Great video Dan thank you. You have to try and I highly recommend the Honda hrx217. It has the 190cc motor, twin blade technology. You can do full mulch, full bag or half mulch half bag with its adjustable selector. For $600 I highly recommend this to everyone. Thanks again. Hi Dan. A quick question.. Can I tilt any mower the way you did here? I have a Honda HRX 537 and a commercial KAAZ with a Kawasaki 180 cc engine on it. I know I have to shut down the fuel but what about the oil? Won't oil flood the engine? Your answer would be much appreciated..

+CountrysideLawnNY I thought about that and would choose this 21 S series due to its size, makes it easier to store, transport and operate. They have same size bags so no advantage to have the 30. Remember. I did not like the 30 as a mulching mower either. Also the 30 has belts and spindles to maintain where as this 21 is pretty basic.

The Garlic Farm Toro also owns Lawnboy and a long time ago (in the 1990's I think) they bought Wheelhorse garden tractors! I have 4 old the old 1970's Wheelhorse garden tractors, I bought a 2003 Lawnboy with (Personal Pace self propelled) a Silver Series 6.5 HP 2 cycle (143 cc's) used back in 2014 or so for $110.00 with the bagger, mulching blocker, and it's 22 inch aluminum deck is made for side discharge from the factory. What a beast! Before that, in 2010 I bought a Toro brand new that was front wheel drive 22 inch steel deck, 3 in 1 also with the Briggs & Stratton 190 cc 6.75 lb-ft that is a beast too. I love them both, but they both clog up with wet grass here in Illinois. Tall and fine fescue is what I am mowing.

I built mine I spent $145 on a hyper tough push mower my brother-in-law bought a Poulan Pro for the five and a half horse Briggs and Stratton within two years the motor wasn't any good at locked up I only had mine a year I hated it with a passion and I built my dream lawn mower out of two bagger mulcher discharger and I got an awesome machine out of it

the manual on that exmark shows 2 differant blade attaching shafts , 1 takes the 2 outer holes to bolt on blade and the other is your setup.

I have two problems from day 1: 1 My mower gets clogged even with dried grasses and won’t shoot out the side nor does it feed through the mulch bag. 2 Also it looks like it mows better mowing backwards then mowing forward. Is my blade possibly placed on backwards?

I would recommend a Toro Super Recycler. $549. Good power and transmission. I also have the Toro Turfmaster. I know it'd be over-kill for you but I really like it. I definitely think this mower would benefit from a mulching blade. Cool comparison

I have this mower for commercial use residentail use and i payed $1.000 for this mower Now about grass clippings being left behind after mowing it. ALL mowers do that no matter what . IF the grass is tall like in this video sure there will be clumps i mulch instead of bagging. I have been doing lawn service for 25 + yrs. As for the front wheel adjustment i leave it at 2.5 inches same as the back. No it is not low at all and when i use my weed eater to edge it looks perfect and high i can not complain about this exmark mower . So what if the mower is heavy cuz it has a steel deck and has a half gallon fuel tank. I have had Honda mowers as well they where good. But this Exmark is a better mower all around

For mulching the best 21" mower I have ever used (so far) has been the Honda HRX with the plastic deck. Wet, tall, thick, or even all the above the Honda can mulch it without missing stuff or leaving clippings on the lawn. They don't hold up like a commercial 21 but definitely out cut them. Still a hefty price tag of $730 but that's the price you pay for performance I guess.

I have an old craftsman mower with the same setup on how the blade attaches (I believe there was a piece of rubber between the blade and the blade holder)! It may lesson some damage the engine's crankshaft bearing if you hit something while mowing!

Great video. On a side note, I noticed you taking the blades off with a socket wrench. I used to do the same thing until I was tightening the bolt on my mower blade and the socket slipped off. My hand went flying into the blade and it sliced right through the tendon on my ring finger. Almost one year and a surgery later my ring finger is crooked and has limited mobility. I would have likely cut across all of the fingers on my knuckles if I hadn't had a prior incident with other fingers on my hand rendering them significantly shorter than my ring finger. Lesson learned, I either use a breaker bar or an impact wrench when taking my blades on and off.

Good video but I have to dispute the part about adjusting the cutting height with the front wheels. I have this mower and it takes less than 60 seconds to do the front two wheels and the rear adjustments. In my opinion that’s fast and efficient.

That's a Frankenstein blade setup. I can't imagine Exmark would have that from factory. I'd suggest the owner of that mower take it to a different shop than he bought it from, and just find out what the deal is. No way in hell that's the correct blade setup. Something is wrong.

