Thanks for what I discovered about 9 yrs. Ago after getting worn out stretching canvas I'm 88 and still happily painting next commission for a dog portrait. With a lace collar and pearls. Sounds like fun. Sooo appreciate your work with values. The portraits are exquisite and love your humor and the way you teach. You deserve your success sincerely. MARNA MCCORMICK

I've just started working on a fine linen for the first time, I always used either panels or cotton canvas before. Linen is a whole other world in my opinion. The ease of blending is phenomenal, edges are crisp with minimal effort. I will take your advice and look at oil primed for my next purchase. I noticed that my oils are drying matt quite a lot of the time, though some pigments still seem to dry glossy. Thank you for these videos, very very useful! I'm the same age as you, graduated in 2002 from a fine art course, but I stopped painting in 2005 and restarted last year. Your videos are teaching me more than I was taught on my degree.

This tip has changed the game for me.I had always painted on canvas. And could never get my paintings to blend well.I always assumed it was the paint or the painter.Just doing this one thing makes such a difference.Thank you for sharing.

Hi Scott, I love your amazing art and sunny disposition… as well as I love your painting setup! Having the palette just on top of the canvas seems so convenient and comfortable… you should do a video to illustrate the gear and the setup for this arrangement. Thank you for your work!

I use Centurion fine weave linen panels with lead primer. Or Claessens medium weave. But I LOVE the weave of centurion. Very affordable, I will make a $200 roll on it last 2 or 3 years. The lead priming from Rublev is my fave cuz its not quite as slick as oil primed but doesn't matte/dry out like gesso. And it's durable as heck. $400 set me up with custom panels for like 4 years. Granted I FINISH like TWO detailed paintings a month(have fulltime welding job, and am single flltime dad) but still, prolly save $200-300 a year, plus I just love the process and the had made look. I have ordered them but the way I make them it would be pretty expensive($25-$80 a panel) so I actually save wayyy more than $300 technically. Anyway great vid. I also recommend centurion

I use these also but I use the one mounted to boards/panels. These are great and affordable. I've used gesso boards, and paper both do not seem to take oil as well as oil primed surfaces. I highly recommend this brand also.

I've been using Jerry's Artarama for over 30 years now and have always had great service and short delivery times and I only use the $3.00 shipping upgrade over the free delivery when buying $50 or more from them. Maybe because I am closer (Texas) but I usually get my supplies with 5-6 work days and this is buying straight from Jerry's. I used to stretch my own linens too, but age and arthritis as well the time used when I could be painting. I shopped around for stretched linen and found Centurion at Jerry's. I first tried the oil primed linen panels and have used those for 18x24 and smaller. I use stretched linen for all the larger pieces. I really do like working with it. I am planning on using the stretched canvas's for anything over 16x20 though. Really good review. Thanks.

Jerry’s has free shipping on order’s over fifty dollars, I get the two dollar FedEx anyway and I get my package in about a week. I don’t pay tax with them which is a big plus. Anyway I paint in a similar style to yours and just got a Raymar panel 20 by 24 with Artfix L84C on it, it is the finest linen you can buy, quadruple oil primed. It’s the best surface I’ve ever painted on and the quality of Raymar is second to none. I used to stretch my own canvas to, now I’ll only use panels because I don’t have to worry about sagging. I highly recommend Raymar panels, they are owned by to sisters and they mount all kinds of canvas and watercolor paper. Great video , thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience

I can't help but think that the artist who didn't like your recommendation probably wasn't as good as you are ! You are the best. We are happy to get any tips or recommendations that you have. Your work is so excellent. And yes, Lustenhauwer simply says that his canvas "sucks too much paint." Took me awhile to figure out what he meant.

Thank you for the review, it was very informative! I'm just starting with oil paint and it was helpful (like all your videos!). I am struggling right now to find the right support for my paintings. I am very frustrated with cotton surfaces because it is so rough and wood panels are a little too sleek. I am also experimenting with different type of primers because indeed, acrylic gessos are so absorbent. I am currently using Michael Harding non absorbent acrylic primer, which is nicer but still, I can't seem to find the ideal mix yet. Next try is with oil ground primer and even Golden Gac 100 and PVA. I'll see how it goes. I'm going to try your recommendation, because the way your brush strokes glide onto your canvas is sooo satisfying! I can't wait to see your next reviews, especially on wood panels and how you prep them. I would like to see a varnish review, differences between different type of finishes.

Thanks for the review, Scott. I like working with linen canvas over cotton. It's helpful to know your reasons for oil primed canvas versus gesso.

You may want to add large headed carpet tacks to the edges for longevity . I also use an oil primed stretched linen canvases but purchase from United Kingdom companys Bird and Davis or Atlantis both give excellent bespoke service options .

Looks great! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, plain mortals. Unfortunately, I can not find this brand here in Japan or other similar oil based gesso. Will have to do with regular acrylic gesso for now.

I agree it’s a great surface it’s a perfect balance of texture. It gives forgiveness but the one problem I do have with it is the oil priming is very thin and so I always put an additional oil coat and that solves the problem one question I do have is I use the panels and I don’t know what the foundation or the board is made of do you happen to know that?

Thanks for the video. I'm in Canada, so no Artarama and minimal choice thru Amazon for Centurion. The oil prime is much more expensive than acrylic primed. That said, I get the acrylic primed panels and apply oil primer (ground) on the boards. More trouble but lower cost. You have much more experience than me. Thoughts?

Thank you so much for this review! Do you have any experience with "boutique" oil primed panels like Raymar? I have been using their "L84C" line and it is the smoothiest linen in their lineup. I thought I loved them...until i heard you mentioning you disliking a surface that is too smooth and this canvas was the "goldilocks" balance point for surface for your style of painting. I do paint in similar style as you (at least I try 😆), and it seems like with this panel, it's extremely difficult to "hide" my brush strokes. Do you think using slightly rougher surface will help me in this regard? Thanks as always for your brilliantl contents!

The oil primer on Centurion linen canvas contains zinc oxide, if you really care about your paintings then you'd probably avoid painting on them for the paintings to last. I wish you could talk about that.

P.s. only blick carries Raymar, though you can order directly from Raymar , their panels are pricy for some, myself included.. I think their worth their weight in gold

Not happy with Jerries. Order some Old Holland paint from them and returned them unopened because I didn’t like there content. Jerries only refunded 1/2 the cost and I paid the return shipping too!
