I always thought those commercials were so biased. Showing a '06-'13 Toyota Corolla with base wheels and hubcaps, versus a brand new Chevy Colorado with alloy wheels, Crew cab, Z71 offroad package? That is effectively a $16000 car (when new), versus a new $36000 truck? What would happen if you swapped the way underpriced Corolla for a '16 Ford Mustang GT? Much better comparison.

Here in Australia those 3.6 motors are known for faults such as stretched timing chains and sheared off big-end bearings. One mechanic blamed long service intervals saying that a giant oil capacity and synthetic oils are not sufficient to stop a mild sludging during huge service intervals which causes the weak, low clearance internals to break. Add to that direct injection causing valve fouling and you can keep these engines imho. If you want a high-toned, highly efficient, high-output small displacement engine you better make sure it’s made in Japan, I reckon.

The 8 speed transmission is great! For me.... I have heard some have issues with the tourq converter making the transmission act up. Usually it's a fluid swap to fix the problem. My Z 71 has 19k on it. Get like 22hwy mpg. I took the front spoiler of because we get to much snow and gawd awful. There is no Collings issues like gm said. It for better mpgs. I fact my dealer said "for the love of God please take it off". They will tskike it off for a hundred bucks. The interior is dated! But the shift is happening and it's good for all. The 2021 or 22 chevey/gmc trucks should be using the suburban /Yukon interior sceem. I just hope the 23 colorado comes with 350hp.

I just picked up a 19 Colorado in the Z71 trim. For the segment it is pretty nice. Definitely got a good deal on it. Feel like I would have had to pay more for a similarly equipped Tacoma which felt unrefined in the driving experience. I was a little disappointed in that aspect with the Tacoma. The interior also felt cheaper, and hasn't been updated in a decade. Needless to say I went with the Colorado mainly because I felt like I could get a lot more options and features for a few thousand less. Maybe that stuff will break over time, but I haven't kept a vehicle for more than 8 years either. Then again my past 2 vehicles were Subarus.

LOL, you can adjust the chime volume, it's in the touch screen vehicle setup controls. You can adjust the turn signal volume to by the way and you can adjust other things - headlight default settings, default audio volume when you turn on the truck, etc. These reviews are silly when done by someone that doesn't know anything about the vehicle, they do a quick glance around and assume they know what they are talking about. You didn't mention the automatic engine braking in tow-mode which is extremely unique for that class of truck. The height is needed for an off-road vehicle here in the west, but I wouldn't expect someone in Michigan with 'hills' that look like our driveway/garage approaches would know anything about that. The air dam is a snap-on/snap-off thing, the owner's manual recommends it is removed before using off-road. Most people don't drive around in 3 feet of snow, so the fuel economy boost is more valuable. Either way, it takes 5 seconds to remove. I'd agree with your comment about the hesitation issue, the transmission is a little slow to select a gear under full throttle from a cruising speed. It's biased toward fuel economy. If you flip it into tow/haul mode, you will get the lower end torque & horsepower bias. The price tag isn't bad, considering the tow capacity is about 200 lbs less than a Silverado 5.3L, I have the Z71 Crew/Long bed, and I tow a 27 foot Kodiak trailer @ about 6200 lbs loaded with mine all over the Sierras. Any Half-ton loaded up with features, you will pay $40,000+ for. That said, I'll probably upgrade to a full size Chevy or GMC Diesel in a few years, the towing power on the Colorado is decent for light-duty towing, but stopping while going down hill, curving around on Hwy 1 with a total length of maybe 55-60 feet, and I'm kind of desiring a little more substantial footing and low-end torque... but that's a half-ton gas thing, not a Colorado thing, the F150/Silverado1500/Ram1500 are all in the same general capability realm and if doing a lot of towing, its an issue. What really needs to be said is that American made trucks in virtually all classes really lead the market. While it's "close" in the mid-size class, its not in the full size.
@savagegeese8 жыл бұрын
+Scott Johnson We did adjust the volume it is still loud compared to about everything else. And yes tow mode is a nice feature, but you forget we went over manual operation of the transmission here and how good it was and would be for towing. For towing, many prefer to manually operate the trans.

+savagegeese I have 70% hearing loss from the military, it might be bad for others and I wouldn't know.
@scottjohnson9438 жыл бұрын
+savagegeese My experience in manual mode has actually been lack-luster, its ok on flat land and unloaded, but the automatic seems to ignore it if it believes it has a better plan. It will happily upshift/downshift on its own without regard to the manual selection. What it does work well for is holding a lower gear while descending with a load, it seems to be happy with an engine brake, but not much for the same condition going uphill, if I just don't want to listen to it crank up the revs, it will anyway.

I test drove a 2015 Tacoma back to back with a 2015 Canyon (the Colorado's GMC twin). The Canyon interior looked like it was made by Fisher Price. The Tacoma was way easier to drive around and park. I actually forgot I was in a truck when I was in the Tacoma. I didn't have that experience in the Canyon. It was obviously a truck, and it was very difficult to judge the corners of the vehicle. YMMV, but definitely test drive the competition.

Tale of two stories with the Colorado; great exterior design; horrible interior design. In classic Chevy rental-fleet quality fit-and-finish, the interior already looks dated with cheap hard plastics and aesthetic appeal of a 1998 Malibu. I'd still consider the truck but it's just a shame.

how are the breaks?
@scottjohnson9438 жыл бұрын
+steven hannah I have that same truck (although in Z71/Crew/Longbed config), to be honest, I flag the brakes as being something I would upgrade if I was going to keep it over the long term. My dad actually has an LT/Shortbed and I think his is kind of bouncy compared to mine, the longer wheelbase is very desirable. I bought the truck a year before upgrading our RV trailer, it was fine at first, now its undersized. That said, I find the brakes "ok", but maybe slightly 'dull'. I wouldn't call them 'squishy', just more like you feel like it could do better. It does stop in the lower end of the averages, but if I had my druthers, I'd put some performance calipers & rotors on it. One thing that I do like is the steering - my wife has a Chevy Volt, which was probably the first I think with Chevy's electric-assist steering. Deleting the hydraulic pumps, the hydro lines everywhere, makes the engine bay much cleaner and the steering seems much more precise. If idling at low speed like moving in & out of a parking space, it's electric, the power -assist is always there, no squealing if over-turned or lack of assist due to low RPM on the pump. I really hope GM takes that across the truck line. I've had mine for 20 months, around 20,000 miles on it, flawless performance in that time and I'm probably more of a heavy user - as most of its actual driving is either towing a 6200 lb travel trailer or my variety of 8 foot high box/utility trailers stuffed with yard/garden stuff going to the dump, etc. I don't commute, so the miles really have been more heavy-service focused. I'm going to do a 2 week RV trip in early May, I'll post a video of 'towing with a Colorado Z71', as I really haven't seen anyone talk about towing with it.
