I review the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club with a manual transmission and the Brembo/BBS/Recaro package to find out whether the RF is better or worse than the soft top Miata. Both are fantastic with the more powerful, higher-revving engine for 2019, along with a slick shifter, and a precise but fun-to-drive character. What would you rather have, the RF or soft top? Also imo the way to go is to get an ND2 club (non brembo/bbs) package for $28k (dealers will discount). Then go to flyin Miata and get their wildwood brake upgrade kit and fox coilovers to get rid of the body roll. They also sell a nice exhaust option if you don't like the stock so you'll be in for $3k in handling/brake upgrades. Then you can get the BBR 220 kit which increase hp to 220 and tq to 175 as well as redline to 8k rpms while keeping it N/A. You can go the turbo route to get 300 hp but the N/A power delivery is so sweet up to 8k redline as it's just linear and screams. The platform is well beyond the S2k now.

The body roll is what makes the car fun driving and it is purposely designed/setup that way, especially when you are taking corner after another and you can feel the car sits from one side to another following your steering movement...

Miatas are made to be a manual. I'm not even sure why they offer an automatic, epically after 30 years now. The NDs look great with the targa top. Can't wait to see what the NE looks like 😉

As a owner of ND 1.5 MX-5 and 718 Boxster, if i confess, MX-5 is more fun to drive. I cant get enough. Everytime i get out of the car, there is wicked smile on my face. Bought two MX-5. First one was red soul color and was gorgeous. Hail storm happened and sold. ☹ Now i have 2019 Metallic White with cherry top. Btw 1.5 version is under 1 ton weight. And it is the intended engine choice of Mazda engineers in first place. It is 7.5 rev even when Mx5 introduced back at 2016. 2 liters motor cought up it in 2019.

Went from a 2015 mustang gt Manuel to this . Nobody else understands this . The MX5 is 10 times more enjoyable to drive . The Mustang is a great car but just not that enjoyable unless your breaking the speed limits times 2.

Same, had the gt 50th anniversary and when it was stolen I bought the Rf, you do feel an obvious downgrade in power and acceleration, but after a while you get use how fun the rf is. I think it does accelerate fast and you do feel it as it accerates. Its super fun to driven and it looks so great and more unique than a mustang which you see every corner. Unfortunately, I had an accident and my car rolled over ;( need to buy another car idk what to buy. One thing that I never liked about the car is the screen which is touch play and you cannot use while driving. I never used it in the 3 years I had my mx5, only used the buttons in the middle

I’ve never driven an MX-5, but I think I understand you. I had a C5 Vette which was, frankly, a very boring drive. I moved from that to a ‘15 Audi TTS which was 100x more fun!! Sure, the Vette was better looking, but that was it. (And you can’t begin to compare the craptastic C5 interior to a modern Audi’s.)

Great video Matt and love this ND in this spec personally! I wish Mazda would bring out a fixed roof coupe of this car, using the same shape of the roofline as this RF, so hopefully you would get much better rear 3/4 visibility.

Just bought a 30AE RF! Owned three soft top Miatas previously. IMO, the ST is the (slightly) better looking car. Sure, the RF most definitely turns heads and is more stunning to the eye, but from a purely aesthetic viewpoint, the simpler lines of the ST look cleaner and smarter. Just my opinion. I suspect a car as tiny as the MX-5 can’t, visually, quite handle the added lines, angles and visual mass of the retractable top really well; they almost overwhelm the car. That said, I’m loving the RF so far! Feels a bit more refined and somewhat quieter on the interstate, which has always been the Miata’s Achilles heel to me. If I were doing very little interstate driving (I’m prob on them about a third of the time), I’d have gone with the ST. But the cars are essentially the same; can’t go wrong with either!

This just might be my second car. One thing that you do that helps any car stand-out is when you have another car and camera riding along side of you and we’re getting that angle and footage of the car in motion. Excellent review of the Miata and keep up the good work.

I liked the review, I would choose the RF personally, I think it looks better, more secure and I wouldn't find it to be a stuff ride because our work trucks are F550s so regardless I won't even notice the "stiffness" and plus I won't have to maintain the soft top

One thing no one mentions in these reviews. Don't get the RF if you are planning any serious track time. It depends on the governing body for the event, but many of them require convertibles to have roll bars. The RF stock bar is not good enough and there is no room for a real one. Get the soft top if you want to track it and install a bar.

You can get a roll bar for the RF, but it disables the roof retraction and makes it a permanent coupe. Not that I’d have a problem with that, but some folks would.

I would get the Club soft top. It’s less than $30k. I can get the Wilwood calipers for less than $1k, and not paying the rear calipers. Se3 the stock calipers and get some money back.

Robert Rosario I got mine same color soft top manual. In February 30k now I owe 19k should pay it off in a year. Don’t get the automatic the automatic just got a recall Mazda automatics is not it’s strong suit. Oh an my Mazda is a club. It’s a program recall so it’s not a big deal for 2019 automatic transmission.But why will buy and automatic transmission. Manual transmission is the way to go with a mx5.

Eliseo Quezada it’s for the 2019 automatic transmission it’s a program recall so it should be no big deal. Why are you buying an automatic transmission. Manual transmission is the way to go with a mx5.

Well considering the Miata was the same from 2016-2018, I'm pretty sure it'll be a few years before they make any new changes. I honestly can't think of a single thing I'd change on the soft top. Like I say in the video, the RF's retuned suspension is a little stiff for my taste.

