Plus the heath benefits of eating Animal protein while eliminating processed foods is super healthy.

Only a minority of the worlds population has the genetic condition that ALLOWS them to consume dairy without a negative response. On top of that it's full of fat and hormones and all the other stuff they treat animals with. It's for the rapid growth of baby bovines, not humans. I fouls my sinuses--and I fought that for years because everyone in this region thinks it's GOOD for you. Nope. It's tolerated by a minority of folks and comes with problematic components. Studies actually indicate that more dairy consumption leads to lower bone density and more hip fractures in women. But you have to get past all the garbage info promoting milk/dairy to learn these facts. All in good health!

I work in the health field as a public health counselor, and I meet a lot of other professions in my work, other councelors, but also doctors and nurses. Trust me when I say that the health (disease) care system isn't setup for creating health, let alone maximixing it. Even though my place of work deal with preventative and health focused lifestyle support for seniors, many people I meet - even the ones I work closest with - have very limited knowledge about health. They are all about more exercise and cutting back on sugar, and nothing else. They don't understand the role that saturated fats, cholesterol, too high BCAA:s, heme iron, lack of fiber, too much sodium or a diet devoid of phyto nutrients have on long term health nor the status of the Western world today. One example is I met an elderly lady a few months ago that had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar. The women had pretty severe side effects from her medication and wanted to try a lifestyle approach to at least reduce her doses of the meds she was taking. The way she was eating was a lot of high fat animal products, a lot of dairy products like cream and cheese, some white potatoes, white bread, white rice and some baked goods, like cookies and cakes. Very limited intake of fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. I offered to help her with her diet, but I told her that we need to get her doctor on board because we need to monitor her blood pressure so that it doesn't become too low. When she called her doctor to setup an appointment her doctor talked her out of changing her diet. The doctor said that it would be too difficult to find a good balance in her medication, so it was best to just stay with the meds and accept that she has to take meds for the rest of her life. In some cases the "health" profession itself stops me from doing my job!

Not natural. There is no "free oil" in nature. Presses and chemicals and heat are used to to extract them--this removes the fiber of the plant. Most importantly our bodies don't deal with fractionated foods very well--they were developed on them. Our genetic background comes from natural foods only. This is why we have such problems today eating all these hyperprocessed psuedo-foods.

Diet aside, It doesn't help if a man's testosterone lowers as he ages. There's a limit to how much I can exercise. And sadly, I have an old knee injury that resurfaced and it's keeping me off my feet from more intensive exercise that I used to do. I can still do some exercise, but it's limited. But yes, moving to a more plant-based diet I do need to keep a lower amount of nuts and seeds in my diet as I greatly enjoy them. Here’s what I do know, when I ate a clean lower carb/fat “paleo” diet, the weight fell off and my labs were stellar. We are talking lots of low carb veggies across the color spectrum, small serving of meat, low glycemic fruit and no potatoes, beans, or grains. Now I am terrified to go back for fear of cancer and heightened mortality risk. As usual, I am so very confused.

I suggest you get a blood glucose monitor and track what you eat for a couple of week and see what foods are throwing your blood glucose off wrack. I would also suggest to get back to eating meat. Sometimes - when people switch from animal based foods to plant foods - they undereat calories. The best thing about a plant based diet can sometimes be the obstacle: That many plant foods are calorically dilute. For me personally a plant based diet has helped me lose weight, but if I eat a lot of fruits and veggies I can sometimes be too low in overall calories. So make sure to base your meals on whole grains, cereal grains, beans and lentils, and - if necessary - add more nuts and seeds to the diet. That ought to help you with your hunger, because it helps you to get in more calories.

Not all fats are bad. Not all saturated fats are bad. It's not only about "what" you eat, it's also about "when" you eat. Intermittent fasting is the best way to lose weight. Eating nothing after 8pm, and don't eat anything before 12pm (16-hr intermittent fasting). If what you're eating is not the healthiest, just add more fiber in your diet. Eat 1-avocado, 1-apple, 1-cup of broccoli, 1-2 tablespoons of Chia seeds or flaxseeds, eat a salad with dark/green/leafy vegetables, drink a shot (1-3 tablespoons) of Extra Virgin Olive Oil before your meals, drink Apple Cider Vinegar first thing in the morning (mix 1-tablespoon to 10-12oz of water). Remove seed oils, processed sugars (white table sugar) and as much processed foods as possible. Lost 30lbs in about 6 months without even trying. It's always hard in the beginning but stick with it, and you'll see results. Good luck!