I have toro super recycler , the ones they sell at home depot are recyclers. It does have aluminum deck but it's almost an inch thick, no weight savings 84 lbs.They start 600$ msrp, I got mine online at mower source 500$ no tax free shipping free blade, it looks like they have same deal right now

Hi Dan, as always a superb honest review. I learn a lot from your videos. I have a 2007 21" Honda HRX 217 (190cc) that I use occasionally when the ground is soft (after extremely heavy rains) as the 42" ZTR is just too heavy for conditions. I got it from the Home Depot after someone returned it. Looks like they mowed what they had to and returned it. It had some scuffs, but at 1/2 price ($350) I can't complain. It starts and runs like a champ and the only things that I have done to it (aside from oil and air filters) is replace the blades and starter pull cord ($15). The dual blades both mulch and bag beautifully. The high heavy plastic deck never clogs, even in heavy wet grass. I suggest you get a Honda next time around. So sorry to see the ZTR go. IMHO, 21" mowers cut OK, but they do not leave the lawn looking like a 'rolling carpet' Stay Well....

Bagging is not the machine's "forte". It's forte is that you spend $1,100 on it once and it will last a lifetime. I have one. It's a tank. I've also gone through 3 Honda homeowner mowers. I love the Hondas but if you're spending $500 a year on one, it's going to add up quick. Honda commercials are about the same price and a little lighter. It's awesome as well!

Dan's Vlog yes sir I agree that the Honda engine will last a while. In a commercial capacity, however, the $600 Honda body will break down much faster. It's a homeowner unit. The Exmark (as well as the $1,100 commercial Honda) is built with the professional in mind. It is simply built to withstand anything you can throw at it. My argument is that In the long run, you will actually be saving much more $ by spending the extra few hundred bucks up front.

Most people I know would never mulch grass that tall, let alone with a single blade mower, it doesn't have enough tip speed. Most mowers are designed to cut about 1/3 of the total length of the grass. It is also unhealthy to cut that much off the grass all at once. Your assessment is not objective since you are not using the mower in accordance with best practices or manufacturer's instruction.

I have a Troy-Bilt Bronco riding lawn mower 46-inch cut that's all I do is mulch my leaves up I don't even attempt to bag them you have 3 ft thick leaves it goes less than an inch

I genuinely wish I had made a video like this Two years ago when I bought mine. You are right on the money, it is completely useless mulching but it is an amazing bagger and would be a great discharge machine if the attachment were available. Two years down the line, I've had the deadman cable break three times, the drive belt break twice and I've been completely turned off of Kawasaki's. Quick left spins or fairly rapid back and forth motions cause the engine to starve for fuel and it's already burning oil. I still have my 20 year old Commercial Lawnboy around just in case. When I purchased it, I would have completely agreed with your 3 star rating, after living with it, I genuinely would not recommend this mower.

Exmark has another blade that's more of a gator blade design that bags and mulches really well, it's the one I run on my Exmark commercial 21 x series I prefer it over that blade design, because like you said that one sucks a mulching.

Good afternoon Dan the man. I do believe the adapter on that mower is either broken or the wrong one because it's supposed to have sides to go over the sides of the blade like a toro. Exmark owns toro. that will cradle the blade and then that large metal plate locks it all together .

I dad that mower that blade slack causes the bolt to brake off inside the shaft with no warning I guess if you replace the bolt often as t wouldn't be a problem but I never thought to check the bolt and destroyed the mower over a &1 bolt

I was glad u made it because I plan on buying that machine but how much of a weight difference is it than your Troy bolt or an old Toro super recycler pro line commercial if u ever used one? My Honda commercial mower doesn't bog but doesn't cut all stranglers like this mower does. I feel like it's not the mower but the decks weight and construction. My Honda on thick compact grass will mulch without leaving some stragglers but when cut low like 2.5" and lower it mulches any grass just fine. I thought it would be an issue when the leaves started to fall but no it wasn't and so I just mulch slow with it. I think that would be the same with this exmark mower just because of the weight if that makes any sense. Lol idk. The Honda is heavy though that's why I would like a lighter commercial mower but if the Honda hrx217 gets updated I will most likely pick that up

Ben Kempa yeah I've had my troy built tb230 for the past 7 years and its still going. ive had to buy new front wheels for it because they wear out but other than that it still making me money

Brian G I can't agree with that because when you have to do 30 yards a day these commercial ones are really the only way to go because zero turns will tear up the land and on a small yard the risk does not justify saving a little time just to have way more to trim,but ours were geared super fast and cut good but not perfect but it did it super fast,we ran behind the mowers. With me the most ice spent was 729 new but I almost always buy used because I fix motors and everything so I can get 2 for 800 just about

My 21'' exmark always cut like crap until I put an aftermarket Oregon blade on it. It's the only mulching blade they make for the 21'' exmark.

There is a reason I didn't go out and buy another one. The problem is lack of blade lift. The blade that comes with it is a bagging blade, not a mulching blade. At least that's what the dealer told me. I was blown away when they told me exmark doesn't have a mulching blade. Mine is an older model which is the 3 in 1 mulch, bag and discharge. Tri vantage I think is what it's called.

No blade can do great mulching and great bagging. A bagging blade is going to be designed for high lift and a mulching blade isn't. Btw, I have a Snapper commercial 21 and I regularly switch between a high lift blade for bagging and a ninja blade for mulching. .
