We traded in our 1997 Starcraft Pop up Camper and bought a new Forest River Rockwood 2280BHESP. After 2 months of ownership we finally got it repaired, fixed and aligned enough to take it on our first camping trip. This is the review.

Ive worked in RV business for 5 years and i worked on Forest River pop ups. Their alot of fun, but very delicate, especially the canvas. Im not in that business anymore but started laughing because everything u said was dead on. However, nothing beats camping in a Forest River. Good company.

We have the same camper. We love it. Ours did come with a cassette toilet/shower combo, but the outside shower is great for rinsing off. We always let the awning down and attach the top two poles before we raise it, then drop the other two poles. The top ones don’t lock, so it just slides right up. A lot easier than trying to reach it after. Lol Happy camping!

Great video! Looking into buying our first pop-up so I’m watching a ton of these, yours is by far one of the best! The only discouraging thing in getting one is all the repairs you had to do on a NEW pop-up.

Thank you so much 👍🙏 once I got caught up it has been fine but it’s a shame that they assemble these so quickly. You can save a lot of money on a slightly used one! Whatever you end up with you’ll most likely have some work to do. Praying you find a healthy one 🙏Happy hunting my friend.

Hello. We have this exact same pop up, same year too. The zip up kitchen pantry that hangs from those hooks above the stove should have came with the unit. Also, the awning is much more stable, especially when windy, if you remove the caps from the bottom of the legs and pop them into the black detents that are mounted on the side of the trailer instead of setting them on the ground like in your video. What we also did for additional storage is mounted a roof top hard plastic cargo carrier to the passenger side of the trailers roof rack. Like you, we also tow ours with a minivan (a Chrysler Pacifica with factory tow package). I recently installed a weight distribution hitch and that helped a lot. Thank you for the link to the bike rack. I just purchased one for mine.

Manoli Kokologiannakis that’s so great!! Thank you for sharing! I thought the pantry was included too but the brochure calls it “optional”, also I learned the manufacturer will toss inside each camper misc. things. The dealer told me whatever is inside is yours. We got three bike racks (I purchased 2 more). We ended up buying a pantry. I did not know the caps came off!!! I love it! I am going to do this today 👌 Great tip!! I have been tempted to buy the storage box for the roof... many used boxes available around here and I usually have space on the van roof. Glad to meet another minivan owner towing such a heavy load. It works and is still the best vehicle for our active family of 5. Thank you for your feedback! Sincerest gratitude 🙏👍 God bless you my friend.

I appreciate the feedback Ron! Also.., if you have a moment, check out my popup playlist: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3_IXn2raduWbrM You'll find newer videos of more severe repairs required. The electric winch lifted the roof all by itself and damaged the frame and roof. I replaced it with a manual winch (much safer and quieter). The roof leaked, everywhere, and was damaging the wood structure. I had to tear it down and seal everything properly. I could have taken it back to the dealer but I did not trust the quality of the work and the amount of time it would take to complete. So I did it myself. I'm not alone in these problems! Sloppy build quality is an issue in the entire RV world. Be prepared! But I will add, we have had amazing fun with this thing!

Just came across this video randomly while looking for ideas for the 2003 Coleman Cheyenne we just bought today from someone and I noticed something... The layout is almost identical! Swap the burners and sink and I think it's pretty much there. Your beds are a size up from ours as well. I guess there just aren't that many layouts you can do in a tent trailer. Awesome video, though. I'm sure I'll find all sorts of stuff to tidy up, although the previous owners kept it super clean! I also have a Thule rack on top, so I'll have to look into buying those bike racks as well!
@sstressfl

Jake Hughes it’s so true. I saw an old popup camper online, maybe 30 years old... same layout 😁 it’s such a small space if you get too cute it can kill usability. So yeah... limited layouts that actually work. Enjoy your Coleman! Thanks for your note.

