This camper brings back memories of my mother zipping up a suitcase while having me stand on it because it's like somebody stuffed an entire 26ft travel trailer inside of a 14ft "Suitcase!" This Rockwood popup is THE Perfect Example of "Towing Small & Camping Large!"
Featuring King Front & Rear Queen heated mattresses PLUS a larger U-Dinette slide out it opens up to a spectacular degree when you reach your destination while packing down to a much, much smaller size for towing and storage!
Perfect for tucking into the corner of a garage or barn it's smaller travel size also lends itself extremely well to "off the beaten path" parks with tree branches that may be an issue for larger RVs!

We sold our Jayco 1206 (very much like this camper) in March 21’ after owning it 5 years for a thousand dollar loss. It was well worth the $200/year! The only time our cassette toilet was used was during a downpour in the middle of the night. But this black tank would be so much better! Our family of five has very fond memories of our pop up. Having a king, queen and the large dinette bed is not given enough credit. Excellent buy for a first time rv owner.

Finally! Someone has finally figured out to put the refrigerator right across from the door!! When we owned one the fridge was around the corner and when we would stop to get something to eat it was a royal pain to get to the fridge. You had to clean everything out in front to get to it.

The wife and I are talking about buying remote, off-grid property in Wyoming for camping/hunting/etc... We've been back and forth with a 1/2 ton towable and building a building on site to store it to paying for RV storage and on and on. We are pretty much decided on a pop up with a bathroom. We literally decided today a top contender is the HW 296. And here you are with the smaller cousin. Like it was meant to be. We'll be calling when we're ready. Our first time purchase of an RV is from you guys.

In a place like Wyoming, you're definitely gonna want to have a popup inside an enclosure for added protection from the weather and a little security(mainly against critters that might tear something up). That's definitely a lot easier than building a full-featured cabin, though. It might even be cheaper in the long-run, too. I'd really have to run some numbers to be sure, though.

Just traded in our 2013 Flagstaff HW27KS Pup Tent. I'm surprised this one doesn't have the hard side walls on the bathroom. I personally would prefer the hard walls that we had. Absolutely loved this camper and honestly wouldn't of traded it but we found out that some travel trailers were now 0° rated and that we could camp in the fall in Minnesota and we couldn't pass that up. High Walls are the best tent campers out there. We used that outside kitchen a ton too. It was so handy to have.

We've had Popups with both hard wall and just shower curtain around the wet bath. Currently our 2017 277HW has the wall which we like the best. Our old Popup had the cassette toilet. I found it easyer to dump. I like the color scheme on the newer versions. Just with the gray water dump took the bigger hose fittings like the black water dump. We have the power tounge jack on ours.

We have small 19 ft camper and fully use our toilet, especially during the night. The shower… it depends. If we want a long hot shower, then we go to the bathhouse. If it’s cold or rainy, we take a quick one in our shower. And of course being self contained was a lifesaver during the early days of the pandemic.

Hi Josh ! My husband and I are looking into the "Big brother" of this model ! Except , we are trying to go with a little older model ! Like say , last year's model or even two or three years older.... But not wanting to go to old ! We really like the aspect of the HW for the storage and functionality compared to the TT and regular sized pop up campers ! I'm a very "seasoned" camper ... I've been through them all as for what ever type there is ! And I really like the pop up campers compared to others ! The only 2 things I DON'T like , are the mildew potential on canvas and the fact that you have to set up every time you have to pack and unpack ! Other than that , I love them for space , especially with the slide out ! And yes , we would use the bathroom at night and for emergency issues ! PS ... we would really like to come to your location when we are ready to get one ! We've heard all positive views with Haylett RV !

I’ve had a pop up camper forever. Since 1999. we bought a Coleman pop up camper when Fleetwood was in the folding trailer market. This may be lengthy but here ya go…. I would like to have seen the awning deployed. Ours rolls up in a zipper bag that is the length of the roof. I’m thinking this is the same principal? I’m 59 years young and wish not to ever “crank” the roof on it ever again. I LOVE the power lift on this unit. This is a far far cry from our Coleman. You’re exactly right when you said it has a lot of the big boy camper features in a smaller version. I’ve been watching your videos almost 2 years now, and I so enjoy them. I can’t make a move on a new camper (ie Cougar 22MLS, Micro Lite 25 BSDS) because I would have to upgrade my tow vehicle. Financially I’m unable to do that. But this High Wall pop up may be just what the doctor ordered. Again thank you for all your work, time, research and comedy you Put in your videos. They are Chock Full of useful information to consider. Thanks for you sincerity, and honesty. KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!

Yeah the awning is still pretty similar to how they used to be though they might set up a little bit more quickly. Unfortunately it’s just a matter of time management. So, I have the 2015 version of this camper, and we love everything about it. We would like to upgrade to a newer one however, we DO use the bathroom (for #1’s only lol) but this newer version only has a curtain around the bathroom, while ours has actual hard walls and a door which makes it feel more like a travel trailer bathroom. I also noticed they removed the bottom panel of the slide out kitchen, so the drawer on the left now is useless, (?) ours has an actual bottom panel, so it can be used for storage… and we keep a lot of things in there… ours also came with a hanging wardrobe and a hanging pantry… so, I guess we won’t be upgrading lol but it’s still a great camper!

