I own a newer 1x Straggler - bought based significantly on Path Less Pedaled reviews. Years later, this review was really spot on. I wanted a gravel bike that approached CX race geometry as close to possible - train on the straggler, race on the Kona Jake. Absolutely nailed it. The straggler is a snappy, nimble responsive bike. The biggest difference besides being steel is the lower bottom bracket, which I welcome. I ride with 700x44 Riddlers, abuse the bike, and it handles marvelously. The ONLY think I dont like is those horrid horizontal rear drops.

Five years later and I'm still rewatching your reviews. This speaks to your relevance to cycling and enjoying the ride. I'll hopefully buy a last new bike before i can't ride snymore. I do love nice steel bikes. Thank you for your perspective on non racing bikes. I'm even considering 650b wheels!😊

I have an older Crosscheck, which I loved, aside from the toe overlap...as a similarly sized rider I know you understand! Mine was a 52 and several times in tight jams the overlap really got me into trouble. I ended up putting a Crust Clydesdale front fork on it and now it’s my de facto nimble cargo bike! 🙂

Awesome review. I ended up getting the Cross Check instead of the Straggler and I really think people should consider it despite it having rim brakes and bar end shifters. It's a great value relative to the Straggler unless you know you absolutely *need* discs. I sold my last cross-like bike that had discs and have no regrets. I am finding the stopping power to be great and I kind of fell in love with the bar end shifters even though I thought I would hate them. I'm throwing this thing down single track while also commuting regularly and it just does everything so well. I think "Monstercross" is really the best way to describe these bikes!

Hi Max. I doubt between a Crosscheck and a Straggler. Are the brakes the only difference, and the price of course:) The weight? thnx.

I really like my cross check. Bought it in late 2015, I think, as the full bike. I took it on a ~300 mile trip across the state and it served me well hauling all my camping gear - there was a pretty sharp rock on the trail at some point that took out the rear tire and tube but luckily I was close enough to a major city and was able to patch it up and get a new one on by the end of that day - ready to continue on in the morning. I really like it. If i didn't ever do camping trips, I'd probably want something lighter but the cross check is a great in between that I can take out for touring but also cruise around town with ease.

@@matthiaskenton7862 I sure do...it’s a keeper, but 700c wheels means any falls are from a little higher up(if you don’t mind,lol). Sweet color, completely modifiable frame comp. FYI, I got a 58 frame and I’m 6 feet exactly, it’s pretty tall...just fits an inch under my groin area without shoes. After doing some research finding a cool used Surly is very hard to do so I went brand new never looked back.

Great review as always Russ, very spot on ❤Straggler’s always been my dream bike and when I had the chance to get my hands on a frameset at a super cheap price, I couldn’t resist but pull the trigger on it even though I’m 5”8 and the frame is size 56 (700c variant) I discovered to my surprise after I change to 35mm stem and 0 off seatpost it is the most comfortable bike I’ve ever ridden. I can get over the fact that I don’t have the stand over clearance but hey if it’s comfy when I’m in the saddle that’s what matters. I use it everyday on my bike commute running front rack and handlebar bag and pannier when I’m off to my weekend long ride. Best purchase I made 100%

I loooooooooove my straggler! but I ride a lot in the Los Angeles area, but not afraid to take it on the gravel, so smooth compared to all of my other bikes I have used in the city. I think of you guys all the time because it isn't as fast as my other bikes but way more fun and confident traversing through the rough streets of LA. (also, Colorado Springs!) love you guys!!!!!

I got a cross check a few months ago and it’s my funnest bike! It’s capable of bunny hops and smashing commutes. I have a Jones h bend bar on it so I’ve dubbed it the land cruiser since I’ve taken it almost everywhere in Boise. The positioning is chill but sporty for me. For me the bike seems to tell you to just ride it wherever on whatever. It’s the best!

Looks like you reviewed the Straggler 650b. I got the Straggler when it first came out and there wasn't a 650b option. I liked it well enough with the stock 700c wheels. But I'm short, so I decided to convert to 650b, upgrading the rims and other components in the process. It's now my favorite bike. I am running Compass Switchback Hill (48's) and WTB Horizon (47's) with plenty of clearance. I had concerns about running 650b's on a frame designed for 700c, but they were unfounded. The bike rides great. If I were planning to run smaller 650b tires (eg, Compass Loup Loup Pass - 38's), maybe I would have problems with the frame designed for 700's. In that case, I might go for the Straggler 650b frame out of the box. But if you're going for big 650b tires, don't hesitate to get the 700c frame and build up with 650b rims. You will have plenty of clearance. I'm having a blast with mine.