Awesome video! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this! Our family (My wife and four kids) have always just "roughed" it and slept in an actual tent, but I decided it's finally time to upgrade (hoping I could get my wife to agree to go more often) so I'm a first time buyer and just purchased the 2021 model of the same trailer. We always camp where it could be in the 70's during the day but still in the low 40's or 30's in July (it's even snowed on us as late as July 24th). On our walk through when picking up the trailer it was nice to know some of the things about the trailer I learned from watching your video. When you go to winterize your trailer or any other maintenance you do on the water systems, hot water heater, appliances, what you do to prepare for a camping trip etc. if you'd be willing to film that and show what and how you do it I would greatly appreciate it. What other hacks or things do you do to maximize storage? How often do you use the mattress warmers? How long can we expect the batteries to last running mattress warmers, lights, heating pad for your son etc? I apologize for all the questions but I've never owned a trailer before now. Again, thank you so much for filming this video and sharing it. I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate it.
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 4 жыл бұрын
Hope you're enjoying your camper! Congratulations :) On the winterizing... water is the biggest concern! There is a low point drain underneath. That gets 98% of the water. However, the water filter that is under one of the dining seats does not drain! You need to remove it and dump it or it will freeze and break. Also, the water hose that you can use to spray water like a garden hose? It has the twist end on it... anyway, it will trap water inside if you disconnect the hose after you shut off the water. You need to turn off the water and them open the spray hose nozzle and let the water drain out of it otherwise it will stay trapped inside the 6" long pvc pipe that extends from the camper, freeze in winter temps, and break it! Those are the only two areas I know of that you need to specifically drain (other than the drain valve under the camper). For storage we bought a waterproof box to put on the front of the camper and we get just utilize all the space we can... seems to change each time :) We use the mattress warmers anytime it gets chilly. They are awesome. But only when the camper is plugged in. The battery won't last long powering the fridge or the warmers. Its meant primarily for lights. When we camp we only camp at places that have power and water. Hope that helps! I'm so very excited for you and your family! Don't be surprised if you have to fix some things. Popups are delicate and need fixing sometimes. My best :)

perfect1150 thank you my friend 🙏 wow that is some serious heat! My wife and I have found that if you put a few bottled waters in the fridge and run it on electricity, go to bed, the next day it will be cold. It’s an energy conserving fridge. It takes a while to get cold but it also stays cold for quite awhile even when it gets unplugged. Enjoy yard camping!! Hope you can get out soon but it’s a great way to test all your systems first. Oh and you should consider putting a switch on your winch so you can kill power to it when it’s not in use 👍 Praying for you and your family. May you have great adventures and forge many precious memories throughout the coming years 🙏🤗

perfect1150 Thats very nice to say my friend. And thank you for the prayers. The Lord Jesus is so good, He is the source of my hope and joy in this life ❤️🙏 We don’t get much hotter than 90 here in VT and that’s not often! But even in those temps the fridge gets very cold on hot days but it takes hours for it to get cold. It’s a weird thing. As for the electric winch, the tech suggested putting an on/off switch on the positive battery cable that leads directly from the battery to the winch. That way you can turn it off when not in use so it can’t randomly raise the roof on its own like mine did. Apparently it’s a common upgrade for safety. Like this one! Battery Switch, 6V 12V 24V 48V Battery Disconnect Master Cutoff Switch for Marine Boat RV ATV UTV Vehicles, Waterproof Heavy Duty Battery Isolator Switch (On/Off) www.amazon.com/dp/B07HT19T5V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9nqqFbC3MC429 I converted mine to a manual winch but if I ever go back to electric this is exactly how I would wire it 👍 Happy Saturday! Enjoy your weekend and let me know how things are going 🤗

Thank you for the pointers and honest review. My wife and I just picked up a 2021 version of the 206STSE, and for the most part, many of the items you experienced on your model were not present. However, I did look below the undercarriage and noticed how poorly the wiring had been organized. I plan to take your advice and place some flexible conduit around those wires as well as reorganized the front area near out battery and propane tanks. Other than that, I feel we were fortunate as everything else looked exceptionally well built. However, I'm sure once we get it on the road, we're sure to find more quirks.

So happy you found a really nice camper. I saw a comment from a person who worked in the RV business and he described popups as delicate. I think thats an accurate description. And as long as you understand that these things are not bulletproof - they are designed to be light with simple mechanisms - you won't be shocked when or if something fails. Maintenance is key to long camper life and many many great memories! Enjoy your camping trips! Excited for your and yours!

We have so much fun with this thing. Popups allow for better towing mileage. You can use a lighter tow vehicle (like a minivan or SUV). And it feels more like camping when you're out there in the woods. BUT.... owning a popup, or any camper, comes with a lot of maintenance. And this one has come with a lot of repairs. And as I've learned build quality is very poor in the entire industry. Here's a playlist of the things I've had to work thru with this new camper. I hope it helps on your decision! Great to see your text Marc! kzbin.info/aero/PLB7a9_qObrLj6oL-cEYQFa0bteMk6ZfEV

Michael Byrne Amen on the step latter. I did get a small step ladder too to be honest LOL. In the few trips I took this year, I only set up the awning once only because it seems that I camped at areas where I didn’t really need it. Also I got a a camp chef 2 burner stove and swapped out the hose to a quick connect to the gas on the trailer. Not even using the grill that the trailer came with. Enjoy it! Looking forward to future videos.