That is a far cry from the one we rented in the 70's, that's for sure. The very 1st night we got to the campground late, it was raining, no light. Muddy. Lots of swearing. Everything was manual, of course. Looking at a what I'd like for myself, a pop up hasn't been on the list. But this one is pretty cool. I never knew they had slide outs! Still not really on the list, because of bear country camping (I still like the hybrids, if need be, the tents can stay up) As for the toilet question, I keep going back and forth. A cassette isn't totally out, but getting it out might be difficult (stupid body doesn't always cooperate when I need it). But then, it would be more of a night time only thing, so no issue. I would definitely want a toilet in the camper, shower, maybe, or have a set up for the outdoor shower.

We have had a pup for 8 years and never used the wet bath once. But that is a requirement for us. It’s just a peace of mind thing. I think hard wall is better, but until I see it in person, the curtain might not be so bad. I have my eye on this and the HW296. I like the camp kitchen in this, but the extra sofa in the 296. I’m slightly leaning to this, but if they put a camp kitchen in the 296, that would be a no-brainer.
@JoshtheRVNerd
@JoshtheRVNerd 3 жыл бұрын
We've handled them both over the years, but folks REALLY seem to like the camp kitchen on this one. The extra time outside seems to offset the extra space in the 296. This one clocks in a bit lighter/less costly as well which never hurts.

I've used both cassette toilet and a standard camper with black tank. My preference is fully self contained. I hated the cassette because you have a higher risk of the contents splashing on you whereas the holding tank hose almost guarantees (unless you're an idiot or klutz or both) you won't be wearing it, providing the hose isn't worn out. Most camp sites have facilities or know where you can empty them in the first place. The other thing, I don't know anyone who buys these to use them as a full-timer. These are more commonly the weekend warriors or the "working man's vacation" typically a week or 2 max. They're simple enough that packing, take to dump station, and setup is an afternoon task, no big deal.

Always use are cassette toilet for #1, #2 in an emergency. Would like to see Rockwood come up with a better lift system, old style crank is a work out, add an electric motor is Hellashisly noisy. Alaskan camper uses a hydraulic system, come on Rockwood. I wonder why they removed the hard walls for the bathroom? I would of liked to see how the door comes in and out of its position. Great videos always good information even on Star Wars trivia.

Solo camping I'm sure on some occasions the toilet would get used, the shower would probably get used now and again also, especially in cooler spring and fall outings. I might leave that little pass through by the entry door open at night so the friendly campground raccoons can come in and see how I'm doing, I know they love to visit me when I'm outside at night, I'm sure they'd love to pop in and say hi.

Well demonstrated VID you have produced. I own an older, 2003, ("secondhand") HW "Rockwood". I have made a few changes (customized for my personal uses.) One is that I am a Photographer, and the "Old School" sort as well. I have added a "Darkroom Area" with a "Wrap-around" red vinyl sheeting held with "Velcro", that when at night I can chemically develop my film (remember that stuff?) as well as make "Contact Prints". In the "Pass-Through" area (below the microwave in the kitchen area) I have made a "Pull-Through Food Storage Drawer". I now can load food supplies on the Outside ( when the camper is CLOSED) and Pull-Through to use on the Inside when I reach my photo-shoot locations. === I would have sent a photo - however, = that option is Not available here to do.

I like that it is shorter than any hybrid I can find - much better for the narrow and small two-tracks that we typically go down to find the campsites we prefer. Is there a stove hookup on the inside of the camper so it could be used in both locations? Cassette toilet is my preference for those of us that almost never use campgrounds with any kind of hookups, boondocking. Greywater tank would be fine. Need to see more about solar for this unit and solar controllers and inverters, more like the system that Ember uses.

I’m just starting my RV research and considering something like this. Also, the Aliner Expedition. What’s the setup time for a pop up like this? I know Ali eta go up really fast. The lower price for a traditional pop up is attractive. But I have to assume the hard sided Aliner is going to provide better protection from the elements. I’d like to be able to camp 3-4 seasons. With the ability to drag one out into the deer camp woods. Thoughts? TIA

How well does the fabric seal around the frame on the newer popups? I've got an '85 Skamper pop up and it's snaps have seen better days. We don't get a good seal all the way around so bugs can get in (mosquitos) and even if we had an AC unit, the cold air would leak out. We've been looking at upgrading, but we're limited as we've only got a 3500 lb limit on what I can tow with my mini-van. I still like the popups, but with our current one my wife couldn't put it up by herself so she's never taken the kids camping without me. Ideally, we'd love to get something that was no hassle like a hybrid with a slideout, just pull up, drop anchor and we're good but weight and budget are our biggest constraints right now. Thanks for the videos!

When we start marrying soft-sides with hard sides I do not use the phrase "Water proof." Instead I call them things like "Rain Resistant." If the weather starts coming in sideways, then it's possible to get some spritzing. But for common weather patterns they seem to do fine.

Great review Josh! I REALLY like this pop-up. The only thing that stops me from purchasing a pop-up, in general, is that I am always worried about mildew issues as it gets older. That is my ONLY reservation about buying one. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Josh nice popup rig. But IMHO, popups these days have all gone too dang fancy. Now, a REAL popup campers that be the apache Silver Eagle tent trailer pop up. It had real canvas tenting, not that nylon and plastic stuff. Ma and Grandpa got one back in 1964. Paid $645 good cash money it (or maybe pa’s got it in trade the storys a little fuzzy). That camper weighted 600 pounds and when set up measured 14 feet by 7. It had a single aluminum box storage compartment and all the other stuff you took went on the floor. Two full-sized beds pulled out to the sided and slept four adults. Kids and friends slept outside in tents. Now THAT was camping Wife and I inherited that silver eagle in 1971. We put thousands of miles on that trailer when first married. We’re older, and wiser now and our popup days are WAY WAY behind us. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Respectfully, WS
