Well the nsx completely deviated from what the original nsx design philosophy. Went from lightweight everyday supercar, to pigfat overcomplicated hybrid. The new supra is confusing because the most beloved supra was a driver focused gt car with an unkilliable engine, while the new supra is a hardtop bmw roadster. Honestly though the Supra is objectively excellent. It's a lighter and more powerful car. It's just not a toyota, so it urks people you are going to have to pay BMW prices to maintain it. Then there's Subaru. They haven't changed at all in years. if it isn't broken don't fix it. This type ra is just really overpriced for what you get imo.
@sleeper.simulant73275 жыл бұрын
MikeM that’s because the NSX and Supra have actually good engines, the USDM ej257 is a piece of junk. I’m not asking for a upgraded fa20, a JDM ej207 version 8 would have been a EXCELLENT upgrade. Semi closed deck, forged from the factory, crazy responsive equal length header/twin scroll turbo setup, 8000 rpm redline...... it’s already being made for the Japanese market, why not put it in our cars??

The point you made about the intangibles of certain cars is exactly why I love my STi. It isn't the fastest car in a straight line. It's not the most refined (bare-bones interior); has a boy-racer image; is brash and inefficient, sourcing its power from an outdated, underpowered motor (by today's standards). The steering isn't the heaviest, and it does understeer. But, it's analog and tactile--like you said, having a very old-school feel. It may never be as legendary as a Supra or Skyline, or make power as easily as an LS motor car. But I've found that whenever I take it on a backroad with no-one around and can exist in a vacuum with the car - it has plenty of power, and never disappoints to put a smile on my face. It makes lovely sounds from the UEL headers, rips through 1-3 gear with a power delivery from the turbo that feels like a wave is hurling you forward. I haven't been crazy about the rubbery stock shifter feel, but a (kartboy) shortshift kit makes a world of difference--one of the best I've ever driven. In a way, the STi embodies the epitome of slow-car-fast. It's enough to excite, but not too much to endanger. It's short gearing can be tiresome, but can be equally enjoyable when ringing it out to ~7000rpm. Fantastic machine. And excellent review.

You are a really talented reviewer. That was funny, informative, and genuinely enjoyable to watch. I could not swallow the price of the RA, as it was a bit above my budget and I was able to get a standard 2018 STI with Recaros for about $15,000 less than the RA (the prices one can get on the regular 2018 STI now are insane). However, I purchased it for some of the very reasons you touched on...remnants of an analog era, capable AWD, and the driving engagement. The heavy clutch and the heavy steering is just...so great. I'm still learning to deal with the understeer. It's far from perfect, but it's a lot of fun. I really wish my STI had the Alcantara wrapped steering wheel of the RA given how much better it grips when hands sweat.

I'll tell you how tough the awd system parts are.. I just recently drove an 08 Impreza with stock suspension down a farmer's tractor road at 70 mph and had my head hit the roof a couple of times. Two CV axles, one wheel bearing and a speed sensor and it's just fine. I actually had my car buried to the doors at stock levels and still got home.... Ain't no other car in any form will ever be as good as the AWD of a Subaru. I've had three Chevy, three dodges, six fords and one toyota. Now I'm driving a Subaru. 2018 wrx owner here. Look at any dyno chart of a stock FA engine. You can visually see the lumpy tune. Its a really... really... bad tune. Also the dip in power at ~4300rpm is just bad. Tuning them is really one of the better things you can do unfortunately and I wish we didnt feel it necessary to do it. Now lumpy tune and touchy ass throttle aside (seriously 30% pedal input = 100% WOT)... a car this quick and still just commuting to work getting 27-29mpg... kind of nice. Lady on the street but a freak in the bed as it were. Im no racecar driver. I just wanted something kinda quick with enough competence in shit winter weather to get me where I need to go. A wrx/sti is a great option for this.