@@themarylandweekendwarrior8269 Ha! Too funny! We did similar. My wife is using a portable coleman roadtrip grill but she's still using the propane canisters (the quick connect is a great idea!). We have used the grill the trailer came with and it actually works pretty well! We tend to avoid the inside stove top unless its raining and its necessary.

Great vid! I own a Rockwood HW277, if you think your camper is tall, you should check out the Highwall ! lol We also use a step ladder for set up... Here’s a tip you may find useful. We set up our awning first before raising the roof (only extending the ground poles half way until the roof is fully raised) and we lower the ground poles and then lower the roof, and roll up the awning afterward... of course that doesn’t solve the problem of having to roll it up during inclement weather while the roof is up, but it does make setting up and taking down easier.
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 4 жыл бұрын
John F150Beard thank you so much! I did experiment with setting it up first but it always ended up getting in the way so I have adopted a 3 step ladder as well :) it works for me and I keep the ladder nearby in case I need to roll it back up. Hope you’re having a great camping season! Thank you for your feedback and thoughtful tip!

Normally dont like videos but man, you earned a thumbs up. I love the commentary while opening it all up and all the pictures of wiring, under coating... everything and man that lift motor is ridiculously loud. Ive been on the edge of just completely rebuilding an older vs new. Only makes since if you can buy a sub 5k dollar camper and putting 15-20k into it and having just the ultimate setup. Well with just a double queen size camper, not tje crazy new triple pullout pop ups they have. You showed the underside and it looked like particle board or some compressed type board for the floor, is that the case there?
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 4 жыл бұрын
htownsfinest87 thank you for the kind words 🙏 I think rebuilding/restoring is very rewarding. For me it came down to facilities and time - so I went new. I paid for the convenience. And yes the floor is made up of a bonded wood of some kind. Has undercoating on it. When I first walked inside, I noticed the floor was very solid compared to our 1997 model. He said the old models are like trampolines. But they use thicker heavier wood in the new. It adds weight but provides a better feel and much needed strength. We shall see how it performs over the years 👍 Hope you find what your looking for! Glad I could help in some way.

Really nice review. I always find it amazing how much you have to fix on a new popup. I lucked into a 1 year old pre-owned Forrest River so most stuff was fixed. Awesome , we love our 2018 rockwood 2516g ,we also traded up from a 1996 starcraft , took a peek at hardsides but couldn't justify the price or bang for buck ,our popup is so much bigger than any hardside in that size range plus we can use a much smaller tow rig and it stores inside the garage to .we always liked the canvas or tent feel and not the hardside aka house on wheels feel . We are mostly outside anyway .

Love our 2017 2280BHESP. It been very trouble free for the past three years and nothing but great memories. However, I can certainly see that these are rush built. Inspite of that, everything I've come across are minor issues or improvements and they are on my to-do list. Very happy with it and I'd certainly buy another. It tows easily behind my Nissan Frontier and it's high body lets us get into those tough backwoods places where a regular tent trailer could not go. Thanks for the great and informative review Michael. I'll be making a lot of the improvements that you have.

We continue to make incredible precious memories in ours. I’ve had to do some repairs. And just today I received my new manual winch from goshen. And I have rv sealant/caulk and butyl tape ready to go as soon as the weather is nice. I’m going to re-seal all of the roof and side hardware. Minor leaks from sloppy assembly have started to show up. But once I’m done it’ll be very sealed and I’ll sleep better 👍 Thank you for your feedback. And enjoy your camping season! 🙏

Might want to look into upgrading your tow vehicle. The rock wood fully loaded gvr is at 3800 pounds. A dodge caravan towing capacity is right at 3600 pounds. To with 3 kids two adults and all their gear, you’re probably right at it or past the gvr on your van.