Great, detailed review as usual. The NDs seem to be great driver cars. I will say though, the RFs look a little oddly short (wheelbase wise) and tall in the middle. Of course the ride height/wheel gap doesn't help. Give me the soft top instead.

William Bellis III ok, after looking at so many KZbin videos, I figured it was more stubby cute than anything sophisticated. The camera in all the shots is distorting it. You need a large format still camera to show this car. It isn’t round and center heavy. It has a really long hood and is quite flat and low. In person it impresses. I think modern digital camera setups just distort everything

How bad is the buffeting? I’m thinking about a new 2022 RF GT manual but wondering about the trade off if I traded my 2008 PRHT,. Does the RF design have too much wind buffeting with top down, would it make you want the soft top or keep a PRHT?

I must get one of these in Grand Touring with the nice Automatic and cooled seats so I can have my hand free for talking on the phone with the roof closed. ;) Just teasing. I would love to have one but our Roads are absolute RUBBISH that you have to Super Cross going anywhere to avoid the missing road holes and bumps everywhere. Back in the day a hole or imperfection was fixed with in a week. Now it’s just normal and live with replacing your suspension components more often.

Yeah there's definitely some buffeting, but it's not too bad with the windows down. Like I mention in this review, I like the soft top better because it's lighter and feels flatter in corners. Club or Grand Touring comes down to your personal preferences as far as how much equipment you want. I'd do the Grand Touring simply because it's the only way you can get the blue color and it's barely more expensive.

I hear a rattle in the RF with the top up as you go over bumps.. it that due to the chassis not being rigid and it's cowl shake/rattle or is it your hardware/something else you put inside the cabin?

It's my camera mount, it sometimes rattles and the extra cowl shake of a convertible like the Miata exaggerates the issue.

one of these pulled up next to my 25yr old probe gt ..I didnt know what the heck it was from the side view.....I thought maybe a baby supra or the bmw version with that long nose..anyway the dude floored it at the light and I did same...it got abt a car length ahead of me off the line but it couldnt gain any more than that....raced up to abt 70 then we backed off...ive always felt my car was running slow as molasses so i was surprised to see it stay that close to a modern car since i was hauling 200lbs extra weight...Ithought the miata would have smoked my clunker...yeah i got a v6 but mines stock and only 160hp...both cars are pretty light though

This is another car in which Mazda should be applauded for, in the same regards that one would applaud Chevy for the 2020 corvette because of how they got it right. And, getting it right, apparently, is not that easy. (looking at Supra and new NSX and new Camry (the fake vent-alot-sedan)).... (new civic has a lot of fake vents too but less in the base model and the age demographic for civics are 20 somethings and teens anyway)....

Omgosh wrxfanman. I am about to sign for a new rf club in machine gray.... i was considering to sell the BRZ limited performance package 2017 due to a fantastic trade in deal + someone in my family corporate pricing offer. I bought the BRZ because of you. I have the choice tomorrow morning to make the deal, but was worried about giving up the best car i have owned. Well, fortuitous concourse of circumstances: i think I will sign. Single car owner, NY winter driver, even toward Canada this year possibly. Wrxfanman does it again with me. Amazing timing!! (No Brembos or alcantara however, that adds a few thousand, sadly out of my range)

Well yeah but dont forget that cars are really getting expensive over the last 3 years in general.. + inflation is ramping up. Im not saying I want to pay 40k for it but considering its pretty much alone in its own little market they can afford raising the price. Dont forget that the cult we can see about the NA is starting to form around the ND and thats what Mazda wanted from the start, get this car to enough people on the cheap and when racing them becomes popular jack the price up slowly so they can actually make some money.

The definition of several is "more than two but not many" so the word several is correct...as for the weight, there are various reports saying different numbers, so instead of pretending I know exactly, I give a range so that it's not misleading. Mazda claims one number, people that actually weight them claim another.

I'd go for the hardtop only because I now live in in an Apt complex and it's California, you never know if some nut case is going to knife the softtop out of spite. Also tree sap, and harsh weather here with the heat. I'm still debating on manual with LA traffic, stop, go, stop go...will see.

GTI is the best all around car possible. Beautiful interior, seats, classy. And it is way more powerful than VW advertises. If you dont need storage, MX-5 always. I just made that decision... today lol

GTI is way faster and obviously a much much better all rounder. It’s not even close in that regard....but in terms of fun to drive, the current gen Miatas are a blast. One of the best drivers cars in any price range. Honestly one of the most fun cars I’ve ever driven. I daily a 19 SS 1LE for reference, have owned a Fiesta ST, and a BRZ. GTIs are great cars, but for just pure driver enjoyment, Miata all day. The GTI DSG is great. The miatas auto is awful IMO. The manual is fantastic though

I absolutely love my NB, but my back is destroyed lol. maybe some aftermarket seats will help but my bad back definitely wants a tahoe or something. Never getting rid of my NB unless one day I can afford an ND. I'm so glad mazda didn't screw up the ND.

I actually really like that little car and I am sure it's a lot of fun to drive. Unfortunately, I don't think I can ever change to something that slow, relatively speaking. That's not to say the car is slow in general it's just when you are used to so much more power you don't want to go so far backwards. It's kind of a curse to be honest. Would love to spend some time behind the wheel of one though, and I'm sure it would bring smiles.

Joel Remland I like having the newest technology and safety, and I think the ND handles better and for 2019 has a much more exciting engine than the NC. The NC is still fun though, I enjoyed the one I reviewed many years ago.

Can you open or close the top while driving? I mean what if you're on a freeway with top off and it started raining, do you really need to stop to close the top?