Good review. I had a 2016 STI, loved it. Just picked up a 2019 STI. Not sure what Subaru did, but it just feels smoother. Lighter clutch, Feels even more planted (I thought the 19's would have a hard ride but surprisingly its much more comfortable and handles even better than my 2016. Yes its only an additional 5 horse but again for some reason it feels like its ready to dance more than the previous. Could it be the Billsteins? Revised ECU and 3rd gear? RA exhaust and intake addition? Something is different about this last run and I think Subaru Heavy Industries understated this one. I'm still in the break in period so I have not punch it yet but its feels very potent and planted. The new clutch feel alone makes it easier to driver in traffic and to punch through gears on open road. This last EJ I must say so far is the business.

I have an 05 sti, so it's just never been worth getting a newer one, due to them having basically the same engine and transmission. But one thing I would like to point out when comparing an STI to cars like the civic r, focus rs, golf f. These cars are all easily tunable to whatever horsepower you desire. It's relatively inexpensive to get a downpipe and ecu tune for any of these cars. So factory power numbers don't really mean much. But the STI has better AWD, better differentials.

For someone who's idea of what a car should be stems from the thought that I can feel the car, that I'm not disconnected by cables and sensors, that I can see without needing things beeping and squawking at me, this speaks to me. A lot of people would just tell you to get an older car. Your final thought is a true attestation of what a driver's car is. Having all the power without feedback to the driver is as good (or bad) as playing a video game. I love the weight of the hydraulic power steering, the manliness and strength of the transmission, and the overall mechanical feel of this car (pre-2018) over the fully electronic, tech-laden cars of today. There are so many artificial features in modern cars which are deemed "adaptive" to cater to a variety of people however that takes away the ability to live and learn with the car as we've done in the past. Driver oriented people make up only a small percentage of the population, and I'm totally behind you with your statement.

Excellent last point. "How much fun is it to drive; how does it make you feel?" is a very important sports car characteristic. To most buyers, that's more important than a Nurburgring time. I'm planning on buying a 2019 ND Miata with the updated engine. It won't be the most hi-tech sports car out there, and a V6 Camry will still blow the doors off it in a quarter-mile, but it'll put a smile on your face and make you a better driver if you put the effort in. It has its down falls but when you look at the older STI’s and compare them to the newer models it’s heartwarming in the sense that they’re all driver cars. They want to be driven hard, they want to be fun and balls to the wall. I’ve driven an older RA and it’s incredible, I don’t know how to stack it up to the new RA but if I had to guess it’s a world apart.

The great thing about the Ascent is that Subaru spent a lot of money developing the new FA24 motor for it. That engine will almost certainly land in the new WRX/STi next year and should be easily capable of making 350hp.

One of the best features of the dashboard is the gauge telling you how many smiles per gallon you're getting. Love it. After owning my 05 for a while, it has been difficult looking for a commuter that doesn't make me feel depressed. Have to make the change at some point, but I feel I'll be dead on the inside.

Albedo I was in Japan a week ago and I saw a bunch of 2016 wrx hatchbacks. I’m not sure if it’s custom or what but it looked awesome
@valdius856 жыл бұрын
That is the problem, at least on the Japanese market. Sedans are considered stylish, hatchbacks are just not in fashion and often downgrade the image - same with Lexus, Toyota and Honda on Japanese market. If someone wants a cargo space they can buy Levorg STI with 2.0l 300 PS. I see a lot of them, often the STI versions. I think it is a really good alternative to WRX if someone wants cargo.
@lucwal676 жыл бұрын
A levorg STI ? Where does this exist ? (not in France, but we don't have the WRX, just the WRX STI) and we don't have it anymore because of shitty emissions laws

Awesom intro! I'm a big fan of yours Mr goose. I love that your honest, you know how to drive and you get the car on a lift and show how it's built even. I'm a 2018 sti owner. Ive wanted one since I graduated high school in 2002, but now, at 34 i can finally afford it. I don't Vape, I don't have an IG or Twitter account, or a fidget spinner. So maybe I'm the exception. You guys mention often how silly New cars are with all the tech and gimmicks. The sti is a great car for someone who wants new car comfort and reliability, but still wants hydraulic steering, manual trans, etc... I know the EJ is old but that motor is a big part of why I fell in love with the sti, the "rumble". I have a kid so four doors and 2018 crash safety is great. It has real AWD and all the practicality of a good daily (except mpg). It's the perfect car for me. I'm so glad I got the "old" EJ and "old" steering and trans in my brand new sti, and I love the suede and leather interior. People dog on new cars not having soul, then dog on the sti for not being not being "New" enough. Sure, I'd like more power and less understeer, but I'm so glad subaru made this car.