I have to thank you again for making this video. I finally had the opportunity to take my 2208BHESP out for a 10 day excursion through Oregon and Washington and the information I got from your video was invaluable. We spent 7 days with hookups and 3 without. Biggest issue we have is storage. We had 6 people, that for the most part, slept comfortably in this tent trailer in anywhere between 50 and 80 degrees (was really hot last night) with no issues. Most days with power and water hookups and some without. It was a phenomenal trip that we will do again. Two questions....with the camp shower do you just let the water run out or do you try and collect it and how long do the batteries last when not hooked up to power? Thank you again for making this video....it definitely helped me make our trip successful and I can't thank you enough.
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 3 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your new 2280bhesp! Sounds like a great camping experience in beautiful locations. In regards to the camp shower, some locations do not allow run off / grey water of any kind. I think most state parks? But also there is some kind of shower soap that is supposed to be safer for ground run off. But everyone stays away from rivers and lakes with run off/grey water. I have read in places where grey water must be 100% collected people use a kids swimming pool underneath their shower (inflatable might be easier to transport?) then dump it into a grey water collection tank. Our battery does not last long especially if we're spinning fans to stay cool. Maybe a day at best? But we have only been off-grid once for two days. It was brutal lol :) We also bought a 8000 btu portable AC and some heat reflecting blankets from walmart to cover the canvas over the beds on hot days. We sleep and hang out in a 70 degree popup even on the hottest days. Thank you for sharing your camping success with me! So excited for you and your family. Such great memories together. Keep your eye on that electric winch! Mine tried to kill my camper all on its own. I removed it and replaced it with a quiet and wonderful manual winch from Goshen. And also, my roof had leaks. I had to reseal it. My channel has numerous videos that might give you some insight into vulnerabilities. Things to keep your eyes on! God bless you and your family. Enjoy :)

Tyler Wilson I have done that before.... seems like a good method but every time we have taken the awning out during setup we have put a surface cut Into the half deployed awning with the door. We’ve just decided it’s safer and easier to use a little step ladder to deploy and put it away... best for us to keep it out of the way until we’re all set up. That’s our method I’m sure more responsible folks can figure out a better way 👍😀

Great insights, and thanks for making the video. Seems like it's more about being aware of what you're getting into - sales is typically going to push the benefits and "lifestyle" of a pop up, maybe over one that you don't need to do as much "set up"... Cost/value wise - would you say this is still the best option for your family? For ours, that's usually where my justification comes in. Re: your comment on the roof, not sure if you've looked into possible options to reinforce/strengthen, but especially if it's a fibreglass roof - look into epoxy + fibreglass DIY videos. I've seen a few, and they can make a huge impact on strength, rigidity and durability. The cost/effort may be worthwhile? (Depends on your situation of course) Love the insights on the additional work you did - like the wiring, as well as rust and what you dealt with. Suggests to me maybe to buy one of these things from areas that don't salt their roads, or at least, do a thorough check of the underside before buying. Was initially looking at teardrop trailers, but the additional space one gets from these could be totally worth it for the right price and some DIY upgrades.
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 4 жыл бұрын
You might not have seen the video before this one... we actually bought a different one and it broke when we got it home. They immediately worked to fix it but did not have any inventory. The one we have now is the one they had on the lot. It was much bigger than the original purchase. However, it was the same size as our old one and fit our family sooo much better. We threw a little extra cash on top of the pile to make up the difference and we paid far less than retail. It was sold as new. But it wasn't in like-new condition. I agree that sales and buyers are focused on two diff things. It's true when you don't swim in the world of RVs, you are at a serious disadvantage and the sales folks rely on your "starry eyed" blindness. I just read a story about a guy who bought a used popup at a dealership and when he went to pick it up he did NOT do a thorough walk through because he saw all the pics online, was excited to close the deal and wanted to get it home. He said that during the walk around, the sales guy would not lower the camper because there weren't any techs available. So they went into the office and signed the papers. With the deal closed, the camper all connected to his tow vehicle, he drove it home happy as can be. Once home, he opened it and went inside and finally could see that there was a giant dent on the inside of the roof... when he inspected the outside roof, he found a large gash made by perhaps, a falling tree limb. When you read about it, you think "how could he miss that!??" but if you look back and pay attention, you'll see the gentle steering being used by sales (auto dealers are the same). It really is on you to inspect everything closely. And even then you will probably miss something. For example, how can you know your trailer is straight until you tow it? In regards to value for our family, it was the best option that met all of our needs at the time. It still is. Especially since we're towing with a minivan with a 3500 lb tow rating. On flat ground I get 19-20 mpg. In the New England mountains I see it drop to an average of 16. The size. The color. The fact that its tucked low out of the wind when towing makes it sooo easy to pull around. My favorite thing though? When we're camping and before my wife and I close our eyes and I see our 3 kids tucked in and sleeping in their beds. Fills me with joy. And I wonder what memories they'll have, like memories I have of my childhood that seem larger than life itself, from all of these days together, camping, playing, exploring. I have no regrets. I will fix what needs fixing (I continue to do so!) and as the Lord wills, we will continue to camp in our 2280 :) I hope you find the right camper for your needs! I personally don't enjoy the purchase process, but the after is rewarding. Thank you for your thoughts my friend! Happy hunting!

