I have better shakuhachis by now but the Bell has been my first ''good'' shakuhachi and It brought me to a better understand of the reactions of a good flute. I still play it on a daily basis. Great video as always ;)

Great review. I would love to hear your thoughts on the shakuhachi made by Abedabun Flutes on Etsy. They look great in photos for the price, but of course the sound is what matters, so I'd be curious to hear your take.

I've had the Bell for a couple months now, I absolutely love it. It has such a warm, mellow tone, and it dips down into Meri so easily. I've never played genuine bamboo, but the Bell can express the sound of honkyoku well in my novice opinion. Also, Jon is discontinuing Bell production very soon, so if you're reading this and want one you better hurry. 😀 I imagine they are going to be hard to find second hand.

@@TairyuShakuhachi Here's the link: www.ellisflutes.com/world-flutes/shakuhachi. There's an improv piece by Peter Phippen on the page. I have one and would recommend it to those starting out. You should reach out to Peter for an interview.

Rolly Cabrita would you say the Geoffrey Ellis flutes meets your expectations of a jiari flute? I am about to make a purchase as a first time player and looking for a recommendation. Many thanks if you can provide input!
@rollycabrita8129
@rollycabrita8129 4 жыл бұрын
@@sjd229sd Definitely, Geoffrey's shakuhachi flutes are really good quality and affordable flutes for the beginner to intermediate players out there. They produce a big booming and beautiful RO-buki, in tune across both octaves, are very responsive, and have that characteristic jiari sound. They also do Chi-Chi-Ru well and pass Deaver's test of Tozan Kara-Kara (Ha Meri in Kan while striking the first hole. Preferred flute response is for the pitch to go higher). I have both the Bell and an Ellis shakuhachi. The differences are that the Bell has that jinashi softer sound due to the bore surface roughness in comparison to the glassy smooth bore surface of a jiari and a shallower utaguchi than most modern shakuhachis. Also, the Bell's fingering holes are 12.5mm wide compared to Ellis' standard shakuhachi hole size of about 10mm. This difference means that it is a lot easier to do meri and achieve the correct pitch with the Bell shakuhachi. You can't go wrong with either.

Sorry, I couldn't hear your audio properly, except for the Shakuhachi. For a flute they are louder than a human voice. The Shakuhachi was the only thing I could hear clearly. Probably there's something wrong with my speakers. But is making Shakuhachi with a different type of wood affect it's Music in anyway?

I watched the video back on my laptop, it's not very loud balanced audio like a professional recording but it is clear. I recommend listening with headphones. Yes, it will change the quality of sound when you change material

Would be interesting to compare the Bell with the Yuu. I’ve been told the Yuu has thicker walls, is heftier, with a contemporary utaguchi cut, thus it’s better for beginners?

So Bell or Yuu?
@TairyuShakuhachi
@TairyuShakuhachi 3 жыл бұрын
I would say both for different reasons. Bell is lighter, Yuu is heavier, Bell has a softer sound, Yuu is bigger. They are both equally good for beginners. but I would not stick with either for more than a year. You need bamboo in the hands!

Is a mediocre flute, the only thing I like about it was the weight, not too heavy like the yuu. IMHO jinashi made of plastic do not make sense, but it was interesting to try.
@TairyuShakuhachi

I can understand that. But hey it’s meant for beginners and not bad for 300. I’ve seen way more expensive shit bamboo flutes.
@LapoSapo
@LapoSapo 3 жыл бұрын
@@TairyuShakuhachi as a jinashi player I did not like cause is missing a lot of flavour, as a jiari is missing the resonance. Offcourse is a decent flute dor a beginner but there are better option, like the yuu for example. Regarding the price a decent flute of bamboo start from 500...less tham that you are more likely to get a bad instrument
@TairyuShakuhachi
@TairyuShakuhachi 3 жыл бұрын
@@LapoSapo I also prefer the Yuu. I have a few jinashi flutes and good ones are hard to come by. I would say less that 800 you’d be hard pressed to find a good one
