Very awesome Scottish arming sword and even a Viking would be proud to wield it! You can tell its design was heavily influenced by early Viking age swords. It is balanced like my sword I use in my videos on my channel but a little lighter so I am sure it will cut perfectly.
@MorrisonScotch6 жыл бұрын
The history of this stuff is pretty much way off. The designs are from the islands off the coasts of Scotland. The first swords were formed in kelp kilns where the people harvested kelp to make soap, and other various products. The hilt design is from what kelp looks like in the water. The weapons was very high grade carbonized from the ash of kelp. Both sides of the island called these island's the old castle. Where the actual Odin and Thor ruled from.

Which islands are you referring to? The Northern Islands, like the Shetlands and the Orkneys, or the Western Isles between Galloway and Ulster? The Northern Islands were first settled in very ancient times, long before the Vikings. The Orkneys were ruled for some centuries by Viking rulers but the native population remained. The Shetlands, being closer to Northern Scotland, were ruled for a shorter period by Viking rulers. Both the Shetlands and Orkneys returned to Scottish rule shortly before the time of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Weapons developed there would have been influenced by both Norwegian designs and Scottish ones. The Western Isles were long independent and, while there were Viking settlers, were mostly settled by the Gaelic Irish who migrated through them to Galloway and the Highlands in the late Roman and early post-Roman period to form the Highland Scots. Scottish Gaelic is very close to Irish, and could even be cinsidered a dialect. Music and other aspects of culture are obviously very similar. The earlier original people of Scotland were the Picts, who battled the Romans and of whom we know little. Certainly large numbers of modern Scots are Pictish descendents. Picts were probably related to the early settlers of the Orkneys and Shetlands.

The fact that there is Norse sword influence in the design may be reflected in the name "Caithness". Caithness is the most northern county on the Scottish mainland and is just south of the Orkney islands. Chalk me up as another Albion fan. I've got a friend who has a pair of Vassal Falchions and they handle like a dream. Quite elegant, especially for a sword pattern that was considered more crude than a long sword. I'm currently working on saving up for one of their Norman swords as that type of blade would have been carried by my ancestors at Hastings (in fact I've managed to trace my lineage to the Brooks clan which some sources cite as being key to providing William the Conqueror with the manpower he needed for his invasion of Britain and acquitted themselves well enough to go from being fishermen and farmers to minor nobility as a result of the campaign).

I hear you (cost him closer to 1200 each since we're in the U.S. and the exchange rates apply, but basically same price) but he's a huge fan of falchions and liked his first Vassal enough that he bought another: one to pass down to a favored relative when he dies and one that will be buried with him. He's a bit of an odd fellow.

Good heat treating with modern steel is impressively flexible. There's always a fine line to tread between tempering too much and losing hardness or leaving it too hard and brittle. Walter Sorrells posted a video called "Steel testing for Knife makers", where he takes a pipe wrench to a test blade and tries as hard as he can to snap or even bend it. I don't think your sword is in any danger.

swords with very short handles often feel very lively. it's something to do with your hand almost being sandwiched between the guard and the pommel, there's just more surface contact between the hand and the handle, and the slight amount of 'squish' you get from the flesh on your fingers is reduced too, making the blade itself respond better to your hand movements. there's probably technical terms for what i just said, but this comment comes just from what i've found while testing swords like this.

(overswing didnt help. massive, massive overswing)

I love my albion, but there are 3 cons: 1) personally I find the blade to flexible for thrusting and slightly to light (POB) for cutting 2) the blade came irrespective of my request blunt like a butter knife and the steel is really hard to sharpen (which proves its durability) 3) they rust very easily (compared to other high carbon steels) and especially at the guard, there spots which are hard to clean due to their accessibility, you also see it in the vid when he points the point to you
@edi989210 жыл бұрын
Abel Pisco True, you seem to speak with a lot of experience. Regarding 2: since I live in Europe the sword came to me via several stops, thus I did not want to return it for a matter as trival as sharpening. The cleaning problem I mentioned comes from the fact that most albions have a gap between guard and blade. Also the spot between leathergrip and pommel is difficult to polish.
@edi989210 жыл бұрын
Abel Pisco I didn't dare to use a mechanic sharpener, as I have not much experience. I used sharpening stones like for Katana and japanese Kitchen knives. I can sharpen a pocketknife in 15min but one Albion takes hours. This gave me the time to see my errors and correct them and of course an impresssion how it must have been back then.

As with all things in life, you get what you pay for. You could buy a boat load of inferior stuff, sure, but why when at the end of the day you could have owned the best? It always confuses me when I see people with thousands of dollars worth of cheap things complaining that they could never own something expensive. I'd go for one if I could justify a reason to when you can't really use a sword for many utilitarian cutting tasks.

+Battle Brother "Normal" steel like stainless doesn't work for swords - all good swords to my knowledge are made of carbon steel. If you're going to pay a large sum of money for a sword, you should accept that there will be work and care involved to keep it in good condition.

Dynasty Forge makes some ones that I've heard are pretty good for around $300, as well as Windlass (who generally make good swords at that price range) and the Hanwei Tinker Pearce Sharpened Single Hand Sword.

so this blade vibrates more the worse your angle is? wouldnt that make it the perfect practice sword since you can feel how much you fucked up?

honestly, machetes behave similarly. you can really feel when you screw up with a latin style machete, which is really a toolified version of the cutlass.

The way it "Sings" would probably be a big giveaway on how your form was shaping up too. I would imagine it would sound like a stepped on cat if you were off.

People tend to put a lot of emphasis on "hand crafted" but they don't realize there is a lot of work going into the process and even then the material always has a flaw in it in some way because even the best black smiths make human errors. Machines they can actually make better precision work than the best black smiths sometimes and a lot of times that's very important if you want to make a high quality item.

Hey man could you make a video discussing the use of a shield on horseback. Always wondered how it was possible to use one effectively while maintaining balance in the saddle while simultaneously engaged in close quarters combat just seems like it would get in the way. Please make the vid

Looks damn fine ;D. A man must be able to trust in his sword.

Machine vs. hand forged is a great debate, but i want everyone to think of one point. If the Medieval sword smith had modern equipment, do you think they would have used it? DUH. Of course they would have. Technology is not a bad thing. Why use Iron if Bronze was good enough? Why use steel if iron was good enough. get my drift? Old ways are NOT always better. PERSONALLY I appreciate a hand forged sword for the aesthetics, individuality of the blade and the art involved. I have owned an Albion Crecy in the past and it was a wonderful sword! I currently have my eye on a Mainz Pattern Agustus Gladius at the moment. Love them. Machine made or not.

when you're spending a thousand bucks on a blade 20 bucks for a custom wrap is nothing :P Seems like a great blade, Ill definitely be looking around for an Albion.

I'm from Caithness! The weather sucks. grey grey grey grey grey. WIIIIINDDD!!!! But i wanted your opinion on an oakeshott type 18b. It looks really nice, I like the narrowness (Rapier fan here) and the one i'm thinking of picking up has a really nice wire sound grip. what i want to know is how would it perform.

The balance is amazing I want more Albion swords been saving up for another one I wish they would hurry up and make scabbards! Is there any where you know of to get a scabbard for one?

Could you comment on the weird cross-guard lighstaber version from the new Star Wars trailer? It's looks like a longsword, but it also looks like a useless and dangerous contraption.