Hi I have just come across your review. I have a couple of questions and an admission. first the questions. Why did you accept the delivery of the pop-up with that condition underneath? Also, you mention using a weight-distribution hitch. I did have an older Viking popup and was told by the manufacturer to not use a weight-distribution hitch. Now my admission. I have in the past bought two used pop-ups. Both have been neither use nor ornament. So what do I know? ;-)

I didnt know the bottom was so bad until I got it home and had time to go through it. BUT, I have a long history restoring stuff and I could tell it was surface level. Disgusting and disappointing, but mostly surface damage. I had to balance the time it would take for me to fix it vs the time to re-engage with those guys and find a new camper. I decided to fix it/seal it and go camping with my family. And yes I do understand when NOT to use a distribution hitch.... its a bit iffy to use one on a lightweight smaller c-frame camper. But the 2280bhesp has a HUGE boxed frame. It is thick. Strong. Meant for heavy loads. I appreciate your transparency :) Thanks for your comments my friend!!

The reason so many RV's and campers come from the factory with significant defects is because the manufacturers do not have the same liabilities as car companies. No " Lemon Laws" for RVs, AND you have to seek redress from the manufacturer of the individual component e g. fridge. Perhaps you should have purchased one in Arizona or California. I think you mean "C.O. detector ".

That looks like a good size for our family of 5. Can I ask which sealed box is in the storage bed and what the bike racks are called on Amazon? Also- discouraging all the problems new campers have. I hear that to often not to be true. Maybe I should go used first and learn maintenance more before thinking about new

Chris Cochrane And It’ll still be the right size even when these kiddos get huge! 😄 Heres the box: Plano 1919 Sportsman Trunk with Wheels, Black www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVCPT4W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Q-WDDbFKP4GQK And these are the racks I bought - the price has gone up a little. Swagman Upright Roof Mount Bike Rack www.amazon.com/dp/B000SL1AEG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_7aXDDb2ARNQB4 I can tell you that after all of my repairs, I haven’t had any other issues. It’s been a joy for all of us. But if you find a used popup that has been loved, I think you’d be very happy too. And there are so many resources available to guide repairs, design, improvements, etc. Thanks for watching my friend!

Great review! could you have taken it back to the dealer under warranty to fix the manufacturing defects? I know all about the RV manufacturing industry. During the busy times of the year they hire anybody and everybody off the street to build all the RV's to meet their quota. No experience necessary.

I could have but if they replace a plastic faucet with another plastic faucet, what good is it? Plus the work we did have them do took 2 months total to complete. It was time to go camping. Thank you for your feedback 🙏

So what was the name of the dealer you bought it from? I'd like to know so I can stay away from them. A lot of those issues (wires and salt) should have fixed by the dealer (IMO). I wonder how much you paid for "Prep"? Good thorough review sir!

I remember when I walked out to see the camper the sales guy was spray painting the side of a frame rail. He said it was just a little fix. I didn’t pay attention until I got home. It was rust he covered up 😕 I was later told that they sell $100,000 rvs out of that place all day. Our little popup wasn’t very high on the priority list. But to us it was! Since then we’ve had friends buy their new (albeit more expensive hard side) campers at the same dealership and have had good experiences. And I agree. The prep was poor. The build quality from the factory’s was terrible, ie, I’m currently resealing the entire leaky roof due to poor butyl tape and caulk assembly. BUT we have made amazing memories in this thing and, Lord willing, I’m looking fwd to a great 2021 season. Our dealer was Country Camper in East Montpelier. Win some and lose some I guess?

Great video, I have a 2018, same model. Didn't get the toilet? My 2 and 5 year old love it, comes in handy at night too. Does the inverter work well? '18's didn't get that feature.

2THXTRM thank you!! With our old camper we started using an outdoor two room shower tent for our porta-potty and changing room. We set it up right against the awning, off to the side. We voted against the potty because we felt storage and counter space was so critical for our family of 5 👍 We haven’t used the inverter yet. We’re always plugged in. It’s a great camper!!

Can you share where you got the bike racks? I believe you said Amazon. I have a Rockwood 2716 with the roof rack but I need the holders for the bikes.

This summer while we were yard camping my son woke up to water dripping on his head. The vent fan started leaking. I removed it and fixed it with caulk that I had at the house. At the end of this season, I found wet wood at the front and back of the roof, clearly evidence that the seams are leaking. I plan to remove all bolt on roof items, clean, and recaulk with proper rv roof sealant, including re-doing my roof fan.