How did the 50cm frame fit you, Russ? I think you’ve said you typically ride a 52cm on most bikes?
@GrahamAtDesk
@GrahamAtDesk 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for doing this one Russ (I'm one of the Straggler owners who said it'd be really interesting to hear your thoughts, as a benchmark). I was quite surprised at just how much more lively you seem to have found it. I've basically been mountain biking on gnarly rocky routes on mine, and while I was definitely underbiking the frame never felt like it was struggling (it left that to me). It's capable for so many different purposes. If you've got any less-tall tyres knocking about I'd recommend fitting them briefly before you return the bike. Lowering the trail (relative to when Knards are fitted) by fitting 700x35 turns mine into a seriously nimble (and fun) road/dirt road ride. It speeds it up a fair bit too. Loads of fun.
@PathLessPedaledTV
@PathLessPedaledTV 6 жыл бұрын
I think coming off of some touring and gravel bikes that are focused on stability, it seemed livelier. Actually playful in the front might be a better word. I don't think the frame material itself is very springy but the handling was fun.

Thx for the review of the Straggler. I agree with your comments regarding the livelier feel over the Space Horse. I tried both of them along with the Vaya and have decided to go with the Vaya because of the geometry and fit. I also like the gear ratio on the stock Vaya over the Straggler or Space Horse. I've been commuting on a Straggler for more than a year and it's been a solid and smile inducing bike to ride. Since I have a number of trails between me and work, I often take trail detours on the way home and have loved every minute. I've also ridden it on really technical mountain bike trails, and though hair raising at times, the bike has proven to be bulletproof. I do agree that it can get a little squirrelly when loaded up. On days where I've had larger loads, I've really noticed how it harms the handling. But if I'm not trying to set new Strava PR's on the way to work, it isn't too bothersome. All in all, it has been one of the best bikes I've owned. I love my Straggler!

re: tire clearance, fwiw my partner has a 50cm straggler and has 650x50's in it. They're the O'Donnelly tires that have fairly small knobs, and it's necessary to deflate the rear tire slightly to install it in the dropouts, but she's been running that setup for a while now with no issues.

Spot on, Russ about how handling is affected especially when you have a front load. I have 2 Stragglers (700c and 650b), one in flat bar and the other a riser bar for more handling control. Steering becomes heavier, sluggish, takes more effort - all comes to fore if you're on drop bars. Just waiting for the downtube shifters to arrive and will be going back to dropbars on the 650b. And may well take out the front rack and basket in the process.

I’ve loved my “hospital foam green” Cross Check since 2014 for all sorts of mixed terrain and gravel events. I don’t recall what chainring was on it originally, but I’m quite happy with a 36 x 46 with a 32 or 34 in the rear. I’ve been creeping upwards in tire size, and I really like the Continental x 42mm I’ve had on for a while. For my body dimensions and flexibility, I wish the top tube was a little shorter, and the canti brakes are better for aesthetics than stopping, but I’ve been quite happy overall.

Have a Surly Cross Check with a Ritchey carbon fork and a 46/30 GRX crankset. Almost perfect, but kinda looking for something with disc brakes, a little lower BB, and a little longer chainstays. The Straggler has the discs and lower BB, but still short 425 chainstays. What else might fit the bill? Maybe an All-City Space Horse?

I converted an All City Macho Man Disc to the Stagler (after a wreck). Went from a very forward cyclocross geometry to a more relaxed comfortable ride. QQ. What is your take in the rear drop out? I am in a love/hate position with it. It is robust and stable but the two pins makes any tire change (especially trail side) a huge pain. The realignment is alway hard to get perfect and I have even have problems with heavy torque shifting the wheel into the chain stay. Thanks for the comments.

Russ with this video being 3 years old I do not know if you'll see this message. First thanks for the commentary. I'm considering looking for one of these bikes used as I like the 2X option and the current Straggler is 1X but like you I think the gearing is much too high. @TimCalvin
@TimCalvin 6 жыл бұрын
Forgive my sketchy math, but isn't a 27.5 x 2.1 the same as a 650b x 54? Or do we switch from 650b to 27.5 once we're over 2" in width? Also: from the shot you posted of the tire clearance, it looks like there's at least a couple of mm worth of space in there- if you're not running fenders or riding in the mud. No?
@PathLessPedaledTV
@PathLessPedaledTV 6 жыл бұрын
It's the same, but the convention is to use 27.5 when speaking in inches. It's how its marked on the tire, so that's what I'm going with.

650b is a French road Tyre/wheel combo. MTBs historically had 26" wheels, but this was the size of the cruiser bikes wheels *including* the Tyre. 29ers are so called (even though they are 700c road size) as by using the cruiser way of determining size they'd be roughly 29 inches. 650b is roughly in the middle so called 27.5". It's all a bit of a kludge(?) To be honest!

