Here in the northern United States, I have found that the way to stave off the after Christmas Blues is to be mindful that we are still actually in the beginning of WINTER SOLSTICE---which only began on the 21st day of December! I eventually get around to taking the beautiful birds & shiny baubles off the tree, store them away---then leave the evergreen tree to silently shine on its own---with its tiny golden white lights! It's presence is a reassuring comfort for one who lives alone! The evergreen swags: with berries & ribbons of varying shades of red, above mirrors and artwork, are left to stave off the colorlessness of winter. It is also a way to honor the old Celtic tradition of keeping the "ever-green" throughout the living space---untill Spring appears to fulfill the promise of renewed life! Candles and music are essentials to soothe my mood---ALL through the year, but especially during the winter months, whether Celtic, classical, or soft jazz! This Christmas I did something somewhat out of character for me. I was on KZbin and ran across A Charlie Brown Christmas, by the Vince Guaraldi Trio! As I listened to the lively, upbeat music of Linus & Lucy I was of course reminded of my childhood, and the video of all the Charlie Brown gang dancing and playing musical instruments, and the beagle's ears flying with every movement---every time I watched it it made me LAUGH HYSTERICALLY, like a child that I was not allowed to be growing up. Then I delightedly discovered that much of the music on the CD was also very classy and soothing jazz, with some of the very old Christmas favorites, like The Christmas Song, Greensleeves, and My Little Drum. It also includes Beethoven's beautiful Fur Elise, done in the classic style. I purchased it, and it became one of my go-to cd's of the holiday season! And that prompted me to search for Nat King Cole's cd: The Christmas Song---which I also purchased! So many familiar songs and voices, that years ago, made Christmas---CHRISTMAS! LOVED your video! It was heartwarming! Thank You!

@pamelaprivette53612 жыл бұрын
@@thetartantopiaryI have just in the last couple of years---started thinking of the Winter Solstice as a way to lessen my "After Christmas Blues". Afterall, from the ancient of days: it has been and will always be---the time to celebrate the winter season---I have always loved the winter season! On a subconscious level many have learned that because CHRISTMAS comes in winter---and Christmas comes but once a year---that when Christmas is over, IT IS OVER AND WITH IT: our chance to feel loved and accepted by certain family members important to us, who judge and reject us. For too many people---they feel that their WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY has, once again, passed by! And the let down is depressing. For me, winter is a time of introspection: we as humans must make the connection within ourselves---in order to make a meaningful connection with our family and friends---that are in our lives for a reason! We must come to realize that we are spiritual beings longing for a spiritual connection with each other. Some will sit down to Christmas dinner and overfill their stomachs---because they can't fill their desire for connection! I seriously think that society's demand for INHUMAN PERFECTION from ourselves and each other---has helped create the overwhelming "let down after Christmas"! Some individuals and families are miserable and full of anxiety as the holidays approach---and can't wait for it to be OVER! One of the ideas I have for staving off the After Christmas Blues---is making sure to schedule something for DEC. 26TH---something special with a special friend. Perhaps: Dressing up, going out to a small, secluded, upscale restaurant: the Christmas lights and decorations still up---having a simple unhurried dinner to just catch up---from the time we may have missed with each other, going in different directions during the Christmas season. It's like holding onto the magic of Christmas before it's gone for good---and we're ringing in the NEW YEAR! Actually, the winter season, to me, is just making a SPECIAL OCCASION out of EVERY LITTLE THING that makes winter special! Winter itself, to me, has it's own special magic! Like you said: making some simple, delicious cookies, putting them on a beautiful plate and enjoying them with a complimentary hot drink---and even better if the moment calls for it: share it with someone you love and truly connect with! It becomes a special occasion in itself---there is magic to be enjoyed in every special moment!

Happy January Mary! Yes, I agree it's so sad to put away Christmas. I wait till about Jan 7th and then do what you do.....play beautiful Music while packing it all away; Frank, Dean or Soft Jazz or even Christmas Music ( as it's so happy). During January, its my time to ORGANIZE closets, drawers and PURGE as I am so busy the other seasons with the Gardens / Landscape. Its also my time to go through my Decor Magazine on rainy days that I may have hoarded during the year and donate 90% to my Library or to my friends. Try to read some good English Historical Fiction Books; stories similar to Jane Austin's. Your HOME is STUNNINGLY decorated and should be included in QUINTESSENCE'S channel or in a book. (My decor style is like yours.) Maybe you could produced YOUR very OWN DECOR BOOK from photos from your lovely home!!!! I always enjoy your channel...reviews of the best books! Thank you for taking our breathes away with lovely ideas...Happy New Year!

About five years ago I decided I needed a good silver tray. I began looking and buying online and in flea markets, was up to about 6 and still not feeling the 'right one'. Then one day in an atique shop I found a huge very heavy tray on three ornate feet, truly the 'one' and the lady did my a good deal , I got it for 100 euros instead of 250 ! I love it. Since then I actually bought two more, WHY, no idea, just a habit. I recently found a very big partially pewtered brass tray, the kind they used to set on hot coals and place food on in arab culture. Not sure which country, maybe Syria. I recently found two tall brass lamps made from maybe candle holders at one point, they are really old and were sold at auction as from Syria. Most of the stuff that day in auction was Asian or Arabic. I paid the embarassingly silly price of 30 euros the pair and I made them matching tiny lampshades from an old saris trimmed with some couture braid I've had for years. Just sharing a passion !

At least with a book, Susanna Salk can’t butt in and rudely interrupt every person she talks to.

The funny thing is that she mentions this in the book- writing, "I get so excited about the topic I just jump in".
