I would like to talk about the relationship between the unequal half shafts and wheel hop. The quick and easy answer is this: the half shafts and the super skinny drive shaft are tuned to avoid hitting each other's resonant frequencies. Here's the more long winded one. If the drive shafts are symmetric, the rotational stiffness in both left and right axles would be the same. If the shafts are completely the same and the wheel/tires are the same, the left axle and the right axle will have the same frequency response. During a launch where all resonant frequencies are excited by stick-slip action of the tires, the resonance on one side will feed into the other through the LSD and create even higher displacement vibrations. The energy from the rotational resonance is fed back into the chassis in the form of linear vibrations. To avoid the resonances building on each other, the half shafts are tuned to have resonances away from each other. In order to get the highest frequency separation, the rotational stiffnesses will need to be as far apart as possible. The ratio of the fundamental frequencies is the square root of the ratio of the torsional spring constants. If one side is 4 times stiffer, the ratio of the fundamental frequency is only 2 times higher. That may seem a lot but for low frequency resonances such as wheel hop, we're looking at only a separation of a few Hertz. eg: 6Hz fundamental vs 12Hz fundamental for a 4X higher stiffness, only 6Hz separation of fundamental frequencies. Hope that helps explain why the shafts look so uneven. And why the drive shaft may also be so skinny.

@kylestewart83548 жыл бұрын
great review, however I feel everyone that reviews these hellcats are missing the segment totally. everyone wants to compare HC's to sportscars, or pony cars. and the reason for that is the price tag. but actually the Hellcat is a MUSCLE car. and there are no cars that compete in this segment anymore, ford doesn't make a muscle car. Chevy has the ZL1 to compete with the chally, but Chevy doesn't make a 4door muscle car. So reviewers have to take the charger out of it's segment and pull competition out of other segments and try and compare. but it's never apples to apples. and that is a HUGE PLUS for dodge. not a negative because it doesn't handle like a track car. or it's not as swanky as a highend 150k 4door lux sedan. Dodge is the only manufacturer that builds something outragesly Awesome for a middle class man. they should be praised for it!.

I have a 2015 challenger hellcat and just wanted to say I thought this was a great review. I am not an interior snob so it doesn't really bother me like it might some. The car can go across country in total comfort and then to the track and beat a lot of purpose built race cars. My personal best is 10.74, only mods are drive shaft and drag radials. One other thing that is great about that huge trunk.. It fits 2 drag radials and a jack. =)

I have to be honest and tell you this is a great review with very high production values. I would like to share one thing about the dash as an owner of a 2016 Dodge Charger Daytona which I have owned since new and did 140K+ miles on it. And that is.... No rattles, not one, not one squeak in the entire life I owned it. I live in city and drive 50 miles a day through potholes, traffic and terrible road conditions which would kill the experience on most cars in a few years. In all this time I had no noise at all in this car. Actually, with the exception of some minor issues the car has held up extremely well.

I don't understand such harsh criticism of the interior - and this comes from someone who dreams of rolling naked in a Bentley Mulsanne. He calls it "fleet car" and bottom of the barrel, but you'd have to be positively spoiled to really think that's a fair assessment.
@johnnyjackson29276 жыл бұрын
Red Bluesome there are 70,000 reasons why I agree with the harsh criticism of the interior. By no means am I spoiled either but the fact is that this car is too expensive to have such poor interior quality and it's really a shame. Your spoiled to think that the criticism is not appropriate to this car. Its like marrying a beautiful woman on the outside with a bad personality inside but you like the way she looks. Smh. The interior is trash point blank period and always has been. Its important because the interior is where you spend most of your time in. Lol.

Great review! I know I'm biased because I own a 2016 Challenger Hellcat (6-speed), but I actually like almost everything about the interior. I don't have rattles, the plastic dash is all soft touch and the leather on the center console feels high quality. I have the leather and alcantara seats which was my preference, but no complaints from me about the interior. I had a new BMW M2 before I traded it in for my Hellcat, and I immediately said the overall interior was way nicer than the M2. I know that may not sound like much, but while the interior is no way near the best out there, it is average to maybe even a slight touch above average. Not bottom of the barrel at all. Just my own thoughts, but I respect your opinion and love all your reviews!