The 410 mm chainstays on this bike are seriously short, 15mm shorter than the MS in size 58. Is there room for fenders with the knards on? I like the current setup with the 1x apex better. The only thing preventing me from buying this or the MS is the QR axles. QR and disc brakes don't mix IMO. I get a lot of rubbing on my current QR/disc setup and I want to avoid that in the next purchase.

I don’t quite remember if it had tire clearance for fenders, but I would be surprised if it didn’t. Yeah, MS dropouts are weird. That said, the Polyvalent has QR and I’ve been digging it. And the Vayas we have ridden for the last 5 years were disc with QR. So for me, not an absolute deal breaker.

Got a professional fit and they agreed. My saddle is almost all the way down but the reach is perfect. I don’t have clearance but comfortably get on and off the seat even in emergency stops just by leaning the bike and standing over the top tube.

I can't find the bike I want. (and this one doesn't seem to be available any more). I want a drop bar bikepacking bike, 27+, with the NX 12 speed. Ideally, it would be NX *24* speed (2X), to give me more range - I currently have a very old 26" MTB with a huge 580% 3X range, and even THAT doesn't have enough high gear range for the road. I'm not very impressed AT ALL with the pace of drivetrain development.
@rustymcrobot
@rustymcrobot 6 жыл бұрын
agree with the gearing. i built mine with a 48/32 sub-compact praxis up front and a sram 11 spd 11/46 mountain cassette on the rear and its absolutely fantastic. i tour occasionally on it and the lower gearing really helps out in that regard. funny enough, big apple 2.0's fit on the front and back of my 700c straggler, although just barley (they run small for their advertised width). they're my commuting tire of choice. otherwise I run 43 gravel kings. i'm looking for a good off road 700c tubeless tire to put up front, something with large knobs to compliment the GK in the rear, if anyone has a suggestion.

so im using sram rival brifters (road), which are incompatible with the 11 spd sram gx derailleur (mountain) because one uses "exact" actuation while the other using "x-act" actuation (or something to that extent). their ratios are slightly different and don't talk nicely with each other. it turns out the 10 speed sram gx derailleur and sram rival brifters are on the same kind of actuation. so i use the 10 spd gx long cage derail on my 11 spd 11/46 sram cassette with rival 22 brifters, no problem.

your other option is to put an inline pull adapter between those brifters and the 11 speed cassette. i found one that claims to work but haven't tried it

When I called Diamondback about the Haanjo/Haanjenn 3 the rep told me that the website wasn't as accurate as he would have liked and that both bikes actually can take larger tires than the 40c tires listed as well as 650B tires. Raleigh said they haven't tested the Willard 2 with 650B tires but I have seen pictures with Willard 2s running 650B. The Cannondale Topstone Sora is just being released and these 4 bikes makes the best values I can find for around the $1000 mark for aluminum framed gravel bikes. The Topstone does have the largest bottom bracket drop of these but the reps are pushing it as 650B compatible. The Fuji Jari can be had for under $1100, even sometimes under $1000. I think the Salsa Journeymen are the best value if you want 650B out of the gate but aside from that they are a bit on the heavy side for aluminum bikes and you have to pay as much as a Jari for Shimano Sora while the Jari has Tiagra. All these bikes run 46/30 chainrings.

The lever should be on the nondrive side and when tightened it should be pushed towards the rear of the bike. That way if you happen to snag it on anything it will not come undone.
@HollyBoni

On a disc brake fork I prefer to put the lever on the drive side, much easier to use without the disc in the way. A lot of thru axle forks have the threads on the NDS and the lever on the DS.

Thank you for shots with tire clearance! Would it be possible to give actual tire width? Rim width would be nice too but those are easily found online. Quick shot of the caliper with numbers would be great. I had Knards on several setups (650b, 700c and fat 26) and as with any other tire their width is dependent on the rim. Knards in 700c were mostly measuring to true 38mm in my experience.

Yes, I had them close to ~42mm as well. Plus most tires will balloon a bit more if setup tubeless, etc. I don't care much for that level of details in PLP reviews, only want to see numbers: actual width of the tire, shots of clearance at fork, chain and seat stays and how much space at the yok/distance from tire to seat tube

I had a 62cm Straggler for a few months. I really wanted it to work for me, but sadly, that design just doesn't scale up well. It turns into a noodle at that size. The long tubes combined with a fairly high power output (necessary for someone my size)... It was pretty noodly. I also found the long wheel base limited maneuverability for me. It does make a great commuter/grocery getter, but it seemed sluggish to me.