Currently you can get these for $35k-$49k used and at that price I think it's a great deal. It's $10k more than equivalent WRX STI models but this is a much more track friendly car so get a track alignment and some stickier tires as you would anyways and this is pretty much whatever you would spend modifying a stock WRX STI to get up to a good track spec.

Great point about the car not liking hanging out in the lower RPMs. I've had a base STI for almost a year now and that's so true. The car feels either sluggish at low RPMs while driving around town in low RPMs trying to save gas, or all out insane unpredictable acceleration at high RPMs. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground. But it's a really fun car of course when you drive all out like that. I just worry that can hurt its longevity.

The funny thing is this 'vaping/riceboys' culture that you showed so well in the intro of this awesome video, it just doesn't exist in Europe at all. All the subaru owners here are usually very down to the earth folks or tech savvy people who love driving these cars in the mountains and twisties. And except for wrx owners, they are all usually mid age+ guys, not kids as the subarus are more expensive here than german brands. It has still the community feeling though, meets and stuff. It's a completely different perspective and as being a Subaru sti owner myself I can't help but wonder how it came for it to happen in America to be ridiculed so much. Loving your work as I can relate to your views so much, keep it up! And do the series from Scott's shop about everyday work as you promised on the 100k subscribers video please! Take care both -J.

Is it just me or is Subaru just really bad at the catering to the enthusiast market right now? It seems like every Subaru fan has to defend Subaru’s sillily decisions like not offering a more powerful BRZ when most cars in its class are available with at least an extra 100hp. Or the STI literally having no major performance changes since the one from 2004, I mean the engine hasn’t even changed once since then. Some may like it, but it seems like the STI and WRX have dropped several performance categories since 04, meanwhile similarly priced cars like the Mustang GT have risen to insane performance levels since 04. So why buy a new STI over one made after 04? Seems like Subaru’s actually losing customers with their decision to not update their powertrains and chassis.
@bb52426 жыл бұрын
Actually, they're just kinda bad in general. I had a '14 Legacy Sport that drank 0w20 like the soda machine at a Golden Corral. Subaru wouldn't fix it. Do they really even care about quality control or dealing with issues with rings? Oh, and the CVT was awful. I wanted to like it, and it was a nice car in some ways, but having to add a quart of oil at 3K miles on the odometer ruined it for me. Totally ruined it. I kept it 20K miles and traded it for another brand, an all-time low record for me keeping a car. I've been interested in WRX models, but the stereotypes and the bad experience with the Legacy keep me away.
@kennyskate556 жыл бұрын
He kind of addressed this in the video. Subaru is not improving the wrx/sti plstform because that cost money and they don't sell nearly enough wrxs/stis compared to all their other vehicles.
@J-Eagan6 жыл бұрын
KennySkate55 my point was, they’re so far behind in the platform that it’s uncompetitive and they are losing out on possible sales because of this. It’s like trying to sell an original beetle for the same price as a modern golf.
@pulledofftheroad6 жыл бұрын
The styling has for sure gone to hell since 2004. Whenever they changed to the bigger body style (09?) was an incredibly poor choice, and axing the hatch was as stupid a move as they could have made
@valdius856 жыл бұрын
Subaru developed the new global platform. Updated its most selling models - Impreza/XV, and now Forester. Forester has seen massive technical improvements. They have two new cars offering soft hybrid and one completely new model for North America. It seems to me that Subaru is investing heavily in the future of the company, starting from where the money is actually coming from. This is the last WRX from this generation, the next one will be based on the global platform. Looking at the company as a whole, the last few years were busy for Subaru. I think the WRX deserves some patience from the fans.