The Dodge Charger mounts on a old chassis which means that the platform is "dated" in addition to the car being original as possible while persisting to it's identity unlike other cars. @Oggy LMAO, yes I've had a G6E-T for 7 years now. 185,000km on the clock and the only thing I've ever had to fix on it other than usual wear items was a broken power steering pump pressure sender for all of $40. Ford would have lost the taxi & police car market in ANZ if they had made a bad Falcon. Like any manufacturer, Ford make some duds and some great cars - just writing them off as a brand entirely because you like the competition and therefore they are your tribal enemy is the height of idiocy.

I thought "Hellcat" was a reference to the F-6F Hellcat, a WWII Naval fighter?... The Ford Mustang is named after the North American P-51 Mustang. If it's not, then, it's not as cool as I thought.

Lord of the Jungle I should add the F6F was not a jet. It was a radial piston powered ww2 fighter. It was the fear of Japanese pilots back then.

The thing that's most amazing about this and the Challenger is that with a few mods these can actually be really competent track cars. They take quite a bit of skill to drive fast, but where they lose out in cornering they make up in straight line speed. With a good driver, they can be hard to beat.

the cooling system of the supercharger is way better than what chevy did in their LT4 engines in the Z06 cooker ! in other words: put that engine in a chevy Z06 and you get a real winner; but perhaps it dont fir in the engine bay. But i think a 466hp C7 Z51 is faster on track ;-)
@jeffwill49238 жыл бұрын
The frontal is area the main issue with the Z06. ZL1 and CTS-V want have that same issue due to larger area up front. Exhaust on Z06 is very close to oiling system also. These larger cars don't have these same issues. GM has claimed a fix is coming on Z06. They did release a aux cooling last yr at Sema. Maybe it will be available on the updated Z06.
@kubanskiloewe8 жыл бұрын
Jeff Will it´s not only the cooling it´s also the low engine bay. In the new ZL1 they used a bigger (higher) intercooler under the compressor. In ZO6´s the inlet air get hot and you loose a lot of power !

Why are you calling that a sports car? Performance car, yes. Sports car, no.
@savagegeese8 жыл бұрын
+bluestudio67 Its a sports car and well beyond that, unless you consider having a top speed of over 200mph a minor feat.
@robertbrody40328 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'd call my Hellcat a "Sports car." To me a sports car is a Miata or a Vette or any car that aims most of its design goals at a target that balances speed and handing. The Hellcat certainly goes after the speed part. Few cars feel like this when you hit the pedal at 70 MPH. But the size and weight are factors that limit the handling to be sure. If you're critical of that, do your homework. The BMW M5 is just as heavy and big, handles about the same and is slower. But I wouldn't call the awesome M5 a sports car either.
@savagegeese8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Brody I dont consider the Miata a sports car as much as I love it, as it is pathetically slow. But I am sure we could argue the merits of what the definition of a sports car is. Is the charger straight up traditional sports car, no but spend some time on the track and street and believe me it is. As a street car in terms of performance it gives you super car levels of excitement and includes usable comfort which many cars don't
@bluestudio678 жыл бұрын
savagegeese I see a sports car in the traditional sense: Purpose built for handling, small, front engine, rear drive and preferably two seats (of course the 911 gets a pass on these qualifications). Most every other hot car is a GT, muscle car or performance sedan. And to the guy with the previous comment: The MX-5 Miata is the PUREST sports car currently being made.
@bluestudio678 жыл бұрын
savagegeese Do you consider a huge AMG 4 door a sports car, too? A jet powered drag semi can hit 200 mph. Definitely no sports car.

Pretty much the same weight as a BMW M5 and the Hellcat pulls the same kind of handling numbers and is FASTER than the BMW. This is a full sized sedan, family car and daily driver that can do 1/4 mile 10's and 205 MPH.
