I showcase one of my oldest flutes in my collection which is almost 300 years old. I also talk about the main differences between the flutes and give some sound bites. Enjoy! What piece would you like to hear on the edo shakuhachi?

Interesting comparison. I'd call the Edo flute's tone "personal". It definitely demonstrates the difference between playing for yourself vs. playing for others.

I love the idea of the sound coming from "everywhere". It fits so well with the ephemeral nature of shakuhachi music.

Thank you for this comparing ,so I’d like the modern flute ,easer and it’s sound more windy

yeah, there are lots of different sounding modern flutes as well, so it makes comparisons really impossible but I prefer flutes after 1900

Domo Arigato Gozaimasu! Great coverage of the Wind Wonder of 🇯🇵 Japan. The distinctive timbre or rather directed projection of the Modern shakuhachi is a special addition to the knowledge in the West about the instrument.

Interesting video. Sadly, flutes don't get better like violins the older they get. Because of the constant moisture in the player's breath they slowly lose their tone if you play for example on one flute only for about 14-15 years. That's why professional recorder players often have 3 similar main flutes and when they have to practice very much, they also use plastic recorders sometimes. Man, I wish I could travel back in time, to hear this flute during Edo period. Think it sounded a lot better back then....

Via Google Translate: Some folks really love the rounded-ness of the older shakuhachi. I did a blind listening of 5 flutes. Take a listen to that, would love to know your thoughts.

Very cool! Are there modern replicas of Edo flutes made specifically for performance, as is done with western baroque instruments?

Yes, there are people that work on making closer to that style but I have never tried one and can't judge the quality as I have only played a handful of edo flutes.

Hi and thank you for your videoes they are very entertaining as I am very interested in learning to play the shakuhachi. I have purchased an old refurbished jiari shakuhachi from a japanese antique store for £165. over the past 6 months i've become better at forming the embouchure and sustaining a note without effort however it is still very difficult to go through the holes without having to make significant head adjustments. Also the inside laquer at the utaguchi is slightly cracked i don't know if this affects the sound but i still love it. This whole preamble was for me to basically ask you What is the name of your modern shakuhachi? as i am interested in purchasing one that i can trust is only limited by my ability to play. Thank you :)

Hasan, Thank you so much for your comment! Yes, you can go and purchase one from Yozan Hikichi. Here is the link. www.yozan-hikichi.shop/index.html?tsuka_conv=JPY&lang_id=en He has a variety of sizes and levels of flutes all of which are fantastic. Good luck and keep me posted if you get one.

@@TairyuShakuhachi Hi Renzoh, thank you very much for your prompt reply. I've had a careful look at Yozan Mei and your videos on Facebook and I can truthfully say i am very impressed. I will have to wait for a few months until i am finished with my masters degree but i will most certainly purchase a "beginner" level shakuhachi from Yozan. I have one final question. I have noticed you mention in other videos that the bamboo thickness depends on the breath of the user ? I am 1.73m (5.67 foot) tall and have a very active lifestyle. Which shakuhachi thickness would you recommend ?

8:20 Did you mean 'D' with Eb meant as referring to tsu meri, as your playing on a 1.7? Even though tsu meri honkyoku pitch tends to be a tad flatter as western Eb pitch on a 1.8 modern flute.
